A 2026 1st pick wouldnt hurt to add.

Do the Canucks have much exciting to offer for a Savard to help fill current gap?

NHL trade matchmaker: Predicting where top targets go by the deadline, part 2 - The Athletic

"The Canucks have struggled since losing Filip Hronek to a significant lower-body injury earlier this month, and they’re not expecting him to play again before February. That’s exposed a gaping need on the right side of the blue line that management has aggressively been trying to address."

So maybe we should not expect a first ? I mean I don’t mind a 2026 first round if that is all they got. I’d prefer it to a 2025 even. But it sounds like the return for Savard might not be that.

I don’t see why the market would dry up for a RHD rental, so I’m not giving up on receiving a first round pick. Both teams would want salary retention and we can provide it.

I've read reports that Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto and Edmonton are looking for a player like Savard.  I've read Edmonton, Vancouver and now Toronto linked to Savard.  The 1st round pick may be a little lofty, but if traded early the return will be higher because he will spend more time with the other team.

I've also read that there's an expectation that there will be a flurry of trades once the roster freeze gets lifted on the 28th.  None of this is confirmation of anything.

With Savard not having a great season and being a third-pairing player on a non-playoff team, good teams will be looking at him as a 5th/6th option.  They generally need to be legit top-four guys to have a shot at a first rounder.

What *** may *** make him somewhat unique amongst 3rd pairing defencemen is that the Habs are 10th overall on the PK and he leads their D in PK-TOI ... so a bit of a specialist.

If your coaching staff doesn't mind him defending flat on his belly

Hal Gill added at least a couple of years to his career doing that.

Now they’re talking Matheson. These Oilers want too much. Lock up your dog.

If they want Matheson they better pony up.

Minimum is the 2026 First round plus something.

What do they have worth taking ?

With Broberg and Holloway stolen by the Blues not much other than picks and maybe Beau Akey.

Good one!  Made me chuckle. But also some truth to it.

Guhle, at times, is doing the same on the PK isnt he? And many do it on 2-on-1s, not just Skillsy & Savard.:D

What about adding to Savard to get a first rounder back ?  We have 3x 3rd picks and Pitt's 2nd round pick if I'm not mistaken.

Savard or Evans & Flames 1st; for a top six centre prospect perhaps? Not sure what contender has the need and a prospect that fits, just spitballing.

If you're trading away a first rounder, would softening the blow by adding a third-rounder really be enough?  I feel like if Montreal was a buyer and they parted with a first-round pick for a rental third-pairing defenceman, the fact they got a third-rounder back with him wouldn't make me feel much better about it.

I think their best shot at getting a first back for Savard would be to take a contract back beyond this season.  If they were prepared to use some of their cap space early, they might have an outside shot at making that work.  (The other upside for that is you probably wouldn't need to retain on him in that move, freeing up the slot to be used on someone else.)

Last season Savard was playing well which the last retention spot was worth using on him.  Unless demand increases for him, and that’s very possible according to the D market, I wouldn’t use the spot on him.  As you point out, a contract in return may be a better way to go, but that wouldn’t help with getting under the cap.

Montreal would be far better off using the retention slot for Evans, making him extremely cheap.  That would probably be better use of the last retention spot.

i guess it’ll come down to priorities between maximizing return or getting under the cap.

But would Pitt's 2nd be enough of a softener ?  Getting Savard + a mid 2nd  for your potentially late first, not that bad for a team in win now mode.

I would agree, use those 2nd round picks to move up or as a sweetener in a deal to get a higher pick. The Habs have plenty of picks, it's more about quality than quantity right now.

What if you retained on Matheson? Pre deadline, offer him to a playoff bound team that has quality RD. Maybe they want to get money off the books and stay competitive.  I don't know a target. It's all hypothetical.  But could Matheson at 3 mill land a top 4 RD?

Any team trading for Matheson at the deadline aren't likely giving back a top 4 RD.

Flames perhaps?

It's better but the acquiring team is still losing one of its best trade chips for a third-pairing player.

Someone (TSN?) was suggesting that Habs might acquire Yanni Gourde from Seattle. He's expensive at $5M+ so the trade value should be fairly low and we have the cap space.

If Hughes gets a first for Evans and decides to trade him, could we pick up Gourde as a cheap (in terms of trade) veteran C replacement for the rest of the season? He's already 33 so might accept a short-term contract beyond this season, too.

It would make getting/staying out of LTIR difficult
