Quick notes and anecdotes from what I noticed from the Habs interviewing Carbo, Timmins and Gainey on RDS.

-Carbo was lying when he said he had no clue who the Habs had on their draft list. That was a given, it was all over his face.

-I liked when Timmins told the RDS guy "Let's talk about Ryan McDonagh instead" when the RDS guy asked him why they didn't pick Esposito.

-Gainey was nice throughout all the interviews despite being fired with the usual RDS stuff. I know I'd be tired of hearing the same things over and over.

What I don't understand is that the scouting report on Patch says he is a risky player....

For the life of me, WHY DIDNT WE PICK ESPOSITO if we were going to draft a risky player who makes "risky decisions on the ice" in the way Patch does....??

Timmins said we were going to hit a home run, and so far I feel like we have grounded out to first with that second pick. Gainey could've packaged #22 and maybe a second rounder or soemthing to move up like 3 or 4 spots and nab Esposito. But no, instead we get this other guy and I guarantee you that Esposito will turn out better than Patch.

Eposito is going to haunt us for not choosing him, I can see it now.

yeah well you don't understand much the pacioretty pick, but you had him right there, but one rank later!

The only thing I didn't understand was that I had a feeling Bob was going to get a checker (Perron or whoever) and didn't expect Patches to fill that role due to Lats.. I put him down for Nashville because they showed in the playoffs they needed a guy like him who can do a bit of everything and still manage to get some shots in (aka a potential Hartnell replacement).

The rare pearl must have been McDonagh - I can definitely see how he stands out above other guys in the draft, especially to people like Timmins and Gainey. The picks will grow on you. I have no clue whether Esposito will be a superstar or not but I don't care. What I care about is McDonagh and Pacioretty and whoever we wind up taking in the later rounds of this draft.

If yuo look hard enough, you'll pretty much always have solid checkers available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds (like Ryan White, last year). We already have Chipchura as a 1st round defensive specialist, we don't need to use any more high picks on defensive forwards.

in the 1st sketch of my mock draft, I had pacciorety instead of perron but decided to switch due to the quebec link.

I'm glad that we got those two players. they bring stability on D and Grit up front. I like that some scouts compared pacioretty to erik cole, a really pain in the ass !!!

Ain't that the truth. You should some of the Avs boards, they're livid we didn't go with Cherepanov and, I shit you not, have given up on next season because of our drafting strategy. We took Shattenkirk, theres nothing we can do about it aside from hoping he becomes one of the best d-men in the NHL and bringing the Avs another Stanley Cup.

Theres a reason I hang out on a Habs board, haha.

For sure McDonagh was the rare pearl. You read the scouting reports on this guy and their awesome.

As for the defensive specialist issue, you always need some solid checkers (Perron is gone but Sweatt could be obtained). The Niedermayer-Pahlsson-Moen line spoke volumes in the playoffs for the importance of a checking line. I'm not saying Pacioretty is a bad pick, just saying it was a surprise :P

Max Pacioretty went to my high school three years ago (new canaan), he played his freshman year! Then he went to Taft which is a 20 min drive, one of the star players on my team this year is going to taft aswell.

His sister was in my math class this year, she was on tv with him

I knew he was going to be drafted but i didnt think by montreal!!!!

theres another kid from my town- Jack Downing. he is in the draft but isnt going till 3rd or 4th, I played with his brother on the high school team this year. he really sucks

haha it's funny you would mention that, cause Sam Gagner went to my high school, and is still good friends with alot of the kids a year older and comes to hang out...

Just a week ago I saw him at a party, and i just went up to him and said something like "you better fall so the habs can draft you" and he just laughed

it was quite weird to see him on T.V...

yvon pedneault says that the canadiens 'owe it to the québécois population/fans' to draft québécois players...

that's a crock... the canadiens 'owe it' to their fans to ice the best team possible...

GO :hlogo: GO!

i am upset over not picking Espo, but i dont agree with Pedneault there. thats right they owe us competitive teams which we havent seen in 14 years.

I'm not going to get worked up about the draft...because you really don't know 99 percent of the time until a couple of years later. Nobody in this draft is a "can't miss" player a-la Crosby or Ovechkin...so don't get too fired up about it. The only thing that would have aggravated me would have been a goaltender drafted with one of the two first-round picks, because the Habs are set there. But I can't say the team is set at any other position, so...a wait-and-see approach seems prudent.

