His job is to find a solution, he's had 6 off-seasons and drafts to do it.

1.) In four of his 5 seasons at the helm, we entered the year with our centre depth being Desharnais, Plekanec, Eller.
No change, just kept rolling out those three for 4 straight years.

In the fifth year we started with Galchenyuk, Plekanec, Desharnais, and finished with Danault, Plekenac, Shaw.

2.) We were supposed to build through the draft.  Top 6 centres come overwhelmingly from the top two rounds. In the top 2 rounds, he's drafted.... Alex Galchenyuk, and then allowed his coaches to use him on the wing constantly and not develop him as a center. Michael McCarron who was a RW both seasons with the US NTDP, was a RW to start his first year in London, and who then Dale Hunter moved to Centre. Even then he never had the offensive potential to be a top 6 guy, something i said from day one of him being drafted. Jacob de la Rose is another player who was best suited as a third/fourth line centre. Ryan Poehling and Joni Ikonen were drafted this year, so maybe one of those is a top 6 centre.

To recap... a guy who was supposed to build through the draft, drafted 1 offensive centre, and 1 defensive centre, and 1 guy who converted from wing to centre in the top 2 rounds of his first five drafts.  1 Legit Offense producing prospect at centre.

3.) Traded in those years.... Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza, Brayden Schenn, Martin Hanzal, Ryan Johansen, Mika Zibanejad, Artem Anisimov, Derick Brassard, Derek Stepan, Eric Staal, Ryan O'Reilly, Ryan Kesler.  Other guys are moving by free agency.  Movement happens.

4.) Didn't even make an offer to Vadim Shipachyov.  The guys agent called the Habs to see if they were interested, we didn't make an offer.

I'm tired of excuses as to why in 6 years he can't get it done.  Other GMs get centres.  There is no reason why Montreal can't.

because it is so hard. He has 4th liners and washed up former "good" players to sign. You think Hemsky just falls in your lap? no you have to work to get him. It is just so damned hard. This post may have some sarcasm in it.

The asking price for Duchene was apparently Galchenyuk, Sergachev, and a first rounder.  What would that make the price for MacKinnon, a player who has a lot more value?  That'd be what, Galchenyuk, Drouin, Pacioretty, and a 1st rounder or two?  (Don't get me wrong, that's an extreme overpayment but if the price on Duchene (someone deemed to be available) was that high, that's going to be the asking price for MacKinnon (someone who they've called untouchable).)

That is just nuts. Sakic took one too many to the noggin. I think they should have kept Patrick and made Sakic the stick boy.

Again, you come up with odd suggestion. But OK, wonder why is Bergevin is only trying to be 'good enough' and not interested in winning a cup? Maybe he is scared to make a big trade...nooo that's not it; maybe he just dosent care if wins a cup...quite unlikely; maybe you can explain why Bergy not big on winning a cup and is only trying to be 'good enough'?

It is not that he doesn't want to win a cup, maybe it is too hard. This is a guy who said he would not mortgage the future and would build through the draft. That plan seems to be forgotten about. We have very few prospects and those we do have he trades cause they aren't good enough. Developing prospects is not this team's  forte'. Maybe he should work on that. Get an AHL coach with 1/2 a clue. Find some guys who can help the youngsters develop. Basic hockey 101.

Wow, that almost seems like satire it's so over the top habs hahah.

Really hope to see him back for a year, or two at a little cheaper. I know his agent is obviously going to pump his tires, but he said Markov is a workhorse who wants to play for 3-5 more years.

Ans honestly, it's the cerebral side of Markov's game that's keeping him going. Like a Nik Lidstrom lite, I could see it happening.

Markov represents himself. berezin is his advisor/trainer/water bottle carrier.

What lesson should Bergy have learned?

You have seen Julien coach for long time now, you really don't think he will toss out his playbook and start coaching totally different now do you?

Seems 30 teams played hard ball with Radulov and haven't heard one person compliment Dallas on the signing, 100% to the opposite.

Am getting curious what Bergy will do with cap room, especially if Markov signs elsewhere?

sign some 4th liners a a couple of 35+ defencemen?

Stephane Da Costa, the player referenced in that French report.

"While he likely wouldn’t make the same impact in the NHL that he does in Russia, Da Costa could represent a secondary scoring option for a team that is a bit lacking on offense. He’ll have to really want to come back to the NHL—which Dreger says he does—because he’ll likely command more money to remain in the KHL."

    could be expensive?

    Just a bad joke :)

It was mentioned that Gallagher is our spark plug and for one reason or another Steve Begin came to my mind as someone who did that job quite well for us. The league's changing though and I'm not sure if he'd get as much of a look anymore.

    ^_^

I am open to doing any type of free league just for the fun of it. Makes the season more interesting. But I like to do leagues with a lot of teams so you do t get teams that are too stacked.

Yeah i will be in the SK league but another league can't hurt. I would join.

Now that I've read the article, I've re-read what you wrote. I don't know why Jagr even hired his agent Petr Svoboda if he's the one making personal calls to GMs.

I can see there being some truth to it but the truth is most likely being twisted.

    very good point

I got a lot of ribbing from non-Habs fans the day after that draft, all based on Mcguire's comments. 'How could the Habs pass on Brule?!?' 'What were they doing?!?'

Ever since then, I pay only casual attention to chatter around the draft. Everyone speaks with such authority, and yet it remains a bunch of informed guesses, no more.

Brule 299 games 95 points. pretty impressive for a high 1st rounder. Out of the Nhl, not to return.

Now everyone should understand why I am so glad Mcguire has dick all to do with this team.

If the money works, why not? The team needs offence and I doubt Hemsky can be relied upon to provide it. But obviously our big priority should be Markov.

Hell even Jagr had 46 points last year. He has missed very few games in the last 4 years that I looked at. Hemsky has played very few games. So we need another guy.

He took a pay cut at the NHL level (by $225K) to get a $45K raise in the minors (from $70-$115K).

Good deal, can't see him making it to the big kindergarden class this year. Maybe next.
