Habs UFA and RFA Signings

Recommended Posts

Two great signings that plug holes like a contending team needs to.

Laraque will allow Komisarek to focus on his game and not have to fight so much. It'll also let Kosto have a break when facing heavyweights. Laraque will probably play on the RW of Lats & Laps... So that'll be the La-La-La line, one that should cause a tons of headaches to opposing defense.

Denis' signing was mentionned in the newspapers about a week ago. He wanted an NHL job but I guess nobody was interested so the Habs' offer was the best choice. Denis was once a high-touted prospect and I do think that working with Melanson will get his career back on track. At best, he'll make sure the Halak/Price tandem dont feel too comfortable; at worst he'll mentor Cedrick Desjardins.

Finally, FINALLY we'll see our Habs win a fight. I like many others would dearly love to see Georges pound Chara face in. And hey, now we have Gorges and Georges.

Laraque has been my favourite goon in the league for a while now, and I'm really happy to see him in the CH, I think he'll be a great fit.

Yup that would be nice. He is a good 3rd goalie and may be able to push the Kids if need be. In all i say a good sign since i'm not sure of the finacial terms but i'm sure it is not too much.

The Laraque signing is awesome. We finally have a true tough guy with a little bit of skill. Not only is he one of the toughest people in hockey but he is fantastic at working the puck along the boards.

I read on TSN that we also signed defenseman/winger Alex Henry 6 foot five, 220 lbs. I have no idea who he is! I wonder if he is for Hamilton?

Signing Marc Denis is great news, although I was surprised at first that he accepted the role of 3rd goalie and AHL starter. However, looking at the current goalie situation for all teams, there isn't one team (except maybe Dallas) that could offer him a number two spot (I didn't know Boucher had resigned in San Jose).

Laraque fills a need for the team that the Begin, Kostopoulos, and Lapierre are all incapable of filling, so that's also good news.

I was scared at first that this would cost Kyle Chipchura his spot in the lineup, but I was glad to hear Gainey say that he's going to camp with a roster spot, and it's only his to lose. I was very disappointed that we didn't bring up for the playoffs last year, as this is where he truly shines, and the experience would have been tremendous for his development.; I also think he could have made a small difference against the Flyers, getting his nose dirty, and picking up cluch garbage goals.

Finally, I like that Gainey is stopping there for now. There is only one available UFA that can make a difference in Montreal, and it's Mats Sundin. If we can't sign him, we need to start the season with the players in place, stay away from the Huselius and other overrated support players, keep our cap space, and wait for a trade opportunity that will bring us that impact player. For all we know, there could be another Thornton-like opportunity presenting itself.

I'm pleased with the roster as it is. We're not a top contender because there are a few "if"s too many, but we're a strong contender nonetheless.

I don't know that I agree about Huselius being overrated, but Columbus signed him yesterday, so it's a moot point in any case!

And, yes, I, too, would be happy to start the season with the current crew (plus a signed contract with Halak). We might even have some cap room come trade deadline ...

Gainey, please forget Sundin and re-sign Komisarek LONG TERM ASAP !!

If players like Mark Streit and Michael Ryder got 4 million$+ per year, how much do you think a guy like Komisarek is gonna cost us???? I'm starting to think that it'll cost the Habs at least 5 million$ per year over 5 or 6 years! I still think he'd be worth it!

Of course it's gonna cost at least 5 million, he's one of the top defensive d-men in the league. Top three in both hits and blocked shots last year. Thankfully, this is a league that pays for points, so I don't think he'll be signing for Dion Phaneuf type money.

And that's probably why Bob Gainey will ask Guy Carbonneau not to play Komisarek on the power play this season, no matter what :P

Although I do believe Komisarek could cause a surprise, he's a smart player, and he did have succes in both the NCAA and the AHL, where as a rookie he was producing just as much if not more than older Bulldogs defensemen, including powerplay specialist M-A Bergeron.

If somehow Komisarek gets a chance on the powerplay, and he does well... $$$

The Denis signing is awesome news. With the departure of Danis, we needed an AHL goalie and not only does Denis provide that but he also is a legitimate backup solution at the NHL level in case of injuries or Halak hitting a goalie slump. This is the answer for those concerned that we didn't have enough experience in net. He also may be a good mentor for another Quebec goaltender on the Bulldogs, Cedric Desjardins.

This is a little move yet a very smart one and these little good decisions add up.

36.75M$ for 7 years, that's what i would ask if I was Komisarek. 5.25$/season.

I'd love it if we could Komi to accept that. But I don't think he'll go that long for that much.

He'd be crazy to turn that down. Most players these days look for long term security.

I doubt it. Long term contracts usually seem like you might be overpaying but the hope and point is as salaries inflate, what seems high turns out to be a bargain in year 5 or 6. Anyways I feel like your number may be low compared to what's going on in the market. Gainey is full of surprises(big tltis contract) so you never know. If TlTS was UFA he would have been offered WAY more.
