I'm not one to pout over lines, but JM's continued allegiance to that second line baffles me. Gomez's performance all season has been absolutely unacceptable - a disgrace to the uniform and an insult to both fans and teammates. And that of his linemates has scarcely been better. In contrast, both Desharnais and Pouliot have done everything one could ask of them. If you ask me, I would move at least Pouliot onto the second line (he did have chemistry with Gomez last season), or, preferably, give those minutes to DD and Pouliot. Maybe I'm overreacting, but I've had it with Kostitsyn's "Will I Ever Find Myself?" act and with Gomez's sheer incompetence. If either of the guys were rookies, they'd have been sent down by now. It's time to stop jerking around and demand performance: players who perform, get the minutes. Period.

No Gill it seems... So can we still fit another player from Hamilton or are we reaching max numbers?

Yep, Cammalleri is either on IR already or could be placed. Gorges/Markov are already there so even with the 2 DTD injuries, that's only 22 on the roster, room for 1 more.

I seem to recall you being a fan of what Gomez CAN bring to a game, as am I. So to describe Gomez as you have is excellent in my books. I'm no stats guy, but local radio pointed out his regular strength point totals. Absolutely disgraceful. And if I hear another "he brings it in the playoffs comment", well, I'll just laugh. He might as well give some of his money back.

Yep, I have long been a Gomez fan, back to his NJ days. I have a weakness for slick, smart playmakers, and his speed has always blew me away. I thought his performance last season was satisfactory (only a fool would expect him to be worth his insane salary). But this season, after being patient for a good long time, I've finally and drastically turned on him. He has been absolutely wretched - a massive liability in every facet of the game outside the neutral zone. One of the worst second-line C I've ever seen on a good team - and that's a pure hockey judgement that has nothing to do with the salary. Unless he redeems himself with an awesome playoff, we'd be better off replacing him with almost ANY second-line-calibre C (including, conceivably, Desharnais). There should be no place on our team for a useless passenger like that.

Huge game tonight, could it make or break the season, hmmm possibly, but that might be getting a little excited. After last week though, it does have a bit of a pivotal feel to it.

With all of the injuries, they have done well. Lets nip this slump in the bud :B)

Haven't you been going on for the past year on how great Gomez is?? Well its nice to see that you've come around. There IS a reason why he was considered the worst contract in hockey until Redden was signed by the NYR.

If they can't move this guy over the summer, he needs the same treatment as Redden, because he is not only just taking up cap space he is using up a roster spot that at this point I think anyone from Hamilton can fill. I also don't want to hear about how he is a winner who brings his game to the playoffs. I think Gomez MAYBE has played 5 or 6 decent games this year.

What i don't get is the total hate and short fuse with AK46 versus the patience people have shown Gomez. IMO if AK46 is traded and goes to team with a coaching staff that will utilize him for what he brings, we'll be talking again about another guy we gave up for a bag of pucks. THere is no reason for this team to be as bad on 5 on 5 as they have been and they have enough guys who can score. The issue is the system the coaching staff is employing does not suit the players the habs have. We can blame injuries to key guys like Gorges, Markov and Cammy, but IMO, the main issue with the team is the system they are playing.

After the teams lousy december, we have won a lot of games we were pretty lucky to get the two points, but for the most part the team really hasn't looked good in a long while.

The veterns (other then Pleks & Gionta) have sucked and if it wasn't for the kids, we would probably not be in a playoff spot. The sad thing is that the kids probably wouldn't have gotten a chance if it wasn't for the injuries. In fact if Gorges and Markov weren't injured, I really doubt if Subban or Weber would have been given the oppertunity to progress and would probably have been riding the pine.

Anyway, The team better show up tonight, it was bad enough to lose to the Isles after getting beaten up in Boston, but to lose to the Leafs is really not going to do much for their confidence. Given we are playing Brian the Goon's leafs, I can see the leafs taking the same type of cheap shots as the bruins, i just hope the habs don't get sucked into that kind of crap - mainly becuase they really don't have the guys to stand up to most teams. What we don't need is so called leaders like Gomez take stupid penalties on top of not showing up for the game.

Gomez has played much worse this year than he did last year - and the numbers back that up. So I don't apologize for definding him last season, nor for being patient for a while this season. And were he still bringing quality playmaking on a regular basis, I'd continue to be on board. But he has absolutely blown chunks for 2/3 of an entire season. For a second line C and key cog on your roster, that is simply unacceptable. I agree that unless there is a radical turnaround we should eventually mete out the Redden treatment (although I might give him about 25 games into 2011-12 before taking that step, and give him fair warning of this possibility first).

Other than that, I disagree with almost everything in your post, including your griping about both the system - which is in fact the key to our success - and your attack on the veterans, who (Gomez excepted) have mostly been decent this season, given reasonable expectations. We should be happy the kids have stepped up instead of bitching about Hamrlik not being Chris Pronger.

The difference between Gomez and AK is that Gomez has proven he can be a lot better, while AK hasn't. I think Gomez is having a wretched season, but he might rebound in the playoffs or next year. I don't think AK will ever be much better then he is now.

While Gomez has struggled this year, I don't think he has every shown as much laziness as AK has. I still think both Gomez and Pleks are held back by our lack of a couple of big, scoring wingers to play with them. Cammy and Gionta are all we have.

Pleks has been great. While he could do even better with Lucic on the wing, nothing has really been 'holding him back' from being a fine player. The contrast with Gomez is glaring. Pleks makes his wingers better, Gomez drags them down. One finds ways to succeed, the other ways to f*ck up. At some point you have to call him out. That's why I say you give him until about the quarter pole of next season, then pull the trigger.

The only caveat is that he might be playing hurt in some way. I've heard nothing to this effect, but it might represent some sort of explanation for his non-stop suckage.

EDIT: way to go, PK! Of course, now The Code Police will attack him for not taking off his helmet

Interesting period. Habs look like a tighter unit tonight. JM has moved Gio to Gomez's line, trying to shake the latter out of his torpor. The risk is that Gomer Pyle will end up dragging Gio to perdition with him. But it's worth a shot.

I don't think Gomez is dragging his wingers down at all. I have seen him set them up repeatedly this year to watch them muck it up. My main issue with Gomez has been his defensive play more then anything else. (plus he tends to pass when he should shoot).

Pleks has been great, but he has had the benefit of our top wingers all season. Still, I think he would be near the top in the league this year the way he has played, if he had someone of similar quality to play with. When Cammy is hot, Pleks can rack up the points, but that is an off and on thing lately. I thought the Gionta, Gomez, Pacs line was doing well, but as soon as we lost Cammy the lines get shuffled and everyone suffers. Gomez has Moen tonight! Yikes. We need more wing depth.

Great fight by PK.. maybe that will shut some people up for a bit.

Not really. HNIC is profitable. My tax dollars are paying for "Canadian Made Drama" and imports of bad British soaps. :)

That said, Coaches corner just jumped the shark...

It defies belief. Remember, your tax dollars are paying for this.

Good one Brobin! I thought they jumped the shark when Cherry tried to make out with Doug Gilmour. That was even before there was a jump the shark. Ya, that was painful to watch.
