Potential Starting Lineup Combos

As we get ready for Camps to open....

A look at a potential Habs starting lineup

http://lastwordonsports.com/2013/08/31/starting-line-up-the-montreal-canadiens/

Those are the exact lines I came up with as well.

However, even though those are the lines I think they will go with, the lines I think they should go with are:

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gionta

Galchenyuk - Briere - Bourque

Desharnais - Eller - Gallagher

Moen - Prust - White/Parros

Let's put our best winger with our best centreman and see what happens. That's an 80+ goal top line if they click.

Bourque moves to the right wing to break up the >5'10" top 9 on that side. Galchenyuk and Briere work magic while Bourque creates space.

Desharnais still keeps a sniper on his line, but moves to the wing and let's Eller take over the tougher assignment at centre.

4th line is self-explanatory.

D lines stay the same. 38 year old Bouillon will probably start losing steam just as Emelin gets back, and then he and Murray can tandem in the 6/7 role.

My thinking is that year to year, unless you're team is as stale as the Bruins, or you have a world beating duo like Crosby and Kunitz the lines are always a bit of a surprise. Here's what I see:

Bourque Eller Briere (#2)

Pacioretty Plekanec Gallagher

Galchenyuk Desharnais Gionta

Prust White Parros

Galchenyuk and Desharnais get their sheltered minutes while having Gionta to balance out the sophomore slump and streaky play of DD. Galchenyuk finds his goal scoring touch like Pacioretty two years ago. The exploitation line. Eller gets an increased role as a number two center with the vets. Plekanec finally gets some real wingers and is made a true #1 center. Best numbers of his career. Moen platoons with Parros.

I'm liking all these combos. But deep down we all know Desharnais will get top six and Pacioretty at his side. Lost opportunity of you ask me. Lets hope if he's there and not scoring the staff will give Eller a chance. I honestly believe Eller is one of Montreals best, even though I know a lot of people don't see it.

Galchenyuk - Briere - Bourque

Maybe later in the year switch up this line to Bourque - Galchenyuk - Briere ?

Unless they were completely clicking of course. Just thinkin of chucky's development at center.

This is exactly my thinking. If Galchenyuk starts to prove he can handle centre (with this season or next season), shift Briere to right wing and Bourque back to left.

What I think:

Pacioretty Plekanec Briere

Galchenyuk Eller Gallagher

Bourque Desharnais Gionta

Moen White Prust

What I'd like:

Pacioretty Galchenyuk Briere

Bourque Plekanec Gionta

Prust Eller Gallagher

Moen XXXXX White

Parros

DD moved for a proper mobile 4th line center with size, grit and above average f/o abilities.

Watch out for Magnus Nygren. Wouldnt suprise me if he made the roster.

What do you think of him? I snorted when EOTP put him in the top-6, but i've never seen him play, outside of YouTube highlight reels/

I really hope he's out. I don't want to see a Bozak/Kessel situation with Pac/DD

With our top 9 most of the players are interchangeable, so line combos at this point matter less than for most teams. It'll all be switched around every game or two like usual anyways. That said, I like the idea of trying Patches with Pleks, but I'm not sure about Briere at centre. Galchenyuk seems more eligible to eventually push Desharnais to the wing.

I know you're asking Dalhabs but I'll offer my two cents here as well. I don't think he'll make the team but I won't go as far as to say there is 0% chance either. How his developing defensive game (which took a big step forward last year but still needs some work) translates to the North American ice surface will determine where he plays as offensively, he's good enough to hack it with the big club. I don't think he'll crack the roster for opening night (especially since there's a case to be made that there aren't any spots available with seven guys on one-way deals plus Tinordi who some think is NHL ready) but we'll likely see him at some point this year.

What an embarrassment of riches on the back end. At some point in the next two years, a d/f prospect and a first is going to be a blockbuster trade.

Diaz/Collberg/1st

For

James Neal/Hartnell/Ryan/Vanek

Lets hope not vanek or Hartnell in a couple years time. They'll be gettin on the older side

I agree with Lovett's first sentence and with Neech. The lines are going to be mutable, both between games and within them; the days of 3-4 stable lines went out with porn-staches, golden skates and eyeglasses. I guarantee you that no matter what the combos turn out to be from game to game, at least 50% of the online fan-base is going to be fulminating about how self-evidently idiotic they are. Only on rare occasions - e.g., Martin's initial yet baffling refusal to put Cole on the PP - is the coach as obviously wrong as all this dudgeon would have us believe. So while it's an interesting parlour game it tends to get counter-productive really quickly IMHO.

What I think we will see with a healthy lineup:

Bourque - Plekanec - Gionta

Pacioretty - Desharnais - Briere

Galchenyuk - Eller - Gallagher

Prust - White - Moen

Parros

Gorges - Subban

Markov - Emelin

Murray - Diaz

Bouillon, Drewskie

Price

Budaj

What I'd like to see tried:

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gionta

Galchenyuk - Eller - Gallagher

Bourque - Desharnais - Briere

Moen - Prust - White

Parros

Also I'm 99% sure Nygren will not crack the lineup.

I hope we don't try that, like in 2011-12 with Plekanec. It's always SHG-city.

Some forwards can play the point very well without giving up too many sh chances.

Plekanec didn't do well your right but to toss the strategy out without trying a different player in the role would be short sighted.

Buffalo lead the league with seven SHGA so it's a minor concern anyways.

Yeah 14 over a whole seasons not a lot to worry about, although those goals can be back breakers.

Yeah. It has more to do with the in-game results than the quantity. This 10-12 goals won't necessarily cost 20-24 points, but they might just as well, who knows ?
