Well, at forward its Plekanec,Higgins,Latendresse,AKost and SKost.

At D, its Markov,Komisarek and Gorges, O'Byrne coming.

That's, pretty good !!!! :hlogo:

Hamrlik is in the core on D, seeing as how we have him for three more years. And I wouldn't be so quick to put Gorges and O'Byrne into our core; they haven't earned it yet, although I don't see us letting them go any time soon.

Gorges as a core player is just laughable to me.

Here's what I would put it as from guys on the current roster or AHL (in terms of guys the team will be built around for the future):

Forwards - Plekanec, Higgins, Latendresse, the Kostitsyns, Chipchura.

Defense - Markov, Komisarek

Goal - Price

It seems like you're not talking about Kovalev, Koivu and Huet so I would say Higgins, Plekanec, the Kostitsyns, Latendresse, Price, McDonagh, and after them, it's a dogfight between a whole bunch of guys.

But if we're looking at our current NHL team, I'd say that everyone is the core. I would maybe exclude guys like Brisebois, Dandenault and Smolinski, but I think just about every player on the team serves a purpose to us and everyone works together. I couldn't really pick out just 5 or so players that make up the whole team - that would only tell half the story.

Our core? IMO it's

Kovalev - Plekanec - Kosty Sr - Kosty Jr - Higgins - Latendresse - Lapierre

Markov - Komisarek - Harmrlik

Huet - Price

oops FUTURE core. Sowwy, I missed that key word.

You have to define future tough.

2-3 years from now, Kovalev is still part of our core IMO. 5-6 years from now, he is either retired or on the decline.

I'll look in the future more...

C: Plex, Lapierre, Chipchura

LW: Higgins, Kostitsyn, Latendresse

RW: Kostitsyn, D'Agostini

D: Markov, Komisarek, O'Byrne, Valentenko, Carle, McDonagh

G: Price, Halak

D'Agostini should be the next Bulldogs alumni to make the jump next season. Valentenko & Carle have been improving by strides lately and both will eventually replace Brisebois/Bouillon/Gorges/Streit...

I don't know; I tend to think of 'core' as those players who are really hard to replace should you lose them. My off-the-cuff thoughts on this:

'CORE' FORWARDS for the next 3-4 seasons:

Plekanec

Both Kostityns

Koivu (on a decline, but still the team's psychological pivot)

Higgins

Latendresse (gradually improving to bona-fide 'power forward' status)

'CORE' DEFENDERS over the same span:

Komisarek

Markov

Hamrlik (when are people going to realize that our top-3 D are among the best top-3 in the league?)

*possibly* O'Bryne

PLUS

Price (with Huet possibly sticking around for 1-2 years before being moved)

Everyone else is sheer speculation, or else a great role player (e.g., Chipchura), and I think that only the greatest role-players, such as Gainey or Carbo, rate as 'core.'

You need to define core before you say who

Young current it is really semantics.

Thats a great point.

I was thinking 3 years down the line, but a smarter man than me

once explained a trade I thought we had won in this way. There's

short, medium and long term gain/s, which one is this?

I was thinking Valentenko has moved ahead for Emelin, on my

future depth chart. And I see him as a replacement for Bouillon

at some point next year.

I really like Halak, but Price is our future, IMHO. I want to see

us re-sign Huet to mentor Price. So, I think we have to trade Halak

or we'll lose him to Europe.

Those are some of my thoughts. I was just thinking what do you

think? You guys know your stuff and you might change my mind.

So, I'm curious about your ideas.

I'd say Valentenko has a shot at playing a bit in the NHL next year if we get hit with injuries, but it's only the year after that he'd be seriously considered for a roster spot.

Carle I guess would go in the same category as Valentenko, although for some reason I see Valentenko as having more of an upside.

D'Agostini, I dunno if he'll ever be an impact guy in the NHL, but who knows.

Emelin sounds like he has raw potential, but we don't even know if he'll come over at all, and afterwords he'd need a few developmental years.

And so the list goes on. We really can't rate any of these guys in our core at this point, they're nowhere near their projected potential, which they may never reach. Maybe in a couple of years we'll be able to look at some of them as our 'future core.'

Fair enough about Gorges. We each have our opinion.

There's just something about Gorges that I like. Its hard to

put into words. He's got an excellent first pass and his skating

is elite. He needs to gain 10+lbs but he's got huge upside,

IMHO. Also, he's not intimidated when the game gets physical.

Yes, the list does go on.

If you look at what some of our young players have accomplished at the NHL level, there's

really NO reason to believe the pipeline will stop. Timmons and his scouts just keep finding

quality.

The core is not that many players. The core are the players that make you win.

To define a core plaayer we have to be sure he proves it for at least 3 years.

I had Higgins in my core players for this year, i was wrong, even if is underperforming

the team wins anyway.

I wouln's say the same thing for Komisarek,Markov, Huet, Plekanek and Kovalev.

So before being name as a core the guy needs to be listed for MVP of the team for the year,

year after year.

Higgins will have to bounce back before being considered a core.

Both Kots will have to play three years producing at great moments.

Latendresse will have to score more than 1/4 of goal opportunities

Chipchura will have to win face off and be a defensive force.

All the D prospects will have to play with confidence and proove something at NHL level before being considered as MVP players.

And finally Price will have to stand to all the expectations, humiliation and daily

presure of being a number 1 in Montreal.

Right. Gorges has been playing the way we expect Hamrlik to and Hamrlik has been doing what we expected of Gorges. And I'm talking about the past 15 or so games, our bottom pairing of Bouillon-Gorges has been playing like a good second pairing which is one of our most major improvements over our team at the start of the season. We used to be constantly worrying about how to match two of our depth defenceman together without making any of our pairings a liability. Now that we've accomplished that, it's the other team that has to worry about their D when they play us. I'm not so sure I'd put him in our core but he's only 22 yet better than any of our other D prospects (including Komisarek, at his age).
