Latendresse: "When you spend the summer in Quebec...

Like Lapierre, Latendresse spoke out after Saturday's game.

http://www.cyberpresse.ca/sports/hockey/20...t-etre-long.php

Summary...

- I've been in teams that lost their means because they didnt have any (talent) but with all the talent we have, it's a tough (situation) to accept.

- [if there's players that quit] I dont know, I'm not in their minds, but if I found out I'd go smack them 2-3 times across the ears

- We've got to wake up and go get points, otherwise the summer will be long. When you spend the summer in Quebec, you know what it is to not make the playoffs. There's players that dont realizes it because they dont stay here all summer long. But I experienced it after my first season. Everywhere I went, people stopped me to ask me what happened. It's a situation I dont want to relive.

- When you hear boos, it's humiliating. You want to hide under the bench until your shift comes up. But fact remains that we still have the best fans. People who dont have big salaries but who'll spend on tickets to make a gift for their kids. To lose like we did against the Leafs is unacceptable...

There. Finally the kiddos are starting to speak out and rock the boat. Hope it's not too little too late.

I want a 100% montreal resident club.

Condition for a contract is that you cut all ties with your native place or you have them all move here. :P

Unfortunatley it looks like just the beginning. If this team doesn't turn this thing around with 10 games left to go, and make the playoffs and make some noise. This whole orginization could fall apart.

You have a team that has completely collapsed. Its gone from winning the eastern confrence last year, to collapsing from 4th in Confrence to being humiliated by last place teams like the Islanders and Atlanta. And this isn't the first time this has happened. The have had massive collaspes in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

You have a guy who fired his best friend as coach, a few months after saying he was the best move he every made as a GM. THis after just giving him a new 3 year deal.

You have a team that is now up for sale in their landmarked 100th year, who are suppose to be cup contenders. You have the horrible Montreal media who beat up on everybody, and wonder aloud why this team doesn't draft or sign more French Canadian talent.

You have a management team that will only hire a French Canadian coach, instead of the best person for the job. The GM has been reported to be walking away from the team in the summer time. You've got young guys partying with mobsters and not showing up prepared to play.

The worst tax situation in the league.

What does this lead to?

1) UFA walking away from a shitty situation....Higgins, Komisarek, Kovalev, Koivu, Tanguay etc.

2) UFA not wanting to walk into a shit storm like the one going on here

3) This team continuing its decent into mediocrity, which could rival the Houle era...

Too late? I may just be the sad beginning to and even longer hell to come....but there are still 10 games to play

Yes. And, assuming that Gainey is still GM, I can't wait to hear all the anger and resentment spewed his way when he "fails" to re-sign UFAs or when he "fails" to attract new ones. I think we have a chance of keeping Komisarek and other UFAs who may well have a sense of loyalty to the city/team, friends on the club, etc.. But what 'external' UFA in his right mind will sign with a team that

1. has returned to the mediocrity that defined its past decade after one scintillating season

2. has all sorts of rumoured problems in the dressing room (to say the least)

3. has a school of media sharks relentlessly feeding on the chum of players' problems

4. is reportedly on the market, with no more stability at the ownership level

5. has shown cracks at the management level, with that a*sehole Boivin spouting off and rumours of Gainey having been pushed into firing Carbo

6. may not even have a coach (other than the GM) by July 1

7. has no obvious, elite-level 'rising young stars' and only declining veterans who are themselves UFAs

8. plays in a province with a different culture that scares their wives and ignorant family members

9. plays in a province with very high tax rates

UFAs will stay away in droves. But all the blame will fall to Bob, even though he is only responsible for #6. You heard it here first.

That's why the non-stop suckage of our young players this season has driven me crazy. They don't seem to understand the long-term damage they're doing to the entire rebuilding program of which they're a part. The only way Montreal will attract UFAs is if the franchise is perceived as a winner. But nah, it's more important to party, hang out with mobsters, fail to be prepared to pay the price night after night, and then slip into a catastrophic team slump that corrodes their confidence and undercuts the entire organization. I can't think about it any more, it's too damned frustrating.

