  1. That's too bad. Surprising, too, as I heard recently that he was touring with Gilmour. He played a big role in the Floyd's sound, especially in the early days Those big organ chords, like on Us and Them, were a trademark part of the music. It seems fitting (if corny) to say that he'll now join The Great Gig in the Sky (a song he wrote).

  2. I still don't think this means the end of Sundin. Mainly because what other team in the NHL has a better chance? We are still one of his most likely destinations by default. By midseason, an injury or two might happen and we might find ourselves in need again.

If he decides to come back at all, we'll have to be considered one of his most likely choices. The only other options are the Rangers and the Canucks and I see the charm of the Canucks wearing off by midseason.

I don't understand how we are most likely to get Sundin 'by default'. The longer he waits to decide, more teams will become options because the cap hit will be less.

  3. I don't think this means the end of Sundin, as I believe he'll sign here in middle of the season.

It's over, man, just let it go. We're here for you.

Quoted from a poster on hf.

I like. Montreal is going to use Plekanec and Koivu against top lines, not Lang. Lang is really the "second-line" centre. Koivu is more the third-line centre, but he is the Rod Brind-Amour type third-line centre -- he's not out there just to check.

Like I usually do, I went on behindthenet.ca to view his even-strength performance. Like Tanguay, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Lang has a fairly neutral quality of competition metric -- he was a second-line centre, basically -- but he does have a very positive Corsi number, indicating that while he was facing second lines, he did very well against them in terms of shots for/against. He was also productive. 0.77 goals/60 mins would put him a bit below Chris Higgins, but his 2.13 PTS/60 at ES would put him third on the Habs. He had 14 even-strength goals and 37 even-strength points, both of which would put him near the top of the habs roster, and was a +9 . And all those stats were accrued in the "more defensive" West. He even has good faceoff stats.

He didn't do so well on the power play. But the Habs either don't care, or can fix that.

He is a strong even-strength performer, like Tanguay (but not to the same degree), and he has size. He fills a need nicely. He is no Mats Sundin, of this there can be no doubt. But he is an extremely credible plan B.

    Good info - thanks.

  4. Yet somehow the media turned it into Roy quitting on his team. Roy was saying him or me, and foolishly Corey chose the two guys

with ZERO experience, not the two time Stanley Cup/Conn Smythe/Vezina winner. We are talking REGGIE HOULE and MARIO TREMBLAY.

It is not like it was Guy Lafleur and Larry Robinson. Or Bowman and Pollock.

You can't be surprised that Corey chose Tremblay after Roy said he had played his last game with the Canadiens. That part was common sense. Doing otherwise would have undermined the coach (and any coach that followed). It would also have been a major embarrassment for Corey, as he had only just hired them.

The decision to hire them in the first place was the real mistake, of course, but we shouldn't ignore Corey's ongoing role in their failure. In some situations, Houle was shedding salary or making moves for the sake of the image of the team (rather than the on-ice product), and many people feel these philosophies were influenced by Corey.

And, I love Guy Lafleur the player, but having heard what he's had to say on various topics, I'm not sure he would have done any better as GM.

  5. héhé you're right. But I don't get why people still place the economic issue above the environment. Yes you will save 1000$ a year with a 1% tax cut, but damn, take that 1% from everybody and put it in a freaking green plan ! Let's at least TRY to save the world...

I agree. There's a lot of mud slinging about the green plan, but I think most people don't understand it yet. I include myself in that, which is something I'll try to rectify before casting my vote!

However, in principle, I agree with the concept that there has to be economic incentives for environmentally sound choices (which also take the form of disincentives for poor environmental choices). There will be no progress without it. So, I appreciate that Dion has put a policy out, to be reviewed and debated. As you indicate, Harper has only criticized, but has no particular policy of his own (presumably, it's status quo).

We must make sure, however, that the effect of Dion's plan (or any other plan) does not result in Canada being disadvantaged in terms of competing with the rest of the world, and this is my biggest concern. Canada, as a mid-sized economy, shouldn't necessarily 'show the world the way' by shooting itself in the foot economically while others prosper. That's why my first inclination is that Dion's plan, while perhaps a praiseworthy initiative, might be tackling an issue better dealt with at the international level, where all the major economies and major polluters can agree to a somewhat fair framework. I realize this might be a pipe dream, but real environmental progress will not happen without a world plan with accompanying economic enforcement methods.

