The Spin with Steve Kouleas

It's really difficult to find an intelligent hockey show on television. Its especially saddening that this is the case living in Canada. Living in the hockey capital of the world for some reason doesn't seem to guarantee having responsible and intelligent media personel available to cover the game that we all know and love. Nearly all the hockey news seem to either lack something or be filled with huge biases depending on where they are filmed and who the host is.

TSN. TSN has perhaps the most well connected Hockey insider in the business in Bob Mackenzie. (Mackenzie was able to pin point the exact day the lock out ended weeks before it happed, just as an example). Unfortunately, Bob Mackenzie doesn't have his own show. He's surrounded by the most unproffesional, un proven, incoherant and repetitive writers and crew members (aside from the halarious James Duthie who mysteriously doesn't get enough one on one time with the camera). They have a Maple Leafs junkie in Darren Dregr who seriously beleives that the Leafs are within an inch of Hiring Ken Holland of Brian Burke. (even though Mackenzie said it was a possibility, he said that the chances were miniscule at best. They hired Mike Milbury who signed Yashin to a 10 year deal and destroyed the Iles. They once hired Tie Domi who could use up an entire 2 minute segment saying "Comman!" and trying to string sentences together like a kid who's trying to convince his teacher that the dog actually did eat his homework. Glen Healey always seems to be angry and "intense" but if you listen closely, never really says anything but say that if players don't step up, they'll lose and vice versa. Gino Reda isn't allowed to give his opinion on anything and Jeremy Roenick picked Atlanta to beat the Rangers last year (that'll show them to hire a guy with concussion problems). They now hired JFJ to be an analyst at the trade deadline after they critisized him for being a bad GM, something they did with Milbury. Luckily they have Pierre McGuire, but they don't let him speak his mind enough. They give him a chance to let people know who his Monsters are and make him call the games. If only they let him speak like Mitch Melnyk does on the Team 990.

HNIC. Although Don Cherry is entertaining, he never really says anythign too contructive and let's his love for the Leafs cloud his opinions. And the Hotstove basically ends up being a conversation about how the Leafs need to trade Sundin.

Sportsnet. Nick Kyrpreous is only out dimwitted by Tie Domi. All he does is state the obvious. "They need to shoot more. If you don't shoot, you can't score, because you just don't get chances". Also, these are the guys who hired Eklund to be their deadline specialist one year.

RDS. Although they provide an in depth look at the Habs, they always seem to just pick on certain players at certain times of the year, and never really give other teams credit when its due. Also, they spend too much time oozing over French Canadian players like Lecavalier but don't like mentioning that they can't play Defense, or that Latendresse can't skate. And while they have Jaques Demers who kinda knows what he's talking about, he constantly has to waste his time defending the habs from the guys on 110%.

110%. Won't even go there.

The Spin. This show is on every night on the Score. Its a shame its not available on basic cable in Quebec. Their host, Steve Kouleas, although he looks young, seems to have the entire hockey history book burned into his memory. He's opinionated, talks about every team in the league, doesn't make constant outlandish coments like constantly predicting cup winners. He also spends relatively little time talkign about the Leafs. Also, he's not a softie. He refuses to have anyone on his show who hates fighting and doesn't cry about headshots too much. His right hand man on Most nights, Steve Ludzick, is like a reserved Don Cherry with insight and without the Toronto Bias. They also have Al Stacken, a senior writer at THN. Besides Bob Mackenzie, you won't find a guy who knows about the business side of hockey more than him. They cover the highlights on ever game and talk about the story on EVERY team in the league. They also don't shy away from critisizing Bettman and Cambell for questionable decisions. They also argue bad calls with an Ex-Linesman to show the NHL's side of the story. If you don't get the Score, i suggest you subscribe, this show alone i worth it. (Also, they were the only ppl on TV with enough grapefruits to rip Guy Bertrand about the Koivu comments and the Federal Government about questioning Shane Doan's Captaincy at the World Championships)

Excellent post. I watch the spin occasionally for a lot of the reasons you just stated. I like TSN but I hate the bias for Toronto etc. Sportsnet just sickens me with Watters and Kypreos.

Let me use italics he's getting old....

he's 74.

If Stalone can pump out Rockey and Rambo in his 60's, then Cherry can go untill he's 90

I like watching Bob McKeown on Fan 590 (Sportsnet plays it a lot). Other than that, Sportsnet is the worst channel on TV.

Ya he's ok. I wish PJ Stock had his own show on TV. McKown is way too professional for me.

I enjoy listening to Bob McCown - he's fairly entertaining. But, most of the hockey insight on his show comes from his guests. Bob tries, but he sounds more intelligent when talking about sports he actually likes, like football and baseball.

The thing that bothers me about Kouleas is he tends to be like Maguire and get a little too enthusiatic about what he says, and he starts shouting unnecessarily. I wonder how many audio guys he's given busted ear drums to. The other thing they have to do is get rid of Strachan. I like Ludzik, who's probably an heir to Cherry's spot should he want it, and Barnaby's been on it a few times as well. I think they need another media guy to make it complete though.

I agree that The Spin is a good show. Kouleas also has a talk radio show which they also air on the Score called Hardcore Hockey Talk. TSN is the best for pure insider knowledge but The Spin and Hardcore are good at talking about Hockey in General
