OK thanks, didnt know how deep the team is, or how many dont get invited to summer thing and still make the team, likely few i suppose.

Cayden Lindstrom (4th overall pick) is projected for fourth line to give you idea of depth.

How will he look in pre-season?

2024 Montreal Canadiens Top 25 Under 25: #19 Oliver Kapanen (habseyesontheprize.com)

Kapanen’s 34 points (14G, 20A) over 52 games were nothing spectacular for Liiga as he finished 51st in scoring. The playoff numbers were a different story. His 14 points (7G, 7A) in 13 games had him finish third in points, tied with the first-place Anton Levtchi of Tappara who had more goals, but played more games.

Said he would like to be at Habs development camp next year, was recovering this year.

Good for Bogdan to face off vs NHL players, albeit pretty relaxed game no doubt.

Igor Larionov Sees Big Future For Canadiens Prospect Bogdan Konyushkov (rg.org)

"It was great to face off against Malkin, Ovechkin and Panarin. Watching Ovechkin's first goal will give you an idea of the high level of skill in the NHL. It was amazing to play against players I admired as a child. As a young fan, I particularly liked Dmitry Orlov when he played for the Capitals. He was a tough defender with a high IQ, and watching him was a delight. It was also a pleasure to shake hands with him after the charity game in Moscow."

Likely thats the reason.

I-M-O it would be nice if he went that route ... gives players up to four years to develop if they need it ... and goaltender development being voodoo those extra years are welcome.

Since he wasn't drafted out of the CHL but out of Europe, he already had the four-year timeline.  If anything, this could push it to five years before he needs to sign.

5 years if he stays in school.

He could bring it back to four by de registering after his junior season and becoming a UFA at that point (if not signed).

Protz is the guy I’m interested in.

I have heard many sportscasters describe a hard, tough player and read many scouting reports that talk about a player’s toughness and meanness.

Never in my life have I heard of a player described as, “the most violent player on the ice”.

I hope Protz’s violence is beneficial to the team.

Maybe be like a Emelin/Romanov?

We can just hope Habs skills coaches can help improve or build up his game over next few years.

And that is the key, if Protz can improve his skating then he will be a very interesting prospect.  Romanov was definitely a better skater at the same stage of his career but Protz is still young, has a  great attitude and built like a tank. Improving his skating is what he needs to do.

Kapanen will have a bit of an edge at the Habs' training camp having played the full set of SHL pre-season games prior to it.

Demidov's KHL team 1st game Sept 5.

Yes Kapanen should be warmed up, but Is there an open spot up front for him to fight for? He likely will go back to Europe for 1 more season wont he?

That's the likeliest outcome but they're not disrupting the start to his season simply for something to do.  If he's coming to camp (and he is), he's coming with management's belief that he could legitimately make a push to make the team.  Otherwise, it'd be a waste of time for the most part.

Everyone invited to a camp gets a chance.  Never know when someone totally unexpected comes out of nowhere and earns a spot.

Just google Joe Andreesen.

Undrafted NFL free agent LBer, didn't even get a UDFA contract on the day of the draft (like most UDFAs do), instead he went to Buffalo's rookie camp as an unsigned tryout.  At rookie camp he Earned a spot and contract to go to main camp.  Started main camp as a 4th stringer with virtually no chance to make it.  Had a good camp.  When a couple LBers got injured he started a pre-season game.  Was dominant in that game.  Got another pre-season start and while he wasn't dominant like the first game, was still good, made the Main Team (not practice squad, main team).  Meanwhile a former Pro Bowl LB in Deion Jones was cut.

So the thing for Kapanen is .... go to camp.... play your heart out and while you may not be in the plans right now, if you dominate enough, and leave management no choice but to keep you, they will.
