2009 World Junior Championship thread

In case anyone is still wondering (based on the discussion from a couple weeks back), Trunev did not make Team Russia. As they show on the front page poll, it is McDonagh, Kristo, Subban, and Torp representing their countries that are Habs prospects.

Subban always seems to be out of position on the PP. He jumps up to the slot and just wastes himself there.

this is Team Canada's strategy on the 1rst wave, not Subban's decision.

Subban is impressing me. He is patient with the puck when looking for the pass. He is a great passer. When he was hurt the other day against cze he got up and toughed it out because they were under pressure in their own zone. The PP is a little strange, but this is not a move a kid would make on his own. He is in the slot because Quinn wants a big body up there. 2 goals is always nice too.

the 04 one when Fleury f***ed up and the USA won gold. even with that mistake, the goaltending would be better than Beauchemin and Glass.

Thats just one area though. The WJC will never see a team as good as Canada's 04-05 team, most of those guys should've been playing in the NHL. We were ridiculously better then everyone else that year.

the team was still solid with guys like Carter, Richards, Crosby, fleury, phaneuf, coburn, weber...I think staal was there too.

Sure but technically they were still junior players the year before (Crosby was hardly even a factor). You throw in that extra year of experience and it's men playing with boys. The team even had a legit NHLer centering the top line. That team should've been without Bergeron, Carter, Getzlaf, Phanuef, Ladd, Barker, Coburn, Richards, Perry and Seabrook. All of those guys were guys that should've been playing in the NHL.

With the exception of the semis against the Czechs (a 3-1 win) every single game was a blowout including the gold medal game against a Russian team carrying the likes of Ovechkin and Malkin. We won that game 6-1 and averaged close to 7 goals a game.

I'm not saying the 2005 team was way better then the 2004 team, the numbers are pretty close with the edge going to 2005. What really seperates them is the 2005 team's talent gap between everyone else. They were never in danger of losing, there was never a tense moment. Plus the small fact the 2005 team didn't choke when the time came. The 2004 gold medal game was downright embarassing and 2005 made everyone forget very, very quickly.

Harding, Josh

2 Meech, Derek

3 Phaneuf, Dion

5 Gorges, Josh

6 Klein, Kevin

29 Coburn, Braydon

22 Burns, Brent

24 Dixon, Stephen

25 Talbot, Maxime

27 Dawes, Nigel

28 Crosby, Sidney

Team Canada 2005

35 Rejean Beauchemin

33 Jeff Glass

25 Cam Barker

4 Shawn Belle

29 Braydon Coburn

3 Dion Phaneuf

2 Brent Seabrook

20 Danny Syvret

6 Shea Weber

37 Patrice Bergeron

7 Jeff Carter

14 Stephen Dixon

11 Colin Fraser

15 Ryan Getzlaf

HUUUUGE advantage for 2005. Perry, Bergeron, Richards, Weber, Barker over Paillé, Talbot, Burns and Gorges... Goaltending is their only + because of Fleury.

Hard to say but if you asked last season who to choose between Subban and Weber, I would have picked Subban without hesitation.

Weber has done some great strides in the AHL don't get me wrong but he simply wasn't reliable defensively as Subban in juniors. Maybe because PK was paired with Nigel Williams?

PK has done great with Team Canada.

He is probably one of if not the leaders in +/-.

Can anyone find stats on the world juniors? I've searched and only found G, A, P.

That means very little at this point as we faced mediocre teams, is anyone really impressed that he got 4 points and was a +6 while Canada destroyed Kazakhstan? I'm a lot more interested in seeing how he does against the US, Russia, and Sewden.
