Ruins @ Habs GDT - March 13th, 2010

No kidding! However, ye Habs are an interesting playoff match-up. There's some battle-tested veteran talent on our squad - Hammer, Spacek, Gomez, Gionta, Gill, Markov, Moore, Metropolit - and players with Cup-rings who have shown they can do it in the past (Gomez, Gionta, Gill). There's a game-breaker (Cammy) and some unpredictable X-factors (the Kostitysns, Pouliot, Plekanec). And we have the goaltending to potentially be awkward opponents. Obviously, we will be underdogs, but smart teams wouldn't take us too lightly. (Actually what we really are is the perfect first-round opponent for a Cup contender, potentially good enough to shake them up and wake them up, but beatable. If we do make it, I expect that it will be interesting than last season's rollover).

I like the way you say what I'm thinking all the time. I can devote my myself to other things.

On the Lapierre topic, how many games does Ovy get for his hit on Brian Campbell this afternoon? Looked like a carbon copy to me. Bet he gets away with no suspension.

If he doesn't get 4 games minimum the NHL just proves once again that their leadership is useless.

I agree with ya, but let's be honest here. This is Oechkin. If he gets more than 1 or 2 games, i'll be very surprised. He might get 3 games, but you can bet he won't get 4. Washingtons 4th game is agains the Pens, and the NHL would not want to miss out on another Crosby vs Ovechkin match-up!

I was at the game saturday, and I liked what i saw from our boys! I don't know if you guys could hear it on TV, but I was one of those drunken bastards screaming "TUUKKAA" all night long!! Trying to get him of his game...looks like it worked cause he sure did mess up on the 3rd goal!!

It's always nice to beat the Pooh-Bears!

If he gets 3, it essentially equals Lapierre's suspension. Ovechkin got a five minute major and a game misconduct, Lapierre got no penalty at all. Lapierre played the rest of the game, Ovechkin got kicked out of a game 10 minutes old that went to OT. I'd say that 3 games would be even.

Isn't a match penalty an automatic game suspension? I thought the only way out of that one is if the match penalty is repealed.

Ovy got a major penalty, not a match.

Revisiting the Moore trade. Two things. Once again I'll reiterate that Moore is likely a player that Gauthier covets so I expect him to be resigned and also Gauthier has 15 months to re-acquire the pick. Another way of looking at this is Gauthier has already restocked the pick by obtaining Palushaj who was drafted by St. Louis in the second round of the 2007 draft in exchange for the 6th rounder in D'Agostini.

He got both. He got a 5 minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. They had an article on the PuckDaddy blog on Yahoo pointing out that NHL rules mandate a suspension if a player gets game misconducts for the same penalty in a 41 game span. This happened to be the 42nd game since his last boarding ejection.

A match penalty is different than a game misconduct, no?

Game misconduct penalty

A player (whether a skater or goaltender) who receives a game misconduct penalty is ejected, and is sent to the team's dressing room. The player may be immediately substituted for on the ice; however, in practice, game misconduct penalties are normally assessed along with five minute major penalties and another player will serve this penalty first. Regardless of the time of the penalty, the player is charged with ten penalty minutes for statistical purposes, and this rule also applies to match penalties (see below).

Any player who is assessed three game misconduct penalties in an NHL season incurs a one-match suspension, and further discipline is possible for subsequent ejections. Salary lost as a result of a suspension is usually donated to a league-supported charity or program to assist retired players. A game misconduct penalty is imposed for more severe instances of major penalty infractions, earning three major penalties in a game, or getting out of the penalty box before the penalty time is served.

Match Penalty

A player who receives a match penalty is ejected. A match penalty is imposed for deliberately injuring or attempting to injure another player, verbal and/or physical abuse of officials and/or spectators, or for a goaltender going to the penalty box. Any player other than the goaltender must be chosen to go to the penalty box to serve a five minute major penalty, during which they may not be substituted for on the ice. If the goaltender receives a match penalty, another player serves the time so that the team may immediately insert a backup.

" In practice, an NHL match penalty and game misconduct are virtually identical in application. If a match penalty is imposed, however, the offending player is automatically suspended from the next game their team plays, and often face a hearing with the possibility of a lengthier ban."

Got that from the Wiki.

And since it was a boarding major and game misconduct called, I don't think the automatic suspension applies. There is no mention of a Match penalty on the scoresheet.

to this one, where a match penalty was called
