Jerry Bruckheimer wants a team

Apologies if this is already in another thread I am not aware about. The league has been getting several inquiries for expansion to 32 teams. Bruckheimer is in negotiations with the NHL for a team in Las Vegas.

TSN is saying that while it is all true; they do not expect expansion to take place for 4-5 years.

dear god more expansion to more pointless american cities.

Like the guys on the national radio call in show I listen to: (fox sports radio)

If your going to expand, expand into Canada and Northeast or where hockey is actually followed.

Enough of West coast, sun belt teams. It's just not working. Nor is it good for the league.

The more you dilute the league with non traditional teams the more and more NHL slips into the oblivion. NHL is at its strongest when teams like Boston, NYR, Montreal, Toronto, Phili, Detroit, Chicago are in the playoffs and in the Stanley Cup finals.

Because even the non hockey fan knows those teams. I doubt they could name the Columbus Blue Jackets, Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers and so on.

Until Bettman realizes this hockey will continue to slide into oblivion.

I agree, that we fans do not need to see the game's talent levels watered down any more. Of course the NHLPA will approve of such a move, because it will mean more members to add to their union ranks.

There is a double-edged sword to expansion from a business perspective. The NHL owners would not have to include any expansion fees into the league revenues considered for calculating the salary cap. So, the owners would be receiving pure profit from these expansion fees just for allowing new teams to enter. During the last round of expansion, that cost was $80 million for a new team, and the rumours are that it may go up to around $150 million. However, by adding new teams, once those teams are underway, then their revenues would go towards the salary cap calculations, which should drive up the cap. Again, the NHLPA would be happy to see expansion, but I can't help but wonder what the small market teams would be thinking.

Eric Duhatschek has an excellent article on this expansion issue:

I'm quite happy with good owners, or possible owners like Jerry Bruckheimer or Jim Balsillie; But am cautious with looking at expansion.

I'd like to see Canadian cities on lists of future growth; but don't mind Vegas or KC. as long as the variables are in place from marketing to coorporate sponsors with a long term investment in the team.

Vegas is a possible area that could further the game in the US; because of the higher media coverage that I feel it could get. But needless to say; if the NHL is looking for a sure shot at making an expansion team pay off in the long run, then look long and hard in the Canadian market! Afterall, the Canadian teams are funding the lions share of the revenues to make this league viable. DONT bite the had that feeds you...

GO CANADA GO!

they should move the panthers to vegas

A team there would get the gambling fans in on the game. That;s why the NFL is so popular

Do they know what hockey is in Kansas city? seems like it would be a Nashville type thing where no one would go to there games. and they would have to begin blacking out the stands because their so embarrassed that no one goes to there games.
