OBP is not useless even when in front of the pitcher. Even if you assume the pitcher is an automatic out, Ross would still be on base for the leadoff hitter. I think you are looking at BA too much. If Ross can't play defense or call games, I guess it is reasonable.

That would also assume we have a leadoff hitter who is worth a crap, haha. I think OBP is overrated for the 8 hitter since a good number of those walks are intentional, or at least semi-intentional. Last year when he was coming off his 20 homer season and hitting in the 6 and 7 spot more often, his OBP was below .300.
