Guest Stogey24
I think Diaz will be in a package deal. MB has to bring in a big D-man. If he doesn't bring in a big body that can make a hit and clear the net for Carey; I have have lost a significant amount of faith in our gm. On another note, but the same type of scenario; it's time for Montreal to bring back a heavy weight champ. When ever Prusty got tossed from a game I could see teams take advantage of it. Honestly without Prust who do we have? Moen can't stay on his skates during, white can throw but I've seen him get filled in too many times, and then I guess Frankie? Machine of Loving Grace
Sign Horton for $5-6M? On a long term deal? The guy who only started to play tough when he got to Boston and after injuries is softening up ? Ugh. Stay the course. Let the kids mature. Machine of Loving Grace
What kids? Who are the wingers ready to step in and replace Cole/Ryder? Move Galchenyuk and Eller into top six positions. Keep Gallagher in a top six position. Why are we trying to replace Cole still? Bourque stepping up replaced his size for the most part. Gallagher scoring replaced his goals. I'm of the opinion that once Galchenyuk, Eller and Gallagher get more minutes, our team moves into a better position. Trying to replace guys on the UFA is the wrong way to go. Give the kids more minutes, let them fail and succeed. Keeping them down on the depth chart isn't going to help anyone. What more can you do with less than a minute of powerplay time and less than 15 minutes of ice time?

Machine of Loving Grace
We aren't in a complete rebuild, so you can bet MB will do everything he can to compete each season. It's pretty much his job. Who said moving to the youngsters is not competing? Galchenyuk lit it up at the end of the season. He was a rookie and at times our best player on the ice against Ottawa. He was averaging 13 minutes in those playoff games. If he's going to be a part of our core for the future we need to give him situations to step up. That means giving him more minutes, not moving Ryder's minutes to some UFA we overpaid on the free market. Brendan Gallagher was only a few votes away from winning the Calder trophy and was one of our best forwards in the season. He was 9th in average ice time for forwards. Why not play him more? Why not play your best players more? Why are we trying to sign an injured Nathan Horton or an overrated Ryane Clowe when we can add the character we need right in our roster? That's all not even forgetting Lars Eller is now turning into the player we want him to be and if his injury against the Senators hasn't caused any set backs (hopefully like Pacioretty it just makes him hungrier) we got the guy who will replace Desharnais minutes on the top six, create more size against better competition and be an offensive threat. I should remind that Lars Eller played only 32 minutes of power play in 46 games but still had five powerplay points. We have the players we need right on the roster. Grass ain't always greener elsewhere.
ForumGhost
The problem with that is that our main weakness is still size. While I love guys like DD and Gallagher, it's hard to imagine our current team grinding our way past teams like Boston, LA, etc. to a Stanley Cup. Not to mention Gallagher and Galchenyuk still have yet to see an 82 game schedule. If our team is gunna go in for the long haul, we need to be able to dish and take punishment rather than just trying to outskate it all the time. We need to be built for the long haul. He doesn't want to play the style that we need and Boston was requiring him to play. Pass on him I think Diaz will be in a package deal. MB has to bring in a big D-man. Erskine was available on waivers back in Feb. Diaz isn't going anywhere. Who would want him besides the Habs? Prust,at 195lbs,can't be an enforcer. I called he wouldn't last a full season w/o being real banged up without backup. Thankfully and surprisingly he didn't get a concussion Edited July 3, 2013 by jcc10
TurdBurglar
Diaz isn't ready to be traded. He only started to break into his offensive form this season. Give him another year, and someone to play with on the PP and he'll have great value next offseason. Every team pays well for a PP QB. Either we're grooming Diaz to be our next Markov or we're upping his value, either is fine with me. I don't think we need major additions this season, but if we groom some of our talent for next offseason (Desharnais, Diaz) we may get a great return. Don't forget Diaz was on pace for 49 pts in a full 82 game season. That was on pace for 29 in 48 games, which is top-10 defenseman production numbers, tied for 6th actually. He needs a full season of this production to be worth trading. If he gets 45+ pts next season we can easily get a second line winger or 2nd round pick for him. While we want to be great now, we do have to keep pretty much the same team for next year. For growing in both skill and value of our own players. Colin
I read Strahberg or whatever his name is for 2 years, $4M. Apparently an option