  6. now, see, I didn't know about Gilmour. That's cool.

There's a photograph from the '70s of him performing in a Habs jersey. I think it was a sop to the punters (as a Brit might say), as he is more of a soccer fan (Arsenal, specifically) than anything.

  7. cant wait for this...Any guesses on the games?

Definitely illegal stick, too many men, new years eve

maybe the miracle comeback of last season?

Ive been hoping for a nice Habs DVD set for a while

It will depend on how the online voting went, but there were 15 candidates. Link

If the Habs make a habit of releasing these kinds of DVDs, it could bankrupt me. As it is, this one will make an ideal Christmas present.

  8. I'm looking to get an electronic drum set and I have absolutely no idea what I should be looking for.

Right now I am leaning toward the Alesis DM5 Pro. Does anybody know anything about this set or drums in general?

I do some drumming, but haven't used an electronic set before. I looked it up, and it seems to contain all the essential pieces that every basic set should have... other than, the website said kick pedal not included, but the bass drum is, which is mystifying. I'm not sure why the pedal would be sold separately.

  9. There was this little thing he kept repeating during the last election campaign, about more openness and accountability in a Conservative government. Then once he wins a minority government, he shuts large segments of the media out of press conferences, puts gags on many members of his cabinet, and resorts to lawsuits to try and control any form of criticism. He passes a law fixing election dates every four years, then repeatedly suggests an election is possible by holding endless numbers of confidence votes, which he's never lost, all the while claiming that his government can't govern. And for the first 30 months of his term, his first response to any question usually began, "The previous Liberal governments…" If anything, minority governments should be more open and accountable to the electorate, and yet he's done the exact opposite.

You forgot one: pre-election pandering. The recent announcement of a direct subsidy to a Ford plant in Windsor is in direct contrast to their previous policy (which I happened to agree with) as described by Finance Minister Flaherty in January:

Mr. Flaherty criticized the Ontario government's reported willingness to provide $30-million to help reopen the engine plant, saying Premier Dalton McGuinty should lower business taxes first.

"What Dalton McGuinty is doing is the short-term, ad-hoc, subsidy thinking ... the kind of old-fashioned thinking that's proven to be a failure of short-term, Band-Aid fixes for specific companies," he said.

"Quite frankly, politicians aren't very good at picking business winners and losers."

    Link

Imagine a political party that stuck to its principles regardless of whether an election was coming or not. Unfortunately, regardless of who's in power, I don't think we'll ever see it.

  10. http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?articleid=38106...mp;service=page

I officially have zero interest in Mats Sundin. He has come right out and said that he will not decide before the season starts. I have no interest in a player who will not commit to an entire season and will lose much of my respect for him if he goes through with it. Roger Clemens syndrome is becoming far too regular and it needs to stop.

Agreed. It's particularly ridiculous if Sundin decides to return to the NHL after the season starts, because he's the guy who didn't want to be dealt at the deadline because he wanted to be there from the beginning. Either retirement, or sabotaging the Leafs' chances at Tavares are looking like the best options. The Habs have waited long enough - and it's really not fair to a guy like Chipchura, who will hopefully be with our organization for years to come. Cut bait, go with Plan B, so everyone knows their role, and move forward.

  11. For what it's worth, Larry Brooks of the NY Post said on the Fan 590 today that, according to his source, the Rangers haven't heard from Sundin for a couple of weeks, either. This is the same reporter who reported Sundin wanted to be a Ranger a few weeks ago.

Tune in again tomorrow to find out who Sundin hasn't been talking to.

  12. Toronto should be prison...or taxes !!

My son has NHL Monopoly, and the Habs=Park Place, the Leafs=Boardwalk. In my family, the Habs tend to get bought up quickly, while the everyone seems to pass on buying the Leafs, for some reason...

