  1. i got tickets to a couple of Habs games in October. does anyone know if taking a camera into the Bell Centre is going to be a problem (film - 35mm SLR with telephoto). managed to get game seats in the Platinum section, so will be in a good spot for photos
  2. with Milbury running that team, i doubt if the islanders would have bought him out, even if they only had to pay him a fraction of that cost?? How the hell does that guy keep his job? which leads me to the next question? Votes for DUMBEST GM in overpaying players? my vote is a tie for the new york gm's - Milbury and Sather.
  3. Now that three of the potentially big UFA"s for 2006 are locked up (Iginla, thornton, Lecavlier). Who's left from the younger crop?? (not including Koivu, Theodore)
  4. yeah UFA - that's what i had actually meant. One question - now that salary's are public knowledge - especially with the new salary cap - and everyone will eventually know what the salary's are anyways, why the hell don't teams release the terms????
  5. TSN is reporting Koivu has been signed - no terms released - 1 yr deal Guess he will be a RFA next year
  6. That is EXACTLY why i think Montreal needs to trade Bonk - at best (in my opion) he is a third line centre. Is talented but doesnt alwasy show up, and in the playoffs he is generally invisible. I really don't like our first or second line centres. To me Koivu would be the ideal second line centre (is as close to a 1A as you can get). he can play the PP and PK. And i'm even more uncomfortable of having Ribiero as the second line centre (skilled, yes, but small frail, and doesn't always show up). I really think the Habs need a TRUE #1 centre who will be a constant threat. It doesn't make sense in paying Koivu $3.5M to $4.5M , Ribeiro $1M to $1.5M and Bonk $2.3M (?). Why not spend the $5-6M on a guy like Lecavalier (trade for him and try to sign him to a longterm $5M-$5.5M-$6M-$6M deal. then try and sign on Koivu at around $3.5M??? I think it will be harder to get Koivu to take $3M-$3.5M when Bonk is making $2.3M. It makes much more sense to spend more on top end talent, and then fill your roster with guys making $750k-$1.5M. That's also why I think the habs need to get rid of Rivet (great leader, gritty player - but should be making around the same money as Dandenault . Isn't Sourey a free agent next year??? if so, it's going to be harder to resign him when Rivet is making $2.8M. Under the old system, you could screw up with one guys salary, and then end up paying other players on your team more when their contracts are due - you can't afford to make those types of mistakes anymore udner the new CBA. That's why i think Gainey made a huge mistake not buying out Bonk and Rivet. Yeah, if he bought out Bonk, it makes the Garon deal a Garon for Huet deal. But the fact is that the Garon deal is done (under the assumption of the old CBA). It's a sunk cost now. You can't hang on to Bonk because it makes the Garon deal looks bad, you have to correct the situation going forward. Bcoz overpaying guys under the new CBA is just going to hurt negoitions with other players. And you are going to see more salary dump deals (like Roneick and Thibault). Sure Clarke should have been able to get more then Futures for Roenick, but dumping Roenick let him get one of the top three players in the game (when healthy). Ordinarily I think Clarke makes dumb deals (except the Rechhi-Leclair/Desjardins) deal, but i think he made a great move, given the new CBA. And thats what the habs need to do now.
  7. bcoz next year he will most likely be offered more money - I think offering a longer term deal now might be a little cheaper then next year when you have teams that are really going to suck this year (i.e. Leafs, Rangers) that are going to be in the market for next year's crop of UFA. Next year may also be harder bcoz there may be other guys like Thornton in the market who get signed on for the max which is going to drive the market up for other UFA's (kind of like the UFA market for defensemen this year). Don't know until you pursue it. I could be wrong here - not an expert on the CBA, bought i though that temas would get another buyout option after the arbitration period (or it may only apply for teams that have players going to arbitration). I think Bonk was a big mistake - that is only going to be compounded with the salary cap imposed by the new CBA - if there is an oppertunity to correct the mistake rather then overpaying Bonk for two more years - i'd do it. This looks like a Andre Savard move to me, more then Gainey. But regardless, under the new CBA - you can't be paying a third line center over $2M - expecially when you don't have a true 1st line centre (I love koivu, i remember back when he was actually leading forsburg in scoring before his first big injury, but he really is a #2 centre, or a 1B at best). As far as Witt goes, his style suits playoff hockey, and montreal needs guys who can clear the front of the net. As much as i like Rivet, he is a clutch and glab Dman, not physical enough to clear the net without grabbing guys.. about the spelling - guilty as charged:D [Edited on 2005/8/9 by habForever]
  8. Trade for Brendan Witt - can you see Kimosorik, Sourey and Witt on the D?? WIll be needed to get by Philly!! They already let Mike Ratje go to Philly - do NOT let Witt get away!! If Rivet was bought out, could have signed Ratjhe. Make the Luongo trade - he is younger, cheaper and i think a better goalie then Theodore (many have pointed out Garon's bad playoffs last year in the AHL - what about Theodore in 2004 - very inconsistant). If it means giving up Ryder so be it - we have two other scoring wingers in Kovolev and Zednik, and now that have some young guys that are SUPPOSED to be ready - I'd like to see what they can do. Montreal is notorious for not giving their young guys a chance and then watching them develop elsewhere, or babying their prospects for too long, or not bringing guys in until they learn to play defense first. Try VERY HARD to to get Vinny Lecavalier in a package that would unload mikey ribs - if Kubina can be had by including Price in a deal - MAKE THE DEAL!!! The way he manhandled Sourey to score a pivotal goal in the 2004 playoffs was his coming out. he is ready to be the next big habs - only thing we'd have to do is replace his #4. we have not had this kind of talent since the flower. If there still is an option to buyout contracts after the arbitration process is completed, correct past mistakes by buying out Rivet (love the guy - but is making too much money - at least $750k to $1M overpaid), buyout Bonk (too much money for a third liner - who not only will make negotiations with Koivu tough, but this guy has never shown up in the playoffs). Moving these two would allow montreal to pick up a D man like Witt and another scoring winger in the mix until the kids prove themselves. [Edited on 2005/8/9 by habForever]
  9. yeah but Bossy created scoring oppertunities for himself as well and was a constant threat whenever he was on the ice. Dageneis is not a regular threat when he is on the ice, nor is he able to CREATE oppertunities.
