Dominic Moore in Montreal

If we trade a 2nd rounder (not this draft, next draft) for Moore, Gauthier is crucified. What if he would have traded Metropolit or Lapierre for an equivalent pick? He'd still be crucified. What if he did nothing? He'd be crucified.

Firstly, while there are some gems to be found in the 2nd round, I think we shouldn't blow this out of proportion. A 2nd rounder which is a year and a half away from being used, means we'll have plenty of time to trade for a similar pick to replace it.

Second, from the limited times I've seen Moore play, and the bits of information I have about him during his time with the leafs, I do believe he isn't a player who is paid to score points, as much as he is to be a hard working, experienced vet. Depth is very important, expecially come the playoffs, and we can certainly use a guy of his caliber as a centerman in our bottom 6 forwards.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's the best trade, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone is making it out to be. If there is indeed another trade coming, it likely means we're giving up more roster players than we're receiving, and Gauthier was not alright with giving the AHLers a bigger role than they currently have. Let's see what happens.

I agree that we should wait and see how it all pans out. What I disagree with is the cavalier attitude to 2nd round picks. At face value, Gauthier is trading a high pick for 'depth for the playoffs.' Given that this team has ZERO chance of winning the Cup this season, he should, if anything, be making deals in the OPPOSITE direction. Especially after last season's orgy of trading away draft picks. There was some logic for doing that last year, but not this year.

At it stands now, Gauthier is a boob in my books. It's up to him to prove otherwise with his subsequent move(s).

Meanwhile, the Bruins are on fire now since beating the Habs... sigh...

What does it say when our director of scouting doesn't think he can find a guy in the 2nd round work 2 months of Dominic Moore's time????

Technically, Gauthier is director of pro scouting, Timmins is director of amateur scouting. Also note that the pick isn't this year's, but 2011. It's a little early to forecast the 2nd round next season but perhaps it's a weak draft? (Simply speculation...)

Not even a week into the job and you're already calling him a boob for a minor trade?

I'd buy a mirror my friend.

OK, I'm venting a bit. But trading away a second round pick for a depth player on a team with zero chance of winning this year is the work of a boob. I watched Houle all those years, I know what a boob general manager looks like.

Now, I did say that I'd wait and see. If there's more on the way that is sufficiently positive to override the cloddishness of throwing away significant draft picks on a team that needs young players, then he's not a boob. But hey, if the first thing someone does the first time you meet him is stupid, you probably form a tentative conclusion that that person is stupid. Gauthier's first move is, prima facie, stupid. So I form a tentative opinion that he's stupid. Seems fair to me.

Ha, for once everyone on this board agrees...

My first reaction upon hearing this was, "What the f--- for?" Seems like everyone feels the same way.

There'd better be something else in the works because I'm getting a very Houle-like feel about this trade...

Moore = or < Metropolit.

Metropolit is old.

Moore is young.

Both are UFA's at season's end.

Metropolit is having a relatively good year. Relatively good years = moar moneyz

Moore is having a relatively crappy year. Relatively crappy years = less moneyz

Who do ya keep at season's end?

LOL reading this thread sounds like we just traded Cammalleri and Price for a bag of pucks. Chill out people, let's at least wait until Gauthier's done dealing to assess the damage. I for one am reserving my judgement, Moore is not a bad pickup for a team that has been icing an entire line of rookies out of necessity rather than choice. I understand the cap implications, but obviously Gauthier is not done. I'll be far more worried if the Frolov rumors come true......

I can't judge Gauthier too much yet. If there is another trade it might make this one make sense. Also, you can't crucify a GM for trading a pick that is too high unless you give him the benefit of the doubt to recover that pick before the 2011 draft. It's the same for Burke in the Kessel deal. If he can acquire a 2nd rounder this year and get another 1st in 2011 then Kessel doesn't all of a sudden look so bad after all. Gauthier has 16 months to recover the pick.

However, he'd better recover it! We're already down a 2nd and 4th rounder in the draft this year - I think

Didn't Gainey said earlier this year that we shouldn't expect much for Halak considering the Habs only got a 2nd rounder for Huet? Maybe Gauthier is raising the value of draft picks ? If we had to give a 2nd for Moore, what could we get in return for Halak now?

No offence, but that's some pretty desperate reasoning...the rest of the league is far more likely just to look at that and go, 'wow, this Gauthier guy is a bozo.' You'll notice that when Houle traded away a superstar goalie and Mike Keane for a second-line forward, a backup, and jockstrap, that didn't suddenly increase the trade value of the latter items around the league.

One good thing here is that Moore is a very good faceoff man, with a 56%, according to the 'Did You Know' blurb on the Habsworld front page. Still a ludicrous deal, but that'll help.

Halak's value is probably lower than it should be. Biron, Turco, Roloson and Josh Harding are also available and they offer other trade options for GM's besides only Halak. Considering the fact that we could get more waiting for the draft or the compensation in draft picks for an offer sheet it makes sense to keep Halak.

Even Philly seems to be content with Emery ATM.

Who fits anyway?

What I don't get is if this a precurser to another trade, why woudn't you make the main trade first. WHo else is going to offer a 2nd rounder for 3rd line UFA??? I could understand it if the habs were a cup favourite and needed depth as center to fill the last holes. BUt this team is playoff roadkill - if they get in! Unless they play Ottawa or Buffalo - I can't see them winning a round. And i'm even being generous about Ottawa, who I believe are over acheiving right now.

