#140 (5th Round) - D - Joe Stejskal - Grand Rapids Thunderhawks (USHSW)

Height: 6′2″ Weight: 186lbs Shoots: Right

Why would we select him?: Joe Stejskal was the workhorse on the blueline, that along with dynamic forward Patrick White led the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks to the State title game the last two seasons. Stejskal is a steady two-way defenseman who will get involved physically. In addition to his solid positioning, decent shot and great hockey sense Stejskal is not your typical athlete, as he’s a scholar as well. His favorite class in school was calculus and he’ll have a chance to play hockey and exercise his mental muscles when he attends Dartmouth (ECAC) next fall. As is the case with most kids coming out of high school, he’ll have to get stronger to succeed at the pro level. Stejskal is the fairly safe long-term project defenseman this team should seek out to replenish its crop of blueliners. Stejskal made a considerable jump from his mid-season ranking from Central Scouting where he was rated 133rd to being rated 95th in their final assessment.

Maybe Gainey is building up the D in this draft because he is going to address our offensive concerns via free agency... who knows?

I honestly think we now have the best D pool on the planet.
