As the Canadiens gathered in Brossard for a mid-afternoon pracrtice today, Sergei Kostitsyn was missing. The Canadiens sent him to the Hamilton Bulldogs yesterday and recalled Gregory Stewart.

The younger of the Kostitsyn brothers has played 52 games this season and had eight goals and 23 points. He was a minus-1. He also had 62 penalty minutes, most of the unnecessary variety.

Stewart, who had one assist in three games with the Canadiens earlier this season, has seven goalsand 10 assists in 51 games in Hamilton. He's a plus-8 and has an eye-catching 170 penalty minutes, the sixth-highest total in the AHL.

Not a fan of this at all.

Sergei is having some issues (with others depending which paper you read) but he has more production this season than Stewart has, except Sergei did it at the NHL level.

We don't need another grinder on the team.

lol, you beat me to it.

My guess is that this will save some salary as well? However, it is most likely to send a message. Look forward to seeing Stewart in action.

per my calcs Habs save almost $1,750 per day! WOW!

remember how shocked everyone was when we opened the year last season without lapierre with the big club. The reports were that the team wasn't happy with his attitude and they hoped some time back in hamilton would increase his drive and focus. That's what this smells like to me. This sends a message to the team that attitude matters and commitment to the team matters. Hopefully he goes down for a few weeks, plays great, and then responds when called back up to the big club.

I think this is a kind of punishment for Sergei. It's no secret that Sergei likes to spend his evenings partying in different Montreal nightclubs. Apparently all this attention has gone to his head and has turned him into a primadonna!! Higgins and Price are said to be his "party buddies".

Would you rather see Chipchura go up and down like a yoyo? The team needs a centre, and they need some sandpaper. I really liked what I saw from stewart when he was up. Way better than I expected. Between sending SK down and Kovy staying home for a game, that should be message enough to the rest. Perform or don't perform. It's up to you. But if you don't perform, you don't play.

The is so obviously a good move I don't understand the controversy. The Habs have WAY too many young players who clearly were not prepared to bring their A game this season; it's one of many things that have gone wrong. Sergei has accomplished jacksh*t in his career so far and is entitled to absolutely nothing. If he is a man, he will take his lumps and come back prepared to do the things that got him here. If he isn't, then we don't want him on our team to begin with. Way to go, Bob.

No surprises here.

The Habs brass have been trying to instill a philosophy that you can't take your spot for granted, that you have to prove yourself worthy of playing every game, especially if you're a young player.

Lats & Laps were scratched for about 3-4 games earlier this season; they came back with a vengeance. Sergei got the same treatment, but didnt step up. So down he goes.

"You dont want it bad enough? Fine, we'll dress someone who does".

It's not like he don't deserve it, but other players would deserve it as well. Almost the whole team, actually.

I'd rather see Sergei in Hamilton than in the press box. I like this decision, and I fully expect him back before the end of the year.

Especially if you take into account the partying rumours.

This is long overdue.....hopefully he doesn't head home for Mother Russia. Probably not, they can't even make payroll over there

I don't think he will. Sergei has always stated that he wants to play in the NHL... the payroll issues should only enforce this desire.

As someone said, he's definitely a primadonna. Dunno but all we heard about this guy this season was his sissi fight with Grabovski. Enjoy the ride to Hamilton with your Porsche Sergei, the only way back to Montréal will be hard work on the ice. Some very good moves by Bob in the last couple of days!
