KoZed
Anyone watched, heard or read about Kovy's press conference today? Man. Kovalev is just a bag full of surprises. His career is just like his stickhandlingL just when you think he's going one way, he goes the other way. Kovy has been sick. Lost a lot of weight. He looks sickly too. Anyway, somewhere in the press conference he basically said that he's a loner and he (can) only talk to Gainey. Is Bob really the only guy that can get through to Kovy, not due to some problem with the coaches but just because Kovy is Kovy and he only feels comfortable talking to Bob? There's some weird things going on with the Habs. We know Koivu & Gillet are like father & son since the cancer battle. Now it looks like Kovy & Gainey have some sort of special, warrior & old-wise-mentor bond... This season has had more twists than a daily soap opera
MAK
If he was that sick Gainey would've said :''he's sick, he stays home'' any how, I still think he's traded soon.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
This is all idle speculation, but somehow I suspect that Gainey is the only man in town that Kovalev doesn't, on some level, look down upon. He probably sees Carbo and the coaches as plodders - he used to play against two of them, after all, and they were all inferior talents, so what makes them qualified to tell him what to do? Young punks, meanwhile, on the team probably all defer to him. The only man in the dressing room who, I would imagine, matches him ego for ego is Saku Koivu...which may in turn explain the supposed friction between them. Now Gainey? Cups galore as both player and manager. And a player who was revered in Kovalev's Russia growing up. Plus he is so clearly a man of iron will and deep understanding of the game. Kovy would respect all that. Kovy's basic problem is that he's a one-man band in a team sport. That it takes GM Gainey to get his attention would seem to be consistent with that. Psycing
I think it was fitting that Kovy looked so thinned out today - he's been put through the wringer this past week (deservingly so) and I think it really got to him - deep down there in the mind that is Kovy, it hit. Anyway, we'll find out very soon whether or not he's here to play.

sbhatt
I wouldn't have recognized him in that picture. He needs to hit a tanning salon ASAP...looks downright pasty there.
Prime Minister Koivu
The talk of Kovalev withdrawing socially is a huge thing. He can't survive if he is all by himself. Everyone has struggles and friends make all the difference in the world when dealing with them. I like what he had to say and I really hope it wasn't just lip service. You don't need the "C" the lead. Go and destroy those sens today.

You don't need the "C" the lead. Go and destroy those sens today. A lot of people are like Kovalev, withdrawn and keep all emotions to themselves, make few friends and share little of their problems with anyone. It is the responsibility of the leader/manager/ to identify these traits and to reach out to help. It appears Bob Gainey did just that by reaching out to Kovalev and making him sit out of the game for a couple of days. He not only sent him home but apparently reached out to the player to talk and listen to him. Probably talked first and then listened to his player. That is what a good Manager does. On the other hand Fans shoot from the hip and criticize and sometimes w/o foundation and that is Ok because that is what fans do.
habs rule
judging from the news conference, I seriously doubt that Kovy will be traded, Bob likes him and feels he knows how to get the most out of him. Last year was a result of Bob talking to him in the off season. So maybe Kovy can be salvaged we shall see. I certainly hope so.

sbhatt
umm... kovy 2 pts in 5 minutes? i think he should sit out every 3rd game lol Every third game would be overdoing it, but as a player gets up there in age, I think scheduling little breaks at regular intervals throughout the season is a very good idea. saskhab
Bob pointed out that Kovy was front and centre at the All-Star Game and missed that break. This little time off is equivelant to the All-Star break.

From what I can see, Kovy and Gainey have got a strong relationship. Kovalev seems to truly respect the guy. In Gainey's press conference, he mentioned that about a week ago, Kovalev called him up to ask what he thought about his game, what he could improve upon, etc. I can't see him asking that stuff to Carbonneau or Saku. I agree that Kovalev's probably a loner. Sergei said in his interview that he and his brother rarely hung out with him because he was usually with his family. But what can we do if he doesn't make friends with Koivu, Hammer and Markov? He just needs to find a role as a mentor for the younger players. habs rule
and we should sign him just not for 4.5 million. his salary needs to decrease now to around 3 million per year for 2 years imo

HABBER-oooooKNOWS
A few days ago I wanted him traded. Now I love him. A year and a half ago, I wanted him traded, now I want him resigned. Man , Kovalev drives me crazy. If Gainey is the only one who can motivate this guy then he should intervene more often. Kovy loves Montreal that in itself is a reason to sign him, but I hope Gainey does a deal that is loaded with incentives. You know, base salary 2.5-3 million but can climb to 4.5. Not that any of it would help, this is a contract season for him and motivation has been a problem. I just can't watch the russian bear hibernate much anymore. With all that said, Gainey will overpay him next year and we'll have another two seasons of this crap to look forward to. YAY!
Chris
There is NO CHANCE BG resigns him. He has 14 freakin goals this year. All the drama, all the no shows. I wouldn't be surprised if he is moved by the deadline. The habs still need 13 wins to get in the playoffs, looking at the schedule i'm not sure where they are going to get them. They can't keep giving up 40-50 shots a night to bottom feeders. 1 good game in 6 weeks and everyone is jumping up and down, I just don't get it? they played just as well without him. They also scored 7 without him in 2 games, that's better then the last 6 weeks. I love the Canadiens too, should BG sign me? There are plenty of better options over the offseason then Kovy, they need a couple of centers, not a 15 goal scoring winger.

I'm not jumping up and down,I'm just saying it wouldn't surprise me if Gainey resigns him because he will be Plan C and the best player available to us this summer. It wouldn't be any different then all summers since the lock-out. Once again our August threads will be based on " I wonder which Kovy will show up this year" Nobody wants to play in Montreal so we will once again be signing guys left behind. Kovalev will be considered whether you like it or not.

With a massive recession and the cap certain to go down in 2010, these guys will be looking at job security. Just like you or I. I will be surprised if you see ridiculous numbers this year for players. I hope I am wrong.
Chris
There is always Gm who will over pay for a player they want or think they need. Look at Redden, Gomez and Drury, you think Sather is rethinking that one. I can't beleive how high and long those contracts are. Look at Briere, that contract is going to choke off thew flyers shortly, how much do you pay Carter, Richards, Gagne? Gm's who can control themselves will be much better in the long run, I am glad Bg was outbid for a couple of those guys. I would pay 7 mill for Boumeester though. BCHabnut
I would pay 7 mill for Boumeester though. There is no way Boumeester is a 7 million dollar man. If he is, I can guarentee that BG won't pay it. Develop PK Subaan and get Emelin on the roster. Try to sign the Schnide. That's what I would do. Chris
Exactly, look at itlike addition by subtraction. Brisby, Begin, Dandy, Bouillon is close to 6 million right there. Jbo is way better then those guys. If you sign Jobo your D end immediately becomes significantly better. Emelin, Weber are cheap and would add something to the roster this current D core does not have. Speed.
