dlbalr
Wow, what an opener for the Jays. The longest opening day game in MLB history (16 innings) that sees them score 3 in the 9th to force extras and then a 3 run homer in the 16th after a failed attempt to bunt. It also saw Toronto's bullpen throw 11 shutout innings (with an ugly 8 walks to boot), a 5-infielder formation, and a bench clearing episode in the 15th. That was fun to watch. There is a lot of hype around the Jays with their young stars coming on and as usual nothing else going on in town. This spectacle usually lasts for a month or so until they hit the reality of a 162 game schedule. The Jays have done a good job for the most part spinning their lack of success in the off season. We all hope for a successful year, but if the wheels start coming off, expect AA to receive some arrows.
Zowpeb
They would look so good with Darvish and Fielder...would have made them contenders without giving up their highly rated farm. They'd be well positioned for the next 3-5 years with the youth to deal for other upgrades or trade other assets to make room as needed. AA should have made huge pushes for those 2 additions. Even overpaying would have left them with a relatively manageable payroll of around $115m...good for around 10th highest in the league... We'd probably be talking about them as contenders for the next 3-5 years.

dlbalr
Baltimore beat Boston in 17 innings today. Why am I mentioning this? The winning pitcher for the O's was their 1st baseman who was DH'ing to start the game, he threw 2 shutout innings. As for the losing pitcher? The backup left fielder who served as a pinch runner and the DH before allowing 3 runs in his lone inning. Both teams went through all 7 relievers. BlueKross
Maybe we should be cobbling together a list of players we could move at the deadline. As much as as I loath having to endure yet another losing season, maybe this is a blessing in disguise, were we unload some fringe players for top dollar. The Jays will try to spin it that it is only May, and there are a lot of games left but they are clearly heading in the wrong direction. dlbalr
MLB shrunk their draft by 10 rounds for this year but perhaps they need to go further. The Padres drafted an NCAA quarterback who hasn't played baseball in years. I think we could stand to have a few more rounds taken if that's the gambles that are being taken in the 40th.
BlueKross
Teams are allowed to bring in undrafted picks to fill in roster needs, so I don't think rounds 40 to 50 are really a big issue.
dlbalr
If anyone has any Toronto starting pitchers in their pools, get rid of them now; they're cursed. Over the past two weeks, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th starters have all gone down with injuries. I've never seen this before.
BlueKross
The Blue Jays will be a seller at the deadline, something AA knew from the onset. My problem is that he has already stated that he will be looking for Big League talent that is ready to go. This is the same as last year. The desperate teams that are in the hunt and will pay top dollar, don't want to give up talent. They are looking to add talent so by looking for ready to go talent you are eliminating this group. You could however get high end prospects which makes a lot more sense to me. The other group that have no chance to make the playoffs will be dumping salary but will want top dollar. I expect this will stem the tide until AA can get something done. God help him if he can't get anything done in the next two weeks.
Commandant
Extending Encarnacion is actually a huge move that says this team isn't taking steps backwards. i don't see them getting the wild card this year, and I wouldn't trade top notch prospects for short term help. But a guy like Edwin who can provide power for a few years should be kept around. Next you have to decide on Kelly Johnson, is he resigned or not... and I don't have a problem trading anyone who wont be a Jay next year. I know they are close, but Its too hard to win with Romero pitching below what he's capable of this year, and 3 other starters done for the season. BlueKross
Signing Encarnation just puts a stop to teams wanting him on the cheap. Here's how we value him, now if you want him, start talking turkey. I agree you can move out parts that will not be along in future. I disagree with AA what we should be what are you looking for in return. I think he is paying high and drastically downsizing his market going for ready to go guys.

SP - Esteban Loiza C: Damian Miller 1b: Orlando Merced 2b: Joey Cora SS: Royce Clayton 3b: Ed Sprague LF: BJ Surhoff CF: Lance Johnson RF: Matt Lawton hahaha
dlbalr
There has been quite a bit of action today as we head toward next week's non-waiver trade deadline. Ichiro is off to the Yankees, Anibal Sanchez is going to the Tigers (who are looking primed to do some real damage the rest of the way) while Ryan Dempster appears to be off to the Braves, pending him waiving his '10-and-5' rights. Both Dempster and Sanchez will/have fetch(ed) some serious young talent in the trade, a sign that the top pitchers will be yielding premium returns. Perhaps going after the depth guys may be the better way to go for Toronto.

We don't need depth guys. We need front end guys. We don't even have a #1 starter. Romero has been at best a number two and right now is suspect in the rotation at all. For crying out loud AA, take stock of where you are at or we will be doing the same thing for years to come.

As you said, they're not going anywhere so there's no point in adding a big pitcher unless they have a few years of control left (and I don't think those players are available right now). The reason for adding depth is simply to take some pressure off the young arms. Alvarez needs more time in the minors but they can't really send him down as there isn't anyone worth calling up. Get a depth guy who can pitch as a #5 this year, maybe be a long guy next season. It won't help them win any this year but if it keeps some of the young arms in the lower levels to better develop, it's still worth doing and the cost to get a 'plug' won't sacrifice the future either. When things open up again in the offseason, then take your cracks at the higher end pitchers.

My concern is wasting too many assets on plugs I would prefer they disregard this season and put there assets into subsequent seasons. dlbalr
It was a pretty busy trade deadline, a few big names went. The Phillies blew up their outfield by dealing Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino and Ryan Dempster found his way to Texas (which isn't where he originally wanted to go). The Jays got a pair of relievers for Travis Snider and Eric Thames, I don't mind either of those deals. The bullpen now has some above average arms and some stability moving into next year, that's nice to see.

You had to know that Snider would be moved before he got too good and they couldn't move him. It remains to be see if they got good value. You can expect Arencibia to be gone at their earliest convience. Does any one know where Jerolmen (not the correct spelling) went in the catcher mix? Seems to me Mathis couldn't be at a higher value, if they had enough healthy bodies at catcher for the last trade deadline.

I'm not sure if he's still in the system; I assume he's not as the AAA catching situation, to put it bluntly, is beyond dire (3 catchers on the DL at AAA alone). Heck, at a lower level a first baseman was converted to catcher to help out in the short term.
