Were O'Bryne's mistakes really that much worst than Gorges?

O'Bryne gets benched, Gorges gets a free pass for his 2 big goofs in the same game.

So why doesnt O'Bryne get the same shot ?

Yeah Gorges is not a top 4 defenseman.

Even look at someone like Boston - Gorges would not even crack their lineup!

OB got scratched to protect him from the crowd at the Bell Centre.

We saw last game that the problem isn't O'Byrne as the team multiplied their mistakes, especially during the first period. The players need better support from the coaching staff as even in Year 3 of their mandate the team still can't execute a proper transition game. If Carbonneau and his staff don't have the knowledge and/or the capability to properly manage a defensive squad, it might be time for them to ask for help, and add a proven assistant coach to coordinate that defense.

Yes. It's getting to be painfully obvious that not having a defensive specialist on the coaching staff is a stupid move. Every other team has one. Given the sputtering of our transition game, Carbo just looks foolish (and stubborn) for not doing it.

Exactly... I wonder if they'll bench him for the whole homestand...

yes I was thinking along these lines.

Is Doug Jarvis really the best coach for the defensemen - someone that didn't play the position?

I am sure he is a great technical coach, and Muller and Carbonneau can all handle the Forwards -

but the D seem to lack proper coaching.

I think someone like Larry Robinson would be ideal to teach the D if he was available.

I thought Rick Green was a good Defenseman coach.

He also got benched because he deserved it.

That being said I hope the crowd will show some respect when he'll be back playing.

being scratched is part of growing up as a players, same thing goes fro Serge and Guillaume.

That's also true, O'Byrne is a struggling second-year player, and it was normal for him to be scratched at some point. However I hope that the coaching staff is working with him to fix whatever problems he has, showing him what he's doing well and what he's not doing so well. Sometimes a little break, some video sessions, and a few games from the players' box is all that is needed.

However I hope that Carbonneau isn't just tossing O'Byrne aside, and thinking he can go to war with Dandeneault as a regular in the lineup because then we're in trouble. He's a nice guy, I actually met him a couple weeks ago in a restaurant, but he wasn't good enough to be a top 6 defenseman a few years ago, and he hasn't improved since then. He's a half decent reserve player, and needs to go back into that role; the team will win with the likes of Latendresse, Kostsitsyn, and O'Byrne... not Dandeneault and Brisebois.

Dandy could be our #6 until a new d-man is added via trade, though. I think the "plan" is that if O'Byrne didn't work out, we'd look to acquire a new D to make a run this year.

Or it could be that Dandy simply had a bad year 2 years ago when he lost his job. He was a regular D in this league for a lot of years before 2006-07, and he was a decent one for us in 2005-06, particularily after Gainey took over as coach.

Interesting point that Dandeneault was not a 6th defenseman couple years ago, an he hasnt improved since - so really he should be a reserve player.

Well this is the time of year they should be playing O'Byrne and building him up - if they are not going to - then I most definetly see a trade for a Defenseman coming up.

With all the Vets and Free Agents after this year, there has to be a run for Top Defenseman.

Earlier I was agreeing we need a 4th defenseman - but if you really look at it...

Markov,Komisarek-Hamrik are 2-3-4 defenseman - we really need a #1 defenseman - someone like Charra if we are going to get serious about making a Cup Run.

Otherwise, lets stop pretending.

Markov is a #1, with the one caveat that he's done squat in the playoffs. Hammer is a perfectly good #2. Komi is an elite #3. It's a 4th defenceman we need.

Exactly. We don't need a #1 d-man, but a #4 d-man!!

Instead of oputting numbers on what the D needs, what they need is someone who can skate, skate the puck out of the zone ,make a good break out pass, play the right side with Hamrlik, and win some battles.

That type of player will be expensive to get, but the habs have some assests to get a deal done if they want.

I have a suspicion BG may be waiting on Sundin again before he makes a move. Obviously i could be wrong.

Boumeester is the Dman i would go after.

I would also like Bouwmeester but he might cost too much for us to make it worth it.

I don't even think we NEED a #4 d-man because Gorges has become a second pairing defenseman - but it would definitely help. As Chris said, instead of numbering defenseman and saying we need a #1 or a #4, it's more useful to rank the players by the skills they have. The type of d-man I think we could use is someone reliable. I don't really care if he's an offensive player or a defensive player but we need more guys like Hamrlik that we can always trust.

Another good, solid game by Gorges tonite. Looks very comfortable playing with Markov. He just keeps getting better and better.

Gorges is the reason we won't need to re-sign said #4 guy. But a rental could always be welcome because you never know who might go down in the postseason.

I'm talking about a rental as well. We're going to have enough trouble bringing back the guys on our team that we want to keep without thinking about 5-6.5M/y deals for Bouwmeester. But as a rental, he might not be that costly - they might even be interested in O'Byrne as a piece. I doubt other teams have as low an opinion of him as some Habs fans do.

I think it's safe to say that we can forget about Bouwmeester. He's gonna cost way too much. Let's not forget that we have 10 UFA's to resign and 3 RFA's to resign! That's gonna cost us a sh.itload of money!

I doubt BG signs many of those UFA's, especially if they bow out of the playoffs early again.

Komi for sure

Koivu if he wants to come back

Tanguay

I'm not sure who else they need that can't be replaced by younger and cheaper players.

I do like Begin, but it may be hard to sign him for alot of money.

He's an impending UFA which means he'll be cheaper to acquire and that we can let him go at the end of the year. We can't really have any hopes of bringing him back but he'd still be a big addition for the playoffs.

I'd throw Brett Clark's name into the mix. He can play heavy minutes, provide offense, may be available...