Timmins told la presse that they tried to acquire a 3rd first round pick to get esposito but know one would bite.

Is this idiotic and nativist 'tit gar de chez nous' bullcrap ever going to go away?

Alfie Turcotte.

Alain Heroux.

Danny Geffrion.

José Charbonneau.

Normand Dupont.

Eric Chouinard.

All first-round francophone Habs' draft choices hailed by the French press as the offensive superstars in the making, veritable saviours of the franchise! but alas - despite being drafted in the first round - all cruelly crushed under the cigar-chomping Habs' management that clearly wants to humiliate and degrade the entire French Canadian people.

Oh, wait...turns out those players just plain sucked ass!

Then there's other local heroes like:

Gibert Dionne.

Stephane Lebeau.

Also hailed by the press, their marginalization on the roster used by the French press to attack the coaches and management. Also complete and absolute garbage.

To say nothing of legitimate NHLers like Pierre Larouche, Stephane Richer, and Mike Riberio: talented players but immature babies who were too busy being big fish in a small pond ever to bear down and become the reliable stars their talent would have allowed them to become. No, no, it's the Habs' fault Larouche couldn't be counted on to work hard, that Richer decided it was too much pressure to skate hard and shoot the frigging puck with regularity, that Ribeiro repeatedly failed to step up when Koivu was hurt.

The only good thing about this is that they're now counting 'ethnic' Quebecers among the 'tit gars de chez nous.' On the one hand that's admirable, but it just leads to an expanded list of 'victims' of evil anti-Quebec Habs management.

Bottom line: the Wickenheiser pick was 27 years ago. LET IT GO, YOU MORONS.

lol more comments from the media like that just proves and proves and proves my point and I think Bob Gainey's about playing in Montreal is that the fans are insane and the media needs to be hospitalized.

First, Just want to state, I have been a Diehard fan of the Canadiens since I was 5, Living out here In Edmonton over the years ( luckily, there are great many Fans out here) , I Have been reading all the time, and checking up on all the latest on this site, GREAT JOB by the way, keeps me weel informed.

I finally felt compelled to post on here. Like all of you excited about today, For FIRST : HABS , 2nd Oilers.

Reading comments, First Gainey, Timmins Et Al, had a strategy in mind. Getting a Defenceman, and a Foward ( ideally a Centre, I read somewhere, Bigger Forward).

Obviously they are ecstatic about getting Ryan McDonagh , who some say is the top D-man in the draft, and based on all accounts this is a solid Choice!! With Goaltending Price/Halak, and their young prospects the back is solid...

Addressing issue at centre, Max Pacioretty is a winger, they obviously see a big power forward potential here.

Only in 3 to 5 years we can judge the success of this draft. In the end Angelo Esposito will not hurt us in not picking him..for all the reasons discussed.

Lets look at both picks, down the road would we say prefer McDonagh/ Pacioretty, or Chereponov/Petrecki( or Smith/Blum) or even McDonagh/Backlund , ALL options without any trading.

The issue of a CENTER prospect with UPSIDE potential hasnt been addressed as of yet, CHEREPONOV , showed AT Russian Elite league, World Juniors he proved he can compete at high level at his age, moreso then any other prospect ( Rangers stole him at 17!!) I am sure Gainey and Company with wwhat happen this year witht he Russians in the organization might have impacted their decision.

So why not McDonagh/Backlund. if concern on Russians...Pacioretty must of really stood out for them...( hope he doesnt turn out to be another David Maley, or worse some of the Big "power forward prospects that were all busts in years gone by, : Terry Ryan etc......)

Obviously, a Center UFA will be signed, Briere, Drury, Add more Americans : Gomez, will be interesting to see....

Here is hoping Gainey and Timmins Track record continue......

By the way, how about sometime before next years trade deadline Trade HUET for a a first in 2009 and fli flop in 2008 to say a team like Phoenix for a chance at lottery for TAVARES ( and if he is allowed to enter draft in 2008) never know, look at what leafs gave up and Florida...for Goalies...Leafs what are they thinking: Giver up on top goalie prospect In RASK and miss out on a CHEREPONOV/ ESPO? whomever else????

Well just my thaughts. sorry about long first post...but was hoping for that CENTER UPSIDE PROSPECT AS ABOVE....

Cheers.........
