  1. Well, I don't think the 'French coach' policy in and of itself warrants THAT level of pessimism. While there are only a couple of Great coaches out there - Byslma (sp?), Lemaire, maybe Trotts - there are plenty of 'good' coaches, and some of them are bilingual. Jacques Martin and Marc Crawford are two examples. So while the affirmative action policy prevents us from signing the superstar coach, it does not prevent us from being a well-coached team, and well-coached teams can win the Cup.

There is definitely a wider issue with psychodrama in Montreal, though. And I believe this contributes to transforming slumps into total season-ending meltdowns (2009, possibly this year). If Molson is receptive to the psychosis, we are doomed.

It goes deeper. Some people want an all Quebecois lineup. Call it pessimism, but it's tough to take.
  2. Went to breakfast this morning, and read that fish wrap, the Journal de Montreal. It's embarrassing. I'm born and raised here, with any luck, I've got another 40 years until I take my final dirt nap here. I don't like what this has become. The media has too much power. It's as if the Molsons have no say. I noticed it when Kirk Muller was hired in Carolina. Nice words for him, but not a single hint that he'd be considered for the job here. And today, everywhere I look, the list of replacements is nothing but francophone Quebecois. I read people suggesting an all Quebecois staff. Cunneyworth has no chance in hell. In a way, I feel sorry for him. He get's the job of coaching the worlds most famous hockey team. But no matter how well he does, he'll be replaced in April. At least I can say I was at two Stanley Cup parades. Because you just get the feeling we have no chance anymore. Not if this hockey team isn't an actual hockey team. But some sort of beacon for French hope.

  3. Read Hickey's article on the firing. I completely support his theiry and believe ot 100%. This melt down is more Gauthier and Gainey's doing than Martin's. The team is average. That's it. Martin helped them become slightly. Etter than average.

Mark my words. Price will be thrown under the bus this season. This defense is not good enough to play an agressive forecheck game. Our little forwards will get boxed out and the D will be exposed. Price will face more high quality scoring chances and an average amount of them will go in. Fans and media will jump on his back.

That is scary what you're suggesting. But is Cunneyworth all that much different in style and approach? I thought I read somewhere that our shots against totals were low. If he opens it up slightly, whatever that means, hopefully we'll be ok.
  4. Ok, Commandant, I'll apologize as well. Maybe it was a dig. Directing me to an ignore feature didn't come across as someone who's interested in debate. For the record, I'm not jumping up and down at the firing. My reaction was, wow, Gauthier did it. One other thing. Imagine if Cunneyworth does well. But still get's replaced because of language. We'd be laughed at by the planet.

  5. Thanks all the better then. I really like the job he's done with St. Johns.

And I'll debate opinions all day....

And there is a difference between attacking an opinion and attacking a person. You are very close to crossing that line.

I have no problem with being close to any line. The idea that the fan base is all nuts, and that this is going go happen again is like saying the ski is blue. That's the nature of these websites. It's also why the cliche coaches are hired to be fired exists.
  6. I don't disagree with that.

Doesn't change the fact that we fire coaches before or during their third season as if on queue. I bet no matter who we hire, vet or rookie we'll be having this same thread in less than 3 years.

Honestly, who cares? That's the point of these silly websites. You seem to be banging away on several of them.
  7. If I were Gauthier I would not want a highly qualified francophone with GMing experience sitting next to me. It would make me too easily replaced once the next losing streak comes around. This is especially so, if indeed this coaching move was imposed by ownership - which means we have an interfering and panicky owner.

To me, the best news about this is the rumour of further personnel moves. We need to fix the hole at C and I like any rumour suggesting a proactive management on this front.

If we had an interfering and panicky owner, he would have been fired when Pearn was. The fact that Molson allowed a unilingual replacement suggests that the ownership might be thinking more about actually winning. To me, this is more about what the high priced vets are not doing. It could be as simple as a conversation between Cammalleri and Gauthier at an airport. It's all about a new approach, and new voice. Standard procedure in pro sports actually.
  8. Team 990 is great!!!! they call it like they see it!!! LL gets 50 seconds of ice time for scoring. he should have shot it into the corner and stood at the blue line he would have got more ice time.

You're right. Dumping it into the corner is more in line with Martin's system of eking out 1 goal victories, while relying on all-world goaltending. I've never called for Martin to be fired, but as each day goes by, I'm with Colin on his assessment. Ask these Martin defenders how they think it'll play out. If Martin is such a genius, does he get a contract extension?
  9. Does anyone listen to the team 990?

Ya, I listen, mostly in the car. When Mitch Melnyk interviews Stephen Brunt it's usually great radio. And although I find Pierre McGuire to be annoying, it's usually informative. Commandant, you're way off base about Melnyk and Martin. No surprise, because all you do is defend his every move. Try thinking outside the box, and sometimes, less is more...

  10. It's funny how Gorges get's mixed in with Kaberle. I love what Josh brings to the team, but, if you think Kaberle has a hefty contract, imagine paying Josh more than 2.5 million per year. If a somebody offers him 4 million this summer, goodbye, don't let the door hit you in the ass.
