Build Your Habs

It should be noted that without the bonus cushion in place, teams simply cannot start over the cap. The Habs would forfeit all games until they get back in compliance. Weber also must clear waivers to go down and he'd easily be snapped up. Ponikarovsky will be lucky to get half of $2.75 M, he may even be lucky to get a contract period. (I like the out of the box thinking if nothing else.)

LOL

Got it. TY for the corrections! Good to know about the absence of bonus cushion - that relates to the expiry of the CBA at year end, I guess? Weber has to clear wavers even if he starts the year in Hamilton, eh? Could you please point me to a link where the finer points on waivers are explained?

Well, to stay outside the box, as per Topham at Lions in Winter suggestion, how 'bout PG shops Gorges around pre-draft to see what can be had for him. Perhaps a bump up on draft day? Our 17th pick + Gorges (+ something else?) for the 3-5 pick (whichever is COUTURIER)? That would get us below the cap, allow Weber to start in Montreal as the 7th D, and acquire the prospect of a next French Canadian Hero!

BTW - What makes you so glum on Poni? Did something happen to him (injury?) that he is no longer a big strong potential 20 goal scorer, or is it just poor performances in Pitts and LA that concerns people?

No player can be assigned to the AHL until the waiver period commences which is roughly 2 weeks before the start of the season (I forget the exact number off the top of my head). So Weber can't be sent through to the Bulldogs until the waiver period opens, hence, he'd have to clear. I'm sadly not aware of a link where the finer points are explained; everything's in the CBA as long as you're willing to tolerate a lot of lawyer-speak. The no bonus cushion does pertain to the CBA expiration, you're correct there.

As for Ponikarovsky, 2 horrendous stops in PIT and LA as you alluded to are concerning. Defensively, he's not good enough to be in a bottom 6 (unless you have 3 offensive lines) and he no longer can play a top six role. There were also a lot of concerns with his effort level which is what got him benched. He had to wait a long time to get a contract last summer and he didn't do anything to earn one quicker this time around, unless of course he's willing to take a significant pay cut.

Sign wiz. Trade Spacek for Ballard. Bad contract for bad contract. Burry Ballard in the minors. Lol

Ballard can certainly be had from the Cup champs - Vigneault, somewhat unfairly at face value, seems to have it in for him and they're paying well over $4 mil for a benchwarmer. Whether they'd accept Spacek in return is a whole other question. But I'm pretty sure Ballard could slot in very effectively as top-4 defenceman for us. And didn't Martin coach him in Florida? Hmmm.

That would be a great trade for us ha!

I cringed equally as much with Ballard and his mistakes as Spacek this year :P

Only Ballard will have some kind of future

I think Ballard has 2-3 years left - though not certain. I wouldnt want to take a bad multiple-yr contract for a bad 1 yr deal. This could be a change of scenery required situation, but who do we move to make room capwise?

Not Markov or gorges, who should be cheaper. Next year Subban gets a big jump. So who would we replace at the $4m spot?

4 years, $4.2 million per year left.

Yikes - not worth the risk at that salary and term

It's an interesting question...Ballard was universally regarded as a top-4 defenceman prior to this season, including by the probable Cup champion Canucks. So what happened? Was he overrated all along? Is he damaged goods due to last year's serious injuries? Is he an 'Eastern Conference'-type player ill-equipped for the West (although personally I think the differences between Conferences are often exaggerated)? OR, is he a classic case of a player who has become artificially undervalued as a result of his being a poor fit for a given role/team environment/coaching staff?

I'm not a scout. I don't know. He could be the second coming of Paul Mara, who inexplicably went from being a top-pairing offensive defenceman to being a fringe NHLer in the very prime of his career. But if he really is just a guy who, for whatever reason, hasn't fit in Vancouver, then - assuming we don't re-sign Wiz - I wouldn't mind the Habs sniffing around to see if they can scoop him up. Whether he is or isn't would be a question for your professional, crack pro scouting staff to work out.

