What I’m hearing about why Winnipeg Jets top prospect Rutger McGroarty is in trade talks - The Athletic (nytimes.com)

"The Winnipeg Jets’ 2022 first-round pick, Rutger McGroarty, is likely to be traded, a league source told The Athletic on Saturday.

This confirms and adds to Elliotte Friedman’s report on the 32 Thoughts podcast that McGroarty’s name “has come up in trade discussions” and that “the Jets have discussed trading and other teams have discussed acquiring McGroarty’s rights.

That's interesting, know any teams looking for a good young forward prospect?  LOL

I read Commandant's scouting report on him from a couple years ago, sounds like the only thing he needs to work on is his skating. Is Winnipeg's pick back, plus Harris plus a 2nd too much or too little?  Commandant can certainly comment much better on where McGroaty stands now. Great name though!

I don't know what Winnipeg wants, and the skating has improved.  He's never going to be Paul Byron, but he's able to keep up with the play.  Its Winnipeg's top prospect and Winnipeg feels they are close to a cup so I think they'd probably want proven talent for him.

That said I'd do Winnipeg's pick, Harris, and the Colorado pick for him, assuming he'd sign with us and wouldn't be facing the same issue Winnipeg is with him not willing to sign.

Remind me what the Colorado pick is?

You would think signing with Montreal wouldn't be a problem given that the Habs need top 6 forwards, plus the comfort level in having other US college kids with the Habs (Hutson, Caulfield, Harris, Struble). Plus he can see the Habs were willing to give these kids a chance late in the year which also burned a year of their entry level contract I believe so they weren't being cheap.

It seems to me that McGroaty is the kind of young player Hughes is looking for, just turned 20 years old, mature enough after a couple years in college and ready to go to the next level. Plus he will be on an ELC for 3 years I believe. I am sure Hughes is making inquiries.

Inquiries of course.

And those things are helpful, but there are issues too and we dont know why he wont go to winnipeg.  If its canadian taxes, or a desire to play in a warm climate, or a specific team he wants, then we may not be able to overcome it.  Thats where they need to know he will sign.

From what I've read apparently Winnipeg wanted to sign him in April but would not "promise a path to playing time" ... unlike his Michigan teammates Frank Nazar  (Chicago) and Gavin Brindley (Columbus) who were signed and played NHL games, burning a year of their ELC ... neither were the Jets ready to guarantee him an NHL roster spot next season ... if HuGo feel McGroarty is worth it, a roster sport is something they can easily promise as they are still in mid-rebuild.

I am sure Hughes has a really good idea of what McGroaty could bring as he is well connected to US college hockey. However I am guessing there will be multiple teams interested so McGroaty won't come cheap nor should he as he is a highly touted prospect.

I hope he is taking about us

The media does a great job keeping us interested by hyping a lot of stuff. However this year there may be a lot of movement partly because after Celebrini there is such a divergence of opinions so I think that we might see more trading up and down but who knows.

Yeah a lot of the past month has been hype around rumours and the draft.

I do consider Friedman to be a straight shooter, meaning he doesn’t post bull crap.

There are a few teams that could do something big including the Habs and hopefully we see something soon.

I dont think freidman is talking about drafting players.  We have already seen big trades and free agency is Monday.

The cap went up significantly for the first time since the pandemic.  This is removing shackles on teams and will encourage more roster movement than weve seen in 4 or 5 years

Good point, the cap going up will certainly give a lot more flexibility to teams. It should be an interesting week.

Other than McGroarty any other rumors with our dmen?

I'm guessing we see a move July 2nd after some free agent dmen are off the board?

I’ve seen nothing other than McGroarty and that was close to happening at the draft but obviously didn’t.
