I just don't see the funny part. You're right. If it were Brodeur who let in the soft goal and a Swede were doing the taunting, a lot of Canadian hockey fans would have been upset. And Don Cherry's head would have exploded after doing his usual discriminatory rant about Swedish hockey players. (I'm Canadian, btw.)
