Sign Jagr to play with Plekanec?

Call-ups rarely get the same role when they're recalled. Look at Palushaj (first liner to 4th), Engqvist (first liner; yes, seriously, to 4th), and St-Denis (25 minutes per game to 16-18). Dropping from 18 to 14 isn't that much by comparison.

Unless you're Wolverine.

The question is are you buying out Gomez? If so you can sign Jagr to 1 year and be in better shape. Even if he ends up only effective in 3rd line and PP ice time he will add a serious punch that is missing not to mention the mentoring aspect. I would much rather see him salute the Bell after scoring while wearing the RB&W! Would be a very happy fan to see that.

How big a contract do you think Jagr is getting.

And no, you are not buying out Gomez unless there is an Amnesty provision, the buy out cap hits are too big and not worth it. Send him to Hamilton.

When Pacioretty was first recalled, he wasn't getting anywhere near top time (ATOI of 12:37 in 2008-09, 12:42 in 2009-10). It was only after that whole 'If I'm not playing top-6 I'd rather be in Hamilton playing top-6' statement that really precipitated things. That came in the final year of his ELC, we're a couple years away from that with Leblanc still.

the trouble with jagr is he just turned philly down and I would assume they offerred him the 3.5 million he made last year so he looking for more money. Are we going to pay 5 mill for an very aging superstar?

I don't think he is playing simply for the money at this point. Philly was never one of the teams he wanted to be on in the first place. Perhaps he wants to see the other options.

I think some team will give Jagr 3.5 million again, if not more, which is why I don't expect to see him with the Habs, as much as we could use him, the cap situation might play against us, as we also need a reliable defenseman and another 3rd liner, at minimum. That could change, depending on what moves Bergevin makes, so I could be wrong, I suppose. Also, I really think Jagr will be looking for a 2 year deal this time, and I don't know if we'd be willing to offer that. He would look good with Pleks and Gionta, though.

We have two gigantic needs above all else: a minutes-eating defenceman and at least one top-6 forward. $3.5 million seems a pretty agreeable price to pay to address the latter need, especially on a short term deal.

The Globe is reporting Jagr might end up in Calgary. I understand the appeal of Iginla, but the idea of Jagr choosing Cowtown over Montreal bewilders me a bit.

Bigger and Meaner, PA Parenteau over Jagr.... DOES NOT COMPUTE.

No it doesn't. Really 2 thoughts. I'd rather have PA over Jagr and then want to get meaner on the bottom 6.

I got attacked on Twitter when I disagreed with this. I would be willing to bury the contract but a buyout would not be a detriment. It's not like we'll be a contender this year so why not buy him out and spend the $3.5 cap hit on Gomez. Next year it will be a $4.5 cap hit but we'll have the cap space with many entry level contracts on the horizon.

If I am Molson I wouldn't bury the contract at all. Convince him to play in Europe or buy him out. As a fan though I say bury it.

3.5, 4.5, then 1.66, and 1.66 after that.

I don't want 4 more years of Gomez on the cap, even if 1.66 is small, its still a hit for a guy not even on the roster.

The line at the World Championships in 2011 was Cerevenka - Plekanec - Jagr.... Guess who has Cerevenka?

Top of my head.....Boston.

A $1.67 cap hit to me is manageable. It all depends on Molson though. Ideal situation would be for Gomez to go play in Zurich or something

Gomez will be gone to the minors i believe unless a team wants him on re entry waivers. If i'm not mistaken in the minors he doesn't count against the cap? A buyout or re entry waivers he does?

Jagr wouldn't sign last year witht he Habs, why would he sign with a bottom feeder?

Nope, Calgary agreed to terms with Cervenka earlier this offseason. It wasn't long ago that they were showcasing themselves as a package deal when both were still overseas.

I'm not sure we have many budding wingers that would potentially hit 50+ points like this future first ballot HHOFer.

Jagr would create SO much room for Pleky and Gionta...it would be unreal. I could see Plek getting 70pts again with someone like him. Given what's on the UFA list and what term they're all looking for, what other options do we have for the short term solution as our youth grows into their future roles? There's always room for a spoiler, but i don't think Leblanc or anyone else would fill the spot. OK maybe Gallager, but that 2nd line averages less than 5"10 at that point.

There's no way Montreal should say no to Jagr, but I can think of plenty of reasons why he wouldn't want to play in Montreal. Money aside, I can only think that his rapport with Pleks and the promise of top 6 ice-time would entice him to come play for the Habs. I feel like Cup contending teams would be more attractive to Jagr.

One word is that he wants to play in Canada, to experience that. If this is your goal, then no city better captures the experience than Montreal. Besides, only one of the seven teams is even remotely a Cup contender, so it's slim pickings in that sense (although I can absolutely see Vancouver making a play for Jagr if Gillis is confident of moving the Luongo contract).

There is the chance of an amnesty buyout period when the new CBA is done, as there was last time, which would give us the chance to buy out Gomez (and, in my dreams at least, Kaberle) without a cap hit, which Gomez would obviously prefer. I'd acually rather send him to the minors, because there is always the chance that he would quit or try to sign with a team in Europe, which would be the best case for the Habs. Either way, his time here is over. That move gives us cap room for a top 6 winger (such as Jagr) and a couple of bottom 6 players (I'm still hoping we resign Moen). I agree, however, that Jagr signing here is a longshot.

Wouldnt want Jagr nor Latendress. Jagr is a good fit for a contender like Rangers/Canucks maybe and Latendress is good for a local McDonalds flippin burgers.

Montreal was on Jagr's short list of teams last year, he came right out and said it. I'd love to see what a season of Pleks and Jagr on the same line would bring. The number of line combos Pleks had to endure last year was staggering. Put them together, and say you've got until Christmas, let it rip! Oh, and let's not forget, we've got the Casino, and we know about Jagr and gambling.
