Who is the Habs 3rd best player (behind Price/Subban)?

Had a thought concerning the top three players on the current edition of the Habs. Most would peg Carey Price and P.K. Subban as the teams top two players, but who's number three? Some options:

Max Pacioretty - Top goalscorer

Tomas Plekanec - Two-way player, logs a ton of hard minutes

Alex Galchenyuk - The future, but not necessarily the present

Brendan Gallagher - Leaves it all on the ice

Andrei Markov - PP QB specialist, but aging

If you have an argument as to why Price/Subban would actually be the third best player behind one of the aforementioned Habs, I'm interested in hearing that too!

I say Pleky as well, it seems sometimes some ppl forget not only how good he is but also how constant, game in game out.

Today : Plekanec.

Tomorrow : Galchenyuk. Tha being said, put Galchenyuk between Pacioretty and Gallagher and he becomes our best forward, IMO.

Totally agree with this. Also I would love to see patches centered by pleck, but obviously MT will never do that because that would just decrease DD s impact / value even further.

Not that I dont have faith in Chucky but if for whatever reason he doesent become the player we all beleive and hope he will be (perennial all-star center averaging 1 + ppg) then we will be really screwed. This teams ability to be a contender in the future relies heavily on his development.

Interesting to see Plek get a lot of love in this thread. When I posed the same question on Twitter - most of the responses were for Pacioretty.

I still haven't really figured out if I'm on the Pacioretty side or Plek side. They're both very good at what they do, although Plek brings more to the table with his two-way game. Hard to find 40-goal scorers, though.

Pacioretty- Only first liner on the whole team, he might be a 40 goal scorer if he had a true first line center like Crosby or Joe Thornton passing him the puck.

Note: you can be a true first-liner without being a hall of famer.

Pac can score goals, that's honestly about it. He's not even noticeable when he's not burying.

Bit of a bump since I'm planning an 'Around the Boards' column on the main site later this week. So if you have some more thoughts on the topic - throw them in and they might get featured.

And to spice things up, how would you rank the Top 5 Habs? For example, my list:

1. Carey Price

2. P.K. Subban

3. Tomas Plekanec

4. Max Pacioretty

5. Alex Galchenyuk

I'd say that Pleks is the best all round player on this team. Win or lose, he plays well. That being said, when maxpac is scoring this team is winning more. When his line is dry so is the habs offence and with a team that struggles to score, I think you have to give the nod to MaxPac. i think his contract may be the best in hockey. How many guys on pace for 35+ goals are locked up for $4.5M for another 5 years?

In another year or two, we may be discussing if Galchenyuk is the best player on this team, but i wouldn't put him in the top 3 right now.

I'm inclined to agree with your list simply because everyone is running for cover when the roll call for the no. 5 spot comes up. Galchenyuk looks good because he's not in the lineup. Markov has taken a precipitous fall since the early season, when he was easily on everyone's list. Gallagher is a default choice, but it says something bad about the team if he's one of our very best players.

I'll go a different direction and say Gallagher. Maybe not the highest skill player, but brings it every night, goes where most of our "big" guys won't.

He's the type of player you need to win in this league.

Eliminating potential from the discussion, it's a significant drop off after what I would consider the top 4, Price, Subban, Plex, Patches. If I were forced to choose, it would most likely be Markov, although I'd sure like him to log fewer minutes. He's had a couple of games this year (Chicago, recently, comes to mind) where he was dominant in nearly every facet of the game. I can't think of another player that can do that amongst the players remaining. Eller? He did so at the beginning of the year, but ever since the initial breakup of the EGG line, he's not nearly as effective as he was. Galchenyuk has shown flashes, and he's still 19, but he's not there yet. Gallagher is a strong player, and he's a pain to play against, but unlike the other players I've mentioned, I don't see Gallagher being able to dictate the flow of a game.

1. Price

2. Subban

3. Plekanec

4. Pacioretty

5. Markov

Expanding a bit...

6. Gallagher

7. Galchenyuk

8. Eller

9 Gorges

10 Prust/Moen (they kinda tie...Moen in 2014 is Prust in 2013)

I'd like to list Emelin. In pre-ACL injured form last year (and on his correct side), he shuffles into the top 10. In current 2014 form, he drops out of the top 10. That said, after Gally, Chucky, and Eller, I have a hard time filling in past that.

I'll keep on pace with my previous post in this thread.

Today

1. Price

2. Subban

3. Plekanec

4. Pacioretty

5. Galchenyuk

Tomorrow

1. Subban

2. Price

3. Galchenyuk

4. Pacioretty

5. Plekanec

** I definitely hope that a new comer will outrank Plekanec for 5th spot or even Max for 4th spot in the future.

I would rank them the exact same way, with Markov at 6.

Their third BEST player is clearly Plekanec. He and Markov are the most complete players on the team, and Tomas hasn't been slowed by age and injury the way Andrei has. Pleky is also very consistent. Even if he's not contributing on the scoresheet, you can bet he's killing it on the PK.

Now, their third MOST IMPORTANT player would be Pacioretty. This is a team that struggles to score goals, so having a scorer like Pactioretty is huge. The team would have at least 3-4 fewer wins right now if you replace Patches' 25 goals with some generic 10-15 goal scorer.

P.S. I demand a re-write so I can get published! Haha. WIsh I'd noticed this thread earlier.