The talk is that a second rounder is probably what the leafs will get for Pornikowsky or whatever his name is and he is a big scoring winger.

Thought it over.....

ANd now I believe the reason for the Moore trade is not for later trade reasons... main reason is to reinforce the shut down line and/or fourth lines It makes no sense that we have to over tax our top centreman (Pleks) with double defensive duties.... in other words.. AS it may be part of his game to shut down Ovys and Kovys and Semins... we cannot have him killing back to back PKs without burning him out for playoffs... (dont forget Plek is not going to rest this Olympics)

So even if we do a trade in the upcoming days/weeks... today's trade is for keeps... (until next season that is)

Can't understand this trade either, unless there is a follow up trade involving somebody like Metropolit. I would not like Lapierre to go, so I hope he is not involved. I also believe that a 2nd round draft pick is a high price for a journeyman like Moore. Let's hope that we will get a better picture of Gauthier's strategy in the next 24 hours.

Anyhow, I hope that the team won't be disturbed by what's going on behind closed doors during the week-end. It could be disastrous. Martin has a big job to do to keep his team focused. Hell! as much as I am glad to see P.K. called up (and probably playing), I don't feel that the timing is very good. Let's cross our fingers; the season might be played in the next two games.

Not unhappy with the trade at all, really. I expect Moore will be a bit keen to sign a contract considering how long it took him to get a job last summer, and his not great year so far.

I fully believe this to be a precursor though. More moves to be made, no doubt.

I can't get rid of this sick feeling that Gauthier is going to sink us even further. I hated the signing, but two things he said kept a flicker of hope that he wouldn't be another Houle - Stating he wanted to resign Pleks and keep both goalies and they had been negotiating with Pleks.

To me that meant that Gomez and/or Hamrlik would be moved - becuase that is really the only way they could afford to keep Pleks. Then Pleks in an interview states that they only had one conversation with the team and no numbers or anything specific was discussed. Reading that got me worried this morning.

Then a dumb move like this.

Moore is fast, fiesty, and one of the better faceoff men in the league. He's a quality bottom six forward. I also don't think Metropolit is a goner... I think he'll be the 4th line centre, with Lapierre moving to wing full time. Lapierre was the team's worst faceoff man, and quite frankly his agitating skills are better suited for the wing where he can be more aggressive on the forecheck.

When fully healthy:

Cammalleri - Plekanec - A. Kostitsyn

Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta

Moen - Moore - S. Kostitsyn

Lapierre - Metropolit - D'agostini/Pyatt/Bergeron/Darche

Pyatt likely in the minors, I guess. We'll see if D'Agostini survives past Mar. 3. Probably the last spot is between Bergeron and Darche. Actually, I like the looks of a Darche - Moore - S. Kostitsyn line... good two way ability all around. Then put Moen - Metropolit - Lapierre as the energy line.

I can understand people thinking we shouldn't be dealing picks away. As for people being offended by it being a 2nd rounder, 2011 is supposedly a weaker year, and we'll likely get a 2nd rounder back when we trade a goalie in the summer.

The cap situation for next year is the thing that bugs me the most, but there are ways to reduce that.

I too am having horrifying Houle flashbacks. We just have to hold on and hope that this isn't the sign of things to come, that there's a solid plan. Don't panic YET even though, as far as we can see, our new GM just made a move worthy of a dumbell. Hold on and hope...kinda like Leafs fans have been doing for 40 years :puke:

LMFAO @ the panic in this thread.

This is the 3rd time Moore is traded for a pick. 3rd, 2nd and 2nd rounders.

Moore is basically another Pyatt. Speedy energy 2-way guy who can play C and LW. Would be a much better fit centering Moen than Metro.

I hope it means Metropolit is gone. Face it, except on the PP, Metro is worthless. Can't skate anymore, can't check, can't win faceoffs regularly. He's a PP specialist who gets undeserved PP time because of injuries and Martin's man crush on him. I'd much rather give that PP time to some real offensive kid and save the roster spot for a true faceoff/checking C like Moore.

Also LMFAO @ whoever said to keep Metro over Lapierre. Yeah, that makes tons of sense. Keep the small 35 yrs old guy who cant skate anymore over the sizeable 24 yrs old guy with potential.

The panic is natural. Gauthier is an unknown commodity, we've endured two traumatic seasons preceded by about 15 crushingly awful ones, and his first is a head-scratcher like this: a 2nd rounder for a bottom-6 rental player. Reserve your LMFAO for GMs who cut deals like that, not the people who call it for what it is. HOWEVER I'll grant that in and of itself, the trade is no big deal. It's what it tells us about the GM's sagacity that's alarming.

I was being sarcastic.

I just don't understand the trade for 2 reasons:

- why do you trade for Moore when you have a guy like Pyatt that does the same thing and who just came out of an outstanding game on the 1st line no less. looks like a side way move to me

- why trade for a salary when all we try is have some cap space to improve our team

My LMFAO are rare so I dont waste them on undeserving targets!

Really, the whole panic and raising of the Rejean Houle scarecrows because of this? Dominic Moore for a 2nd rounder, which Buffalo also did a year ago? Gimme a break. Darcy Regier is a great GM. So if Gauthier pulls the same move, it should be a good sign!!!

There. Feel better now?