How many "puck-movers" do you need. We need to get away from players that give up the puck to avoid a hit,and that bounce off forwards in the Dzone. He's the smurfiest of all our smurfs if you consider the position he plays. i don't read into "pace" either, after arguing that Higgins wasn't a 40 goal scorer because he had 10 in 20 games.Diaz will NEVER be another Markov I read Strahberg or whatever his name is for 2 years, $4M. Apparently an option I'll take AK46 back over Stallberg. At least he'll hit when the mood strikes him
ForumGhost
Stalberg? I always liked him. Big guy, soft hands. Kind of like a better Pouliot. Unfortunately, doesn't really use his size to play a power forward game. As for Diaz, with the way he was playing before he went down, I want him as a permanent fixture. He was playing a complete game and very strong defensively. If he can be Josh Gorges who can skate and pass, that would be great
Dylan George Joseph Hughes
clowe hitting the open market 20 goal scorer with a nice edge finishes checks, for sure an upgrade over armstrong last year. would fit well with prust and maybe eller as a third line. nihilz
Im hoping Nystrom & Prust playing 5 seasons together in the Flames system has an effect on his decision. He'd be a great addition.
Dylan George Joseph Hughes
the D situation in Montreal is great a lot of up an comers like tanordi who i think makes the squad this year over a guy like diaz. if thats the case diaz gets traded for sure with subban and markov we don't need him on the PP. beaulieu in the system too i don't see how diaz fits in anymore. He' was the West's version of Lucic before he got hurt. If healthy,a big if,he's the best UFA out there for our needs. if true that he had 2 concussions this year, then pass
ForumGhost
Not a lot of media outlets are talking about Iginla at all, despite the fact that he's easily at the top of he UFA list. Is it just a forgone conclusion he will resign with Pittsburg? I can't imagine they have the cap...

Is it just a forgone conclusion he will resign with Pittsburg? I can't imagine they have the cap... I don't see how they could and it is a little odd that he's flying under the radar. Being a secondary player with the Penguins seems to have eliminated some of the glamour associated with his name. I suspect when it comes time to put pen to paper though that someone will give him market value for sure.
Guest Stogey24
Diaz was good at the start of the year because he was in good shape. As soon as everyone dusted off their lockout cob webs, Diaz started rushing his passes and turning the puck over. There is no use for him on the back end. Trizzak
Filip Kuba just got bought out by Florida... Not a hitter, but he's big enough to clear a crease. Anyone know more about him?
dlbalr
Filip Kuba just got bought out by Florida... Not a hitter, but he's big enough to clear a crease. Anyone know more about him? He's slow. Very slow. 1 year on the cheap isn't a terrible idea but his best days are certainly behind him. Pickings are really slim for d-men so he'll get some interest I'd imagine. Here is my preview for some of the better d-men available (plus some options for Hamilton guys): http://www.habsworld.net/article.php?id=3126
ForumGhost
I don't feel we need to tinker with our defense. When Emelin returns, and assuming Tinordi starts in MTL, we will have two, big physical guys, plus Subban, Markov Gorges and Diaz. That's pretty solid in my books.
lazy26
For all those thinking our defense will be ok once Emelin gets back, please remember how screwed we were when Markov's recovery suffered setbacks. It could easily happen again, and although Emelin's absence isn't as likely to be as detrimental as that of Markov, we can't simply hope that the youngsters will step up. Easy Ryder
My guts says Simon Gagné might have a ticket for Montreal. And he would come pretty cheap, upside would bring speed even at his age , experience on the top 9. Plays both wings. In the same risk mode i'd like Malhotra, speed and size.
