Well Conolly is out there, there are several centers out there, plus BG could still go after Jokenen.

I disagree about Kovalev, all he brings is problems, he was basically benched for several weeks GC first year. Great second year, Nothing this year and was sent home. I would rather take a chance on Gaborik, atleast he produces when healthy.

Koivu, i just don't know what he brings anymore, i like him but i think as a player he is done. He has been the least successfull habs captain all time i beleive. I know it's not all on him but he doesn't make the team better with his leadership qualities. maybe i'm wrong but i call them as i see them.

Connolly is the guy I want the most but I don't think he's going to want to leave Buffalo. I think if we decide to let both Koivu and Kovalev go we have to make sure we have another player (it should be a C) coming in through a trade. Otherwise, it's like selling your house before you've bought a new one. For me, the ideal situation, is bring Tanguay and Kovalev back, Koivu walks of his own (and our) accord, and we manage to sign Connolly.

Faceoffs specialist, that's pretty much is main use right now. Otherwise, yeah, not a lot to look for. Hopefully he raises his game in the playoffs like he usually does.

Can't be worse than Mike Keane... :P

There is nothing stopping Gainey from engaging in contract negotiations with the key UFAs right now, except Gainey himself.

He has last year and most of this year as stats for the discussion. He knows who he wants. Engaging in the discussion will tell him who he won't be getting (either they want way too much, or tell him they plan on going UFA).

So even if he doesn't sign some of them, he may know that he won't be retaining the guy and therefore, he can trade him at the deadline.

This is why most GMs are having discussions with key guys right now and in many cases signing extension. Gainey has to get over this self imposed rule around negotiating mid year. If you are going to do that, then you are forced to choose between signing early at the risk of over paying, or leaving it too late and getting nothing.

So while some sign his praises for waiting, don't be upset if he loses many of these guys and ends up paying even more to entice replacement players in the summer. Why do you think Hammer is so over paid? Clearly, we need to keep quality players by signing extensions and get quality guys via trades. Signing top prospects during the summer hasn't worked in years and we end up over paying for 2nd tier UFAs.

There is no way I believe Gainey hasn't at least started talking with the guys agents he wants to keep. I'm not sure who he has opened conversations with but I know for a fact he has told all parties involved "not a word outside these doors"

The only proof I have of this is during the whole Vinny episode. He told the media straight up "We don't talk about who's involved in trade rumors because then the players don't know " He's a straight shooter and I think most people involved understand and respect that.

See what I'm getting at here? At least Komi and respect to Koivu he has to have started some talk. Gainey isn't a fool right?

Gainey also said he doesn't negotiate during the season, so I take him at his work. WRT Vinney, he never said he wasn't in any trade talks, just that he won't say a word about it. :)

I hope you are right, but if so, I would have expected to see some extensions signed by now. The trade deadline is tomorrow. :(
