All things HALAK

Don't be surprised if Halak either winds up traded, in Europe or getting an offer sheet (probably the best scenario for us). We definitely want to keep him but that is the trouble of raising two goalies with starting potential at the same time. Halak will probably want 30 starts. We might be able to give that to him, but I think the organization is looking more at a 60/20 split.

I wonder if they won't go 57/25 or 55/27 next season. Price did kind of break down a little and the Brodeur

model of grinding a guy all season seems to be falling out of favour lately because he has faltered in the playoffs.

Agreed. He is young, but a guy is size will burn quickly. You could see in his face how exhausted he was the last few games, I'm sure stress had a lot to do with that. I'd like to see a 60/30 split. Halak may even find that fair.

I say trade him and sign kolzig as a back up.

I'm sure we could get a good return and kolzig would work well with price since the already know eachother well.

I'm not sure I would trade him to Washington, but if we did trade him somewhere, bringing in Kolzig as a solid veteran, to mentor Price and play a few games is a brilliant idea. Since they already have a relationship and Kolzig is getting old that just might resolve the issue and everyone would benefit.

If we had to get rid of Halak this would be the way to do it.

Gainey!!!!!!! You listening?

What is Kolzig's UFA status?

If there is a market for Halak then I would like to trade him.

Price is clearly our guy. How long could we string Halak along playing 25ish games, dangling that carrot in front of him that he could outplay Price and earn the starters job?

Let the kid go.

Not to mention that Price would benifit from a vet gaolie as back up. Kolzig, Joseph... An experienced guy able to "coach" Price and play some decent hockey too.

Not an official link but according to this Caps fan Olaf is UFA this summer. Hmmmmmmm

KOLZIG Free this summer?

May be just the right thing to help Price develop more comfortably.

Confirmed........He is available. I'm sure he would take a huge pay-cut. His price tag is quite steep.

AVAILABLE HE IS......

How wierd would that be... Switching Huet for Kolzig

Kolzig won't sign anywhere but Washington. He has an autistic daughter and he needs to stay close to home to help care for her. He will likely retire this summer and maybe join the Caps' front office.

Washington DC is the best place in the world to live if you have a loved one suffering from autism, so to me him moving is not a possibility.

I didn't know that. Too bad.

Joseph would likely sign for close to the league minimum.

I wouldn't challenge what you are saying, but autism awareness is at a peak with so many children suffering. Montreal being such a big city there has to be some great programs available. Regardless, I do feel bringing in Kolzig would be a very smart option for Gainey to investigate. A lot of individuals would benefit.

What we have done recently is follow a plan and that has pleased me, but what has irked me is that often we have done this without getting good return for our assets (see Huet and Ribeiro). Next season I would give Halak the starts he needs to prove his worth as a solid young #1, then package him with picks and youth or whatever it takes for a power forward, that's the missing piece if we want to make a serious cup run in the Centennial.

I think that playing Price for about 55 games and giving the rest to Halak would be a good compromise for both goalies.

I think that we let Halak go if there is an offer sheet. In that case, we get either Kolzig or Joesph.

But when we traded Huet and Ribeiro, we didn't want them anymore. Halak is a guy we would still value, yet we could shop him around. I'm sure he'd get us more than a 2nd (not much more, but more).

Exactly. We sometimes telegraph it when we don't want a player anymore, feud with or sit them until their value drops, a la Roy and more recently with Ribeiro (and somewhat different situation but it's happening with Ryder). I would have showcased Ribs gave him lots of PP time to pad his stats and then looked to deal him. To apply this to the present situation ~ Halak's agent is starting to make noises about playing time. But if Halak gets a good dozen starts by Christmas and puts up the numbers he's capable of then we should get a great return from a team looking for a long-term solution to their goaltending needs. Halak is young with good provenance.

Anyone doubt Halak could be an NHL starter right away?

When was the last time a great backup returned anything other than picks in a trade?

Kipprusoff, Toskala, Bryzgalov, Biron, Roloson were all dealt for picks and Bryzgalov was dropped.

When was the last time a starting goalie returned a ransom in a trade?

Huet went for a 2nd, Theo for Aebsicher, Luongo for Bertuzzi.

For some reason GMs will not trade alot for goaltending. Amazing as it seems, the Habs will probably not get

fair market value for Halak.

Probably true but Halak has a lot going for him, won't be expensive and is developed and NHL-ready, yet still young. Anyway putting up some good season stats certainly wouldn't hurt. Personally I wish we could keep him but his agent's recent comments make that appear unlikely hope I'm wrong about that.

Having Kolzig as a back up is a terrible idea. He is far too old. I would rather have Danis backing up instaed of Kolzig. We have to sign Danis if we are to get rid of Halak

I think that's the point. If we HAVE to get rid of Halak, the best alternative would probably be the go with an experienced goalie and Kolzig has personally trained Price in the past, I believe so he would be an interesting choice. That being said, Kolzig probably isn't moving.

Danis has lost his starter's job in the AHL for 3 seasons in a row now.

Then I presume Jay Feaster would be the except that proves the rule? What a deal that was. Brad Richards for a grinder, a shootout specialist, and a backup goalie.

That was a salary dump and it is rare.

Why does everyone want to get rid of Halak? Having 2 good young goalies is a good idea. Competition is what everyone needs, it's also a cheap. Price can play 55-60 games and Halak can play 25-30 games.

I agree with you.

Alot of people want to fast track to the Cup and some fear that he will leave to go to Europe.

Give the kid 25 starts and see what he can do. Price should be fine playing close to 60 games.
