Tonight on RDS its exciting action from the Finnish SM-Liga! Saku Koivu and Craig Rivet's TPS team take on the Espoo Blues led by Mike Ribeiro. Ribeiro vs Koivu! One night only on RDS! Who will come out on top? Is the rivalry between #11 and #71 really as big as the media plays it up to be? (probably not) ... lol... Tune it anyways.

Predictions anyone? ;)

My prediction: I'm probably going to be bored by the game since I have no attachment to either team, and a very limited knowledge of the teams/league (I also heard that TPS plays a boring style).... ah what the hell, I'll say 4-3 TPS victory.

I think the game is over by now... so if you dont want to find out the score before the RDS telecast then dont open the links to the Espoo/TSP websites.

I'm not even sure if I am going to be able to watch the game tonight... oh well, not a big loss really.

Go Guys Go!

so,

ummm,

how is/was the game? It's hard enough following Habs from out here, but Finnish teams, well...

Go Guys Go!

(checked the links and won't offer any major spoiler info of a game of this stature, but Koivu and Ribs both got points. And sheesh, think they could possibly fit any more corporate advertising patches on those Euro jerseys?)

The 1st period has been alright so far. Rivet nearly scored with a bullet point shot early on. The pace has been good, but the play is sloppy... Rivet has taken 2 penalties.

Koivu and Ribeiro are taking advantage of the big ice surface, but they have no points as of yet.

Smaller guys do like the big ice.

(Maybe the CHL, er, the "KHL" (see my other post today) could have somewhat bigger ice, between the NHL and the international size.)

puck, I catch a game here once in a while. The skills are poor, but with the big ice there is more speed, the trap doesn't work so well. Which ice size do you prefer?

Definitely the small ice. The games are more intense since the players have less room on the ice. Plus I beleive its easier to apply the trap on big ice then on small ice.

The NHL should experiment without the red-line for a few exhibition games, it might open up the game.

Well, you know more about the game than I do.

I thought for sure the big ice made for a faster game, the point about intensity is a good one, it is for sure more physical when there is less room, if that is what you mean. I would vote for something between th eNHL and the Int sizes, simply because the players have got bigger since the early days when th eice size was set, and more equipment as well.

On big ice the players have much more room to skate, but the game is not always faster. Think about it this way are you going to get from behind the net to the other side of the rink faster on international ice or NHL ice? NHL ice for sure. The reason the NHL game has slowed down is because of interference, clutching and grabbing. On the frontpage of HW their is a great quote from Beliveau that sums it up...

Want proof that hockey can be exciting and fast on NHL ice? Just watch any game from the 1980's ...

Coaching has improved alot since then (I hate calling it an "improvment") , now players are taught to clutch and grab to defend against opponents.

As for the equipment... Goalie equipment needs to shrink before they even get to the rest of the team. Some of these goalies look like blimps.

The fact goalies didn't wear masks until the 70s shows how the game has changed, it is all brute force now. I completely agree about the clutch and grab, that's why i favor a bigger ice surface so players have a way round that crap. Also, think there's any chance the players could be made to keep the sticks below the waist, those are friggin weapons they are wielding. Beliveau was a gentleman, hockey was a gentleman's game (oops, that's a bit sentimental, I forgot about th elikes of Ferguson and Shack)

Anyway, did the Finnish game finish? Did you enjoy it?
