  2. Saku Talk: Tonight, the Montreal Canadiens pay tribute to the small Finn who held a lantern during a dark time in the history of the Montreal Canadiens. Drafted after the last time this proud organization lifted up the Stanley Cup, Saku Koivu still embodies both the spirit and stereotypes of the modern Habs. Small, skilled, smart and relentless, Saku watched this team win games they never should have and led them through criticism and controversy. Players tried to take the captaincy from him, several members of the media criticized his place and he was never offered a new contract when his final deal with the Canadiens expired. But Saku lives in the hearts of everyone, from those who saw him as in a rock between a hard place and those who never grew up with the memories of the 24th Stanley Cup. The last time a Hab led the league in scoring, even if it was a small sample size was Saku. While he doesn't deserve to see #11 retired or see his name in the Hall of Fame, Saku still deserves this tribute tonight for his contributions to the Montreal Canadiens in 14 seasons. With no captain on the roster, it only makes sense to pay tribute to the Finnish captain who wore the C as long as Beliveau. Game Talk: Rene Bourque returns to Montreal on the top line of Anaheim, a place he doesn't exactly deserve and Ducks fans are split about. The top team in the league currently, Anaheim has been dealing with injuries and sickness and lost poorly to the Leafs 6-2, which snapped a seven game winning streak. Emerson Etem was recalled from Norfolk. Montreal is their fourth stop on a five game road trip. Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens are on a three game winning streak which seems to deserve zero credit to the coach and is purely the team fighting an uphill battle against a tyrannical coach. Habs have outscored their opponents 13-4 in the past three games. Andrighetto was sent down to the AHL with Eller close to return. Price has started the past seven games. No word on which goalie will be playing tonight but Tokarski was sporting a white goalie mask without design. Likely Price. Anaheim Ducks Rene Bourque - Ryan Getzlaf - Devante Smith-Pelly Matt Beleskey - Ryan Kesler - Emerson Etem Andrew Cogliano - Rickard Rakell - Jakob Silfverberg Patrick Maroon - Nate Thompson - Tim Jackman Cam Fowler - Ben Lovejoy Hampus Lindholm - Colby Robak Clayton Stoner - Sami Vatanen Andersen Montreal Canadiens Max Pacioretty - Alex Galchenyuk - Brendan Gallagher Jiri Sekac - Tomas Plekanec - Dale Weise Brandon Prust - David Desharnais - P.A. 11. There's only so much time we can spend blathering on about David Desharnais and Michel Therrien before we have an actual hockey game to discuss. Three day break is too long. This is a winnable game. The Carolina Hurricanes are the worst team in the east on a five game losing streak. They have allowed as many goals as the Habs have scored. They are 3-11-2 on the road. The Atlantic is getting tight (Detroit and Tampa have 41 points, Habs have 40, Leafs have 39). No sleepy first periods. 13. Long long ago, like in November, Montreal wasn't doing too well. They just got blanked by the Blackhawks 5-0. It wasn't looking good. Everyone was commenting on how this team was a bunch of pretenders. But then I did a GDT and the team just started winning again! It went for like a really long time too. The team eventually lost and I haven't done a GDT since... until now. 15. Last week, the Bulldogs (11-10-3) beat the Flames (14-10-1-0) to secure their first (and only) win over a team with a + .500 record this season. 23. Call it a trap game. The future seems to be here for Montreal, who sit atop the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 16-6-1. Their thirty-three points are one point ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins who are at 32 points with two games in hand. Buffalo, on the other hand, is a team of the future. They stink. They know they stink. Their fans have hung a banner that reads "Embrace the Tank." The Sabres might be the worst team any of us under the age of thirty can remember, but Coach T isn't taking them lightly: “Every game is important. We approach every game with enthusiasm and with a serious nature. It won’t be any different on Friday night,” stressed Therrien. “Buffalo is a team that got back on track. They weren’t easy to play against the last time around. They’ve started to play solid hockey. It will be a good test.” Well, I don't know if any of that is true, but the Sabres will get two bites at the apple in a home and home series. The Sabres feature two spurned Habs looking to do some damage. The Habs chose to move on from Josh Gorges and Brian Gionta over the summer, and they have only had success in the early going of the season. To enact their revenge, Gorges plans on dumping the puck in on the strong side of the net during and extended cycle while Gionta promises to blow at least one odd man rush with a weak wrist shot. Oh, the memories. Lineups: Montreal may ice the same lineup as Sunday when they faced off against the Rangers. In practice, Tom Gilbert lined up as the seventh defenseman, so he might be out. Eric Tangradi has been recalled, meaning the Habs not only have a real fourth liner, but someone who can pass as an NHLer, unlike Drayson Bowman. Add that to the fact that PA Parenteau practiced as a fourth forward on the PP yesterday, and we can guess that Gilbert will sit. No idea who starts in nets. Buffalo is icing a collection of washed up veterans, players dying for the trade deadline and rookies.
