PP Proposal

Guy hasn't been able to get the powerplay jump-started, so maybe it's time to take a different path. He's been moving the groupings around, but nothing's worked. So here's my thought. Stop trying to fix it for the moment. Just roll the lines like you normally would, to see if that loosens things up a little bit. It can't be any worse than it's been all season, and it just might take some of the pressure off.

Maybe it's too much passing and not enough crashing the net?

Either way, no one moves on the PP and it's always most effective when the forwards move on the ice since the opposition to has break up their defensive box.

We need a guy designated for the front of the net. Screening, rebounds, crasshing.

Then you get shots shots from decent areas, and some will go in. We are too "fancy" amd pass way too much.

yeah I think there is too much perimeter fancy passing and no crash the net stick, your ass in the goalies face type of play. Maybe nobody should be allowed to watch Kovy practice stick handling. Maybe they all want to emulate him. Not possible. In short get to the net, shoot lots, and from wherever and play with that edge you sometimes see them play with. Have BGL on the bench at least. And give this kid daigo a chance. Who knows maybe he can score.

You know, when we signed Hamrlik one his virtues was supposed to be his shot from the point. I realize that he's remade himself as a stalwart all-around defender - one of our best-kept-secret MVPs - but it might be worth asking him to rediscover that part of his game. I notice that he's been shooting more the last couple of games, maybe they've already done so. Still, try the Hammer as the go-to PP shot.

AKost looks decent on the 5-on-3 PP last night. His shot is fearsome (if he puts it on net and/or if every d-man we face doesnt pull a Lydman and blocks 7 shots every PK). Dont know if Carbo would gamble as far as to put AKost on the point on a regular 5-on-4 PP when penalty killers can pressure him more.

AKost looked great last night. It's too bad Weber couldn't be brought up and only played in the power play. Kinda like a Kicker in football.

Yeah AKost looked good on the point on a 5-3 but I don't think he is ready to play there on 5-4's. He doesn't have the experience as a defender. Any forward playing the point is going to have to break up some short handed rushes. If we put AKost on the point we'll give up too ay short handed goals.

I'm surprised Carbo hasn't really tried Hammer at the point either ... he's got a good shot, might not be the most accurate but if he can just get it though with traffic in front they're in business.

someone mentioned Zubov ... although he would be great I don't think it would really change much for Markov ... the thing with Markov is he runs the powerplay ... but from the left side ... when Souray and Streit were here they were on the right side for the one-timer and Markov was the feeder ... Zubov shooting right would mean Markov switches sides again and so far when he's done that this season he hasn't been as effective. Without bringing in outside help ... I think they should at least try Hammer on the right side but they really have to give him a chance and some games to get comfy.

I think they should get out the film from last year and compare our PP this year to last years, and then pinpoint what has changed. Other than losing Streit and adding Tanguay [who can't have hurt] the players are the same, and the coaches are the same. Unfortunatey tt may be that what is holding us back from scoring 5 on 5 is also hurting us on the PP. Either the guys are not working hard enough, or for some reason they are missing opportunities that they burried last year, or the other teams have figured out our system and we're being outcoached.

Streit does hurt because he was a power shot from the point. We have no besides Markov who is dangerous at the point now...

That said, the biggest issues is simple. A PP like ours requires crisp passing. When the team is struggling and players like Kovalev can neither hit the net nor make a simple a pass, then the PP goes down the tubes fast. If we had the big point shot we could compensate like most teams do, blast from the point with traffic in front, but that has not been that successful.

I believe that once the team gets its confidence back and starts playing solid hockey for 60 minutes, then the PP will follow and be much better. I don't think it will be as good as last year's addition, but it will get back to respectable.

Nothing wrong with passing except there is too much of it. Its the shots from the point (or lack thereof), Markov has the hardest, most accurate shot on the team but will not shoot. Long for the greediness of someone like Souray.

Am suprised Hamrlik not used more - former 1st pick overall - you know its a part of his game that just got buried somewhere along the way.

As well giving him some PP time, might give him more confidence to shoot more and join the rush when he see opportunities out there.

I still like Brisebois, hes old - but still very reliable on the PP in somehow finding the net when others fail.

Gorges or Komo could do good IMO. Both have good hard low shots.

Komi couldn't get a shot through if it had a police escort. 9 times out of 10, it gets blocked by the forwards. At least that's the way it works 5-on-5.

I think the real problem is size to power ratio.

He needs to learn how to shoot, although is has got better of the last two years.

Also I do not like to waste Komisareks minutes on the PP.

I'm starting t thin that the PP will not improve very much for the rest of the season. Our boys are more than 25% of the way into the season, and they are still 25th on the PP this year. I doubt they'll go from 14% to 23% by the end of the year.

They might improve to 17 or 18%, but not much more. After that pathetic attempt on saturday night (where they had a FULL 2 MINUTES of 5 on 3) where they didn't score, I'm starting to think that without a legitimate shooter at the point, the PP will continue to struggle!

It gets psychological after a while. The team actually starts dreading the PP. I saw this before, in the late 80s, when we had a great all-around team but were completely useless on the power play. In fact, I believe it hurt us badly in the Finals against Calgary in 1989. The refs suddenly and inexplicably started calling everything, and the Habs, being ill-equipped to win a specialty-teams series given their weak PP, were seriously disadvantaged in consequence. Eventually, and painfully, we lost.

Short of a trade (and trading Kovalev might be the best jolt we could give the PP at this point), there's nothing for it but to keep plugging away and remembering the fundamentals (move, move, move, screen, screen, screen, shoot, shoot, shoot). The goal should be to have the PP humming a respectable level down the stretch, so that we can roll into the playoffs with it. It's very important that we fix this, because unless we restore a dangerous PP other teams are going to clutch-and-grab, interfere, and brutalize us in the playoffs, and we - being more skilled than we are tough - won't stand a chance.

I know we miss the shooters at the point, but what we're missing more is confidence. The boys are afraid to try anything, and you can tell that they're thinking too much. They need to work harder on the boards, move more and shoot the puck more. I think a few games away from home might take the pressure off, and hopefully Muller can turn the PP around.