  13. All games will include at least 1 canadian team and all will be avaible in HD.

    Full List

Nice. There's more balance to that schedule compared to last year. If I recall correctly, there were very few games (if any) after Feb. because TSN was preoccupied with curling. :puke:

  14. Expecting Price to play at an All-Star level as a 20 year old has been accomplished ONCE in the last 40 years. So you having that expectation makes

no sense to me. Comparing him to players that history indicates he was NEVER going to match also makes no sense to me.

I expected a good season, and I got one that was somewhat better than I expected. I didn't expect him to be an All-Star or to be as good as the greatest goalies in hockey, and he wasn't. He met or slightly exceeded my expectations.

Nobody is dissing Price here. Your arguments are all about the fact that he's 20. Clearly that's important to you. It's not to me. Gainey decided that he is an NHL-calibre goalie, so Price will be treated like a big boy and have his performance critically evaluated as such.

  15. Don't care about his age? That is the whole point. He is way ahead of the curve and so far ahead that you are comparing him to guys 5-15 years older than him.

Instead of being in awe of a performance that few in NHL history have under their belt some want to look for negatives. Bringing up Steve Penney? Come on, a 24 year old who achieved very little before

or after his miracle run has absolutely nothing in common with Carey Price. So if you think my analagy is off, take a look at your own

The point is that EVERY 20 year old goalie suffers from inconsistency, EVERY 20 year old goalie shows flashes of brilliance and 90% of 20 year old goalies DO NOT MAKE THE LEAGUE!

The expectation that Price should have performed better than he did is ridiculous. Please somebody go and find me more than 3-4 goalies in the last 50 years who accomplished what he did last season at 20 or less.

    THEY DO NOT EXIST.

Expecting him to compare with guys with 5-10 years experience and Vezina/Stanley Cup wins is insane. It is unrealistic expectation and a standard that NOBODY, not even Patrick Roy attained.

And SAKS, I take your post with a wink and a smile ;) , but I am not defending Price. Just a simple analysis of what he achieved last season.

I guess we'll agree to disagree then.

IMO, age comparisons are interesting when they're younger, like a 12-year old Gretzky playing against 17 year olds (or whatever it was he did). In the NHL, players of all ages suffer from inconsistency, can show flashes of brilliance, etc. A legend like Hasek gets benched. Age doesn't matter - only performance. Saying a 'good' or 'very good' season from any other goalie is an 'excellent' season because the goalie happens to be 20, doesn't make the season any better.

For the record, I do like Price, and think he will be a fine goalie for the Canadiens for many years.

  16. I am not making FINAL judgements on his career. I am judging what he did LAST SEASON.

You are viewing it as good or ok. Go look at his stats and compare him to his peers at 20 years of age.

He just had one of the best seasons for a 20 year old goalie in the last 50 years.

Roy was mediocre during the 86 regular season, greats like Dryden, Esposito, Belfour, Nabakov, Hasek were all in their mid to late 20s when they entered the league.

Brodeur was in Utica at 20, Luongo struggling on Long Island etc etc etc.

The expectations hoisted on him are ridiculous, and they are the reason that you come up with observations of good to ok.

If a 12 year old boy ran a 10.5 second 100m dash you would not judge him slow because he did not break 10 second barrier like the greats of the sport.

You would be amazed and then you would go back and look at what the greats ran at 12 years old to judge where he is.

Carey Price HAD A FANTASTIC SEASON.

Judging him against Luongo (29 yrs), Brodeur (36 yrs), Nabakov (33), Lundqvist (26) last year is ridiculous.

Disagree. What Habsfan said may be slightly understated, but it's about right. I don't really care about his age. Next year, do we only compare him to 21 year olds from years past? Bottom line is, Price is an NHL goalie, and he should be compared against other NHL goalies.

That said, his stats stack up very well. However, he had a bit of a tough time for awhile, leading him to be sent to the minors, and he had a rough go in the Philly series. It happens. I can understand his age being used to explain these struggles, but not to say he can't be compared to any other goalies, period.

Your 12 year old boy analogy doesn't really fit, either. Price is not physically or mentally immature. In the future, he may do better, but there's a real chance he may do worse (Steve Penney was pretty good for a little while).