I'd much rather give a little more to Wiz who has proven himself and find another creative way to get rid of Spacek - i think he is movable if we move him to a team trying to get to the floor and could use a veteran preseance - if we throw in a mid level draft pick (i.e. our 3rd/4th pick) in exchange for a low draft pick (i.e. 5th/6th pick from someone).

If we can sign Wiz AND Markov i really like our D and moving a 3rd/4th pick is worth the cap space by unloading a slow, useless Spacek, over rolling the dice on Ballard on deal that could screw us for 4 years.

There is also an argument for a floor team to take him and buy him out. Though the full cap hit remains, the actual buyout money wise is still 2/3 over two years. A team with a really cheap owner could find small value in that.

I totally agree about Desharnais on the wing - been saying he should be on the wing since they called him up. I think we handcuff both Desharnais and Eller by playing them with scrubs. However, unless we can get a 1 year deal for Jagr, I'd much rather have Ak46 stay with Cammi and Pleks and giving Pouliot one last chance and play with Desharnais and Eller. With Trotter back in the fold, let Trotter and Pouliot fight for the 3rd line role in camp. I'd love to have 3 lines that are a solid scoring threat.

While, I'd love to get Laich, unless we move Gomez, IMO, its pretty pointless to have the centre depth be Pleks, Gomez, Laich, Eller. I think we need to give Eller a more of a role with front line players or at least offensive guys, rather then have him play with least scurbs with no hands like Moen or Darche. Getting rid of GOmez (would have to be buried in the minors which mean the Moslons have to be willng to eat the cost), would allow us to have Eller and Laich fight for the second/third line role.

FOr the 4th line, I really think we need to target a big physical guy who has a high percentage of wins on the draw and platoon that person with someone from Hamilton. IF we could, I'd also like to move Moen for a big guy who actually USES his size on a more regular basis.

2 things Wiz is gone. trade his rights for something and carry on. I do however like johan hedberg at 1.2 mill better than the tall bald one at 1 million. Not too sure that will happen though.

Should be noted the wide range between how much you guys give to Josh Gorges. 2,250,000$ to 3,500,000$

Indeed. I also wonder about the near consensus on Pacioretty getting 1.5$ More money going his way is entirely possible.

I think he's going to be looking for something closer to, or over $3m. We could try lowering the cap hit with a longer term deal, but given some if the other deals out their, I think he probably will get $3m+.

I love that team. Why? Because everything changes by adding just one impact player. Suddenly we're a 4 line scoring threat with cap space to spare. Even if Jagr only scores 20 goals, it still makes all the other lines better.

Some say that Jagr doesn't fit the current team mould, but dammit I don't care when the roster is that damn pretty looking.

I'm with you on taking the gamble on Jagr, but don't agree on Auld or the lines.

I really don't think he is an adequate backup - his stats are largely a basis of his competition and I'd rather have someone who could be trusted to give Price more rest.

I also don't want to see the 3rd/4th lines being thinned by having skilled guys playing with scrubs. I think that is part of the reason guys like Pouliot and Eller aren't producing and for Desharnais to progress – they have to play with skilled guys and need to be no lower then the 3rd line. Lastly, I think Desharnais should be on the wing.

Here's the lines I'd like to see - assuming they manage to get Jagr signed and we are stuck with Gomez (who I wanted gone yesterday). I think Pouliot is pretty much finished if Jagr is signed though – although I’d rather dump Moen.

Except except where otherwise stated, i've gone with your salary numbers.

FORWARDS:

Gionta-Gomez-MaxPac - $14.357M

Cammy-Pleks-Jagr - $14M

Desharnais-Eller-AK46 - $5.2M

White-Palushaj-Pouliot - $2.8M (OR ANOTHER HAMILTION CENTRE)

Extra - Darche $0.7M, Trotter .6M

- dump Moen for a 5th or 6th round pick removing his $1.5M hit. If need be offer Moen and our 5th pick for somebody's 6th. That shouldn't be necessary

someone would probably take him for a late pick.

