Who will it be, the assistant coaching edition

Now that the GM and coach issues are taken care of, the new question of the day is, who will the assistants be? Personally, although I have nothing against the guy, I think Cunneyworth has to go, there is no purpose to keeping him on the staff, I just don't know how he or the players would respond to that. My personal preference would be to bring back Carbonneau. I think he has an excellent knowledge of the game, especially special teams play, and he and Therrien worked together before, so it could be a good fit. One of the complaints players had with Carbo was that they never felt they knew how they stood with him, but Therrien will make sure everyone knows how they stand with him, I'm sure. Not sure who i'd pick as a second assistant, (Other than Robinson, who I don't believe is really that interested).

Someone on another board mentioned JJ Daigneault who is currently an assistant coach in Connecticut for the AHL. I think that would be a good pick.

Others have pointed out quite correctly that Jacques Martin was the bad cop and Kirk Muller was the good cop. Players could be angry at Martin for saying something about their game and then work on it with Muller.

Good cops, much like bad cops, only make good coaches for a while. The problem with good cops as head coach is that they have a tendency to get too close to the players, especially the veterans, and suddenly they can't discipline them for a bad game anymore because they are a friend. You need the dichotomy of both there to balance the team.

Therrien will need a good cop and a specialist.

There were some rumours yesterday about Martin Lapointe becoming one of Therrien's assistants. Anyone know what he's been doing since he retired?

He's a pro scout. The talk of him becoming an assistant seems weak since most of the talk is he'll either move to Montreal to take an office job or become a pro scout for the Canadiens and stay on the road, so his family can still live in Chicago.

Just had a thought for the good cop assistant.... how bout Doug Gilmour? I know, he was a hated leaf, but during his short stint in Montreal, he worked hard, and had the respect of all the players, and of his head coach, who just happened to be Michel Therrien. Any thoughts?

He was an absolutely useless coach in Kingston. He was pretty much just a figurehead. Not much of a hockey brain on him. He has already moved onto being the Frontenacs GM because he showed nothing as a coach.

Looks like he's taking the Director of Player Development job.

As for a name no one has suggested, how about Mike Haviland? He was shockingly let go from the Hawks a month or so ago and has a decent coaching resume (3 years as an AHL head coach including one as coach of the year, 4 years as Chicago's assistant). If Lapointe, who never played for Therrien, is/was actually being considered as an assistant coach, it stands to reason that a different Chicago guy could be suggested as well.

Seems like a natural pick, especially considering the streak of movements between Chicago and Montréal.

Here's an interesting recent article on Haviland http://blogs.suntime...ent_mike_h.html

Won't be Cunneyworth or Ladouceur, both were relieved of their duties.

I'm born and raised here. Not often I say this, but they're both better off elsewhere. Away from this zoo. I hope they find work.

He looks like a good choice, seemingly well respected by the players. But one of the comments of the above quoted article reported: "Hawks' coach Joel Quenneville, who made the decision to cut ties with Haviland after the assistant coach had lackluster results directing the power play and penalty kill last season, said after letting him go that there had been "dysfunction" among his coaching staff during the campaign". We all know our PP has to improve if we are going to make it onto the playoffs. I wonder who is available who has a really good track record running a PP?

Just correcting myself here, Lapointe played for Therrien back in junior.

HF boards has LaPoint as head of player development to be announced. If this is an appointment to bridge the development from the draft till they get to the bigs, I'm all for it. Seems to me we have away too many players falling by the wayside, on issues other than talent.
