Its early, but 6 points in 7 games is mediocre for a player who is in his fourth year as a junior eligible.  We need him to be well over 1 PPG if we want to say he's anything other than an NHL long shot.

This isn't just about Thorpe, this is about all 19 year olds playing in the CHL.  You want to see them dominate at that level.

Still early so plenty of time to get there, but we want to see him up the pace.

This has always been the case whether we are talking Mesar, Florian Xhekaj, Thorpe, McCarron, and others.  Look at the beginning of this thread and the numbers Gallagher was putting up in his two years after being drafted.

Ice times are bizarre and the shift lengths are also bizarre.

Why sit him for the first period?

Unless the Gazprom executive responsible for the SKA Saint Petersburg file is a board member, and could therefore be influenced to make a coaching change, I have simply resigned myself to being frustrated by how their idiot ... err ... head coach manages Demidov.

Why frustrated, was a likely scenario pre-season; a rookie moving on to NHL in April might get short end of stick or be demoted. Not much can be done to change a rich self appointed coach's decisions, i guess?

Anyways, just another 6 months before #91 will be playing with the Habs. Just can hope he stays healthy and earns some more icetime.

it was just after benching for 2nd period tripping penalty, that icetime plummeted.

(My guess is that he said something to Rotenberg that wasnt appreciated?)

Didn't say I didn't understand how the KHL too often works or even expected how Demidov would be treated, but just because it is reality doesn't mean it isn't frustrating.

Demidov played limited minutes; but still looked shifty and almost tucked one home and had bunch of good plays in 7minutes or whatever he had.

See the short video of his limited minutes on youtube.

Found some recent comments from Rotenberg. It seems that he believes he knows best how to develop players ...

“I’m sure that Ivan is developing, he plays a lot for us. He trains with great players, with masters, many of whom played in the NHL. We played hundreds of matches! We won the Stanley Cup, there are guys with Gagarin Cups, we won the Olympics. Therefore, he has a lot to learn,” said SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg.

"You are talking about playing time, about i-time—apparently, you received your education in America. But we must look objectively at all the qualities of a hockey player. Even if he played one shift and scored the winning goal. I was watching the World Youth Championship, one US player sat the entire match, and then came on one shift and scored the winning goal. This means that the head coach prepared him well for one shift. There are such examples in football too. Remember a player like Solskjaer from Norway? It was called Golden substitute. Do you know what this is?"

— Your rising star Ivan Demidov played today as the 13th striker, only six shifts, and did not play at all in the third period. Why so little?

- A very strong opponent. It was a dice-to-dice game, especially since everyone knows how well Dynamo plays on counterattacks. This is a very strong team. And any mistake, any lost duel or encounter can lead to a difficult situation at our gates. And if we want to cement our defense, then everyone must fulfill the game task. And it doesn’t matter what someone’s last name is. We need a team game.

Thanks for the post, it was interesting.

I'm Quite confident that St. Louis will use different coaching methods.

I am sure St. Louis will use different coaching methods but I am not bothered if his current team sits him because he is not playing the way they want, don't want him to feel entitled. Also less chance of injury. LOL

My take is that they are sitting him because Rotenberg generally doesn't want to play young players as they might make a mistake and cost the team a game. Which really means that he's not going to get much development this season.

Your take makes perfect sense and is probably the correct one. Plus they know he will be gone next year so they are not too worried about long term development which is understandable. As long as they don't mess him up too much.

Sounds like a graduate from the Babcock dinosaur school of coaching - seems to be as much of a prick as Babcock was.