Total FORWARDS: $36.957M

DEFENSE

Markov - Subban - $5.75m (sign Markov to 6yr $30M/6yr deal)

Wiz - Yemelin - $5.1M (Sign Wiz to 4yr/16.8M)

Weber-Gorges - $3.5M (sign Gorges to 5 yr/14M)

Gill - 2.25M (perfect world - Gill is not an everyday player if Weber & Yemelin step up and even then, by end of the year

I see him being a PK specialist and the 7th Dman - assuming Yemelin and Weber show they are ready for primetime)

- Means dumping Spacek and his $3.5M hit, along with our 4th round pick for Floridas 8th round pick.

- Hell I'd even be willing to move a 3rd round, in exchange for a 5 round, if we could get rid of the cap hit.

-Going with two young guys like Yemelin and Weber is a risk, but I think Yemelin is not a tradionional rookie and Weber has shown progression the psat year. Worst come to worst, we have other guys in Hamilton and just signed that other Swiss FA in the offseason.

Total DEFENSE - $16.6M

GOALIE:

Carey Price - $2.75M

Hedberg - $1.2M

Total Goalie - let's just say $4M

Total on players = $56.957M

Plus the buyout for that bum Laraque - $.5M

Bonuses - $0.6M

Total Cap hit for year = $58.657M

Expected Cap for next year = $62.5M

Leaving a cushion of just under $4M to carry an extra roster player, if an injury happens or pick up someone at the deadline.

Next year, regardless of how Gomez does, I'd move him, that will free up the money to resign Price, Subban and Eller long-term. There will also be money freed up from Gill.

1. Auld was really just there in my lineup as a placeholder. Ultimately, we probably won't get anyone better for the same price, but it's the price that is most important to me in this instance.

2. It's not necessarily about skill vs scrubs on the 3rd and 4th line... it's about defensive accountability. Desharnais - Eller - AK46 scares the hell out of me in our own end, and that's the line that other teams will key on if possible. Moen there suddenly adds a shutdown presence that I am more comfortable with.

3. This may have been a joke, but I'm pretty sure there is no 8th round :P

1. I think I'd rather even trade for a younger goalie goalie then bring back Auld.

2. I don't know - Desharnais was used on the PK last year, Eller showed much more responsobility in the playoffs - much more then Gomez. The only way you are going to find out if Eller and Desharnais are going to make it offensively is having them play with guys that can actually finish. IMO, its pointless to have them play with Moen and his hands of stone. AK46 is also MUCH more of a physical presence them Moen has ever been and considering that he IMO is actually a top six forward, he has been pretty responsible. in his own end. To me, if Eller and Desharnais to demeonstrate they are raady, having them play with a guy who can actually finish AND set them up (AK46 showed some pretty good playmaking abiility during the playoffs as well), may be exactly what's needed to see if Eller can become a 2nd line centre.

3.Not a joke - at one time the draft used to be 9 rounds - but i think you are right, draft may be only 6 rounds now. Point i want to make is that in exchange for a very low draft pick, you can offer a draft pick from a couple rounds earlier as incentive to take a guy like Spacek (veteran presence, only one year left on his contract, possible asset on deadline day) to a rebuilding team needing get to the cap floor.

We get caproom by getting rid of a bad contract and also pickup a low pick. THe other team is able to get a one year deal that allows them reach the cap floor, as well as a add a veteran presence to mentor their young players and the other team also ends up with a potential tradable asset in Spacek that could bring back a return at the trade deadline. Win-Win situation.

Frolov has signed long-term overseas, his NHL days are over. Even if they weren't, he's coming off an abysmal injury plagued year, I don't even think his KHL team will have him on their front line.

The more I think about it, the more I think Wiz should be signed if possible. We are on here talking like Hammer is some old slow bad defenseman. There is no doubt he lost a step, but for the last two years he has been the team's number One D. With Gill signed, I would rather let him go at this time, but it does leave a hole. I have seen too many sophmore slumps to count and to assume Subban will not have one may be a bit optimistic. Yemilin is supposed to be good, but will certainly have an adjustment period. Markov and Gorges are both back from season ending injury. That is a lot of what ifs. If he could unload Spacek, it would be good to see both Wiz and a three million dollar player added, but I wouldn't count on both. I think you will see one or the other. In that case, I think defense is the place to add.