  10. Any thoughts on any of the Habs RFA going to arbitration? If any of the Habs do goto arbitration, do the Habs have the option of buying anyone out again? I seem to remember that there were two buyout windows teams had
  11. i LOVE the signings the leafs have made so far - replacing the aging heros of their last few playoffs (roberts and Niewandyk) with aging injured guys. And then making a big deal about resigning Domi??? well enough said:D I can't WAIT to see the leaf fans with bags over their head, circa mid-80's:D
  12. I'd make the Theo and Ryder for Lugano in a heartbeat!! Next step would be flipping Price for lecavalier in another package.
  13. I agree with you about the Garon trade. I was really pissed when they made that trade, coz I see him becoming a better or as good of a goaltender as Theo (have argued with my brother with this one to know end). i think Montreal made a terrible trade, bcoz Theo was simply getting to expensive and I wasn't overly impressed with his last playoff run. Garon was a much more prized prospect, and goalies and defenseman tend to take a lot longer to develop then forwards (see Gigeaure or Souray). This is one reason as much as I think Hainsey would be great trade bait with Tampa, I'm leery of him coming back and haunting the habs by becoming the stud D that he was supposed to be. I am also a bit leery of expectations on Price, coz goalie prospects and particularly WHL goalie prospects tend to be a bit of a crap shoot (remember that Trevor Kidd was taken ahead of both Broduer and Potvin) and Dipitro really hasn't done much yet. The only high pick goalie prospect that provided almost immediate dividends was barrasso. I don't think Montreal needed a third line centre - certainly not a $3.5M one. they need a true number one centre (love Koivu - lots of heart and leadership - but is really a number 2 or a 1B). After seeing Lecvalier man handle montreal during the playoff, I really think Montreal needs to make a Lecavalier deal now. I see him having a really monster year, which is just going to make him more expensive next year. I'd be esthatic if monteal could make a Price, Ribeiro, Dagenies/Hainsey deal for Lecavalier and Kubina. although i wouldn't be willing to give up Koivu for a guy who will be a free agent next year. While I think that Gainey is probably the Montreal GM i'm most comfortable with since Sam Pollack (don't even get me started about Savard:mad:, I think Gainey has made a number of bad moves and tends to overpay players. he really overpaid Audette back when he was with the stars (considering he was injury prone, incosistant and over-rated), as well as with the habs. He paid too much for Bonk who was expected to be a third liner as well as Rivet - who is a great team guy and plays with a lot of heart - but not worth the money he was signed to. I really think montreal should have bought out Rivet and BOnk and cleared more salary room for a true Number one centre and defenseman. They would have saved around $5, which would have come in handy to sign a #1 centre like Forsburg, or come in handy down the line for Lecavalier. I'd also make the Theo and Ryder for Lugano deal in a heartbeat. i think Lugano is a not only a better goalie then Theo, but still has even more upside while also being three years away from UFA status. Moreover, clearing the team of Ryder, Ribeiro and Dagenieus would make room for some prospects to show if they belong. Can you imagine if Gainey was able to make the Lecavlier and Lugano deals, montreal having a core up front that would include Lecavlier, Koivu, Kovalev, Zednick, Bonk Bulis complemented by kids like Higgens and Pelanak, Hossa (if they pan out)? and Souray, Kubina, Markov, kimosarak, Rivet on the D and Lugano in net?? AND be under the cap The key to Montreal being a true force again is having that Dominant #1 at centre and making you have a stud goalie for years to come [Edited on 2005/8/6 by habForever]
  14. personally i think that gainey should have bought out Craig Rivet AND Radek Bonk. At best Rivet is a 5th/6th defencemen - although a great team player/leader who plays with a lot of heart and obviously likes playing in Montreal. Bonk is making way too much more money for a 3rd line centre. Getting rid of them would have cleared up around $5M of salary which could have been used to lure a true number one centre OR a #1 defenseman that montreal so badly needs (Sourey has had one good year, but I would not call him a #1 defenseman yet)