Hey CC, who would complain if none of the UFA's are unsigned? They suck.

If BG can't improve the lineup is when he'll feel the heat. Some UFA's want the money, some want a particular orginization, others want to win. The Habs have plenty of money.

Everyone should calm down a little if Gillette sells the team, it's a business decision, times are tough, if he feels he needs to sell he will, someone else will take over.

I think Kovalev and Koivu should be allowed to walk, unless they are prepared to accept very substantial pay cuts and reduced roles. Koivu in particular is now, in my mind, a face-off and PP specialist, not a legitimate top-6 forward 5-on-5. But letting Komisarek go is just crazy.

Yea, but i don't understand why people want crappy players at a discount? They are still crappy players. I would rather be done with them know matter what the price is.

If Komi's spot can be upgraded, i say do it. He had 1 good year. This year has been awful.

If BG resigns either of Koivu/Kovy for anything longer than 2yrs and anything north of 3M/per yr than he is trying to grasp at something that just isn't there. I don't think that will happen, but if it does it will definitely make me question his ability as GM a whole lot more.

15 seasons and a grand total of 3-4 round two wins says this team needs a new direction and it isn't gonna come from either of those two.

I agree. Koivu isn't worth more than 2.5 million. I wouldn't give Kovalev more than 3...maybe 3.5 million$.

The good thing about Komisarek's bad play over the past 2 months is that his "value" has decreased. I remember last year when people were saying that he could be worth up to 6 million$ per year. As much as i love(in a non-gay way! ;);) ) my boy, I don't think Mike is worth more than 4 million$ per year!

I disagree. his progresson has been constant every year except for this one. Up until this year, Komi has gotten better and better. This year, it is clear that he's still playing with an injury(probably a shoulder injury) which would explain why he isn,t hitting as much! Nice to see him have a good game last night against the Thrashers!

As far as Guillaume's comments are concerned, I agree with the Kid. Somebody who lives in Montreal (or the province of Québec) during the summer months, will definitely want to make the playoffs, and play well. They have to fae the fans and the media whereas the others who leave...

Agreed. Komo is still up there in shots blocked even if the hits have dwindled. You can't let a D so big, competitive and relatively young walk.

Not to mention we had been looking for a big stay at home d-man since Craig Ludwig. Now that we have him, people want to let him walk?? I don't think so!

I think it's more accurate to say some of us would like an upgrade to the defense. If Boumeester or others are available to upgrade the D, then the salary Komi is expecting shouldn't be given to someone who had such a bad year. I would rather pay 8 for Boumeester then 4 on Komi.

I like Komi, but he certainly hasn't earned a contract more then 2.5 or 3 mill.

All you thik about is the points and the offensive upside to Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester doesn't block shots, and doesn't hit like Komi does!

I'm not saying that Komi is worth as much as Bouwmeester, but he's worth more than 2.5 million$

I don't know, actually i was thinking less about Boumeesters offense and more about his defense. He's not as physical as Komi, but he does take the body, he skates like the wind (habs D is incredibly slow footed) and can single handedly get the puck out (normally it takes the habs an entire shift to get the puck out), his speed allows him to cover any mistakes. He plays in all situations. His offense and passing is just a bonus.

I think he is pretty close to Komi's size as well.

Latendresse:

"When you spend the summer in Quebec..."

"You enjoy the Quebecois women."

I bet that's what he really meant. Or maybe he was going somewhere else with it, like:

"You wish your boss gave you a raise so you could buy a second home in San Diego."

Maybe he was just being silly:

"You come to love black fly season."

Haha, I'd never seen flies like those before. On a vacation in Canada as a kid I got into the shower one day and found myself bleeding out of my naval, thought I was dying, haha. Apparently had been bitten by one and forgot about it.

True fun is when you have black flies and mosquitoes at the same time, fighting over your blood. Toss in a tick humping your ankle to give you lyme disease and you got yourself a classic Ontario camping trip....
