While HuGo have done a good job of locking up core pieces of the rebuild, I don't think a team with as many strong young pieces as the Habs wants to open itself up to a retaliatory war on offer sheets.

Agreed ... although, despite this season, Bedard is reputedly a near-generational talent who would give the habs one of the best 1-2 punches at centre ... but the better option is likely to look for offer sheet candidates on teams lacking cap space (not likely an issue for many, if any, teams this offseason) and trying to make a trade.

The 8 NHL teams with the best case to make an offer sheet this offseason - The Athletic

3. Montreal Canadiens
"This would be a lot of fun."

"One complicating factor: Their biggest need is down the middle and there’s not a whole lot of centers available as RFAs. But if they strike out on July 1, getting creative with an offer sheet on another top-six forward could be the right move for a front office that has quietly made a lot of them lately."

What about a short deal with Tavares?

I think he really wants to stay in Toronto. Of course, if the Leafs don't make an offer, that will not be an option.

I don't expect he would accept a one- or two-year deal, though.

Perhaps Nashville will be fed up with the Stamkos experiment and will look to move him cheap, all the while retaining salary. 🙂

Suzuki

Tavares

or

Suzuki

Stamkos

I’m fine with either tandem.

(This post is half tongue in cheek)

Stamkos has become more of a winger as he's aged then a centre (at least in Tampa thats what they did).  Cant say ive watched much of Nashville this year.

Hope you were able to dislodge the tongue.

Stamkos has a full NMC ... but they also have Ryan O'Reilly ... only $4.5M AAV for two more years, no trade impediments, 56.4% face-off success, 17g/45pts, but turns 35 on July 2nd ... could be a good "band-aid".

If the Devils crash out.  How about Dawson Mercer.

Rh is an issue.

23 years old.

Can play centre and wing.

Had 56 points two years ago (22-23) but just 36 and 33 the last two.

His four seasons in the nhl 17, 27, 20, 19 goals

On a positive note he hasn't missed a game in 4 years (his entire NHL career), that is pretty impressive. However his point totals the last 2 years are concerning. One mediocre year can be an anomaly but two back to back is a concern. I can't say I have watched him enough to have a creditable opinion.

Now how does the new GM feel about trading Horvat and/or Barzal and starting a rebuild?

I love the idea of Horvat, myself. Of course that’s the ‘Vancouver’ in me talking, but he seems like an ideal 2nd-line C on a contending team.

Horvat  does seem like an ideal 2nd line C on a contending team.  He does make 8.5M but the cap is going up and Laine's contract will be expiring in a year. If Laine doesn't resign then Horvat, Demidov is a great start for an excellent 2nd line.
