Trade: Jake Allen acquired for a 3rd-round pick

Recommended Posts

Was thinking we were going to get the third when I first read it. Would of made more sense as were taking on a bad contract. Good backup but feel the cost to be a bit too high.

Could we not have signed a really good backup (Khudobin, Halak, etc) at less than 4.35 million? Would of been free.

It isn't a BAD contract ... amongst goalies with at least 15 games Allen (24 games) was 4th in Sv% and 2nd in GAA ... Blues needed to free up cap space and Binnington is set as their starter ... this isn't a Steve Mason situation ... he was toast ... even after being nought out nobody signed him ... Allen could backup on almost any team in the league and possibly start on a few.

Is this because of the expansion draft? Or is he now our back up?

He is now the backup ... Primeau is the starter in Laval ... Demchenko gets a look see as the possible 21/22 backup option ... Lindgren is either now gone ... OR ... signs an extension for 21/22  (becoming the "expansion draft goalie") and gets loaned somewhere in the AHL or Europe ... if Lindgren is gone, then McNiven either gets a 2-yr deal or gets qualified for this season and again next summer, satisfying the expansion draft rules for goalies (there is no requirement for games played) ... Demchenko

Could they have signed one for cheaper?  Probably.  Could they have signed one for one year though?  Guys like Khudobin, Greiss, etc (Halak re-signed already) are going to be able to command multi-year deals, especially with the Seattle expansion draft looming.  Bergevin's end-of-season presser indicated that he's concerned about spending big beyond the upcoming season with players like Petry, Gallagher, Danault, Tatar, and Armia all pending UFAs that will likely be seeking some sort of raise.  The single year left on Allen's deal may be viewed as a positive here which is something that they wouldn't have been able to get with the top backups in free agency.  This doesn't solve Montreal's exposure requirement for the Kraken but it solves a big need for next year's team.

Don't disagree that he is a good goalie but it was a bad contract from the Blues perspective. They are tight against the cap and need to still need to sign Pietrangelo amongst others. In a flat cap this off-season I can't imagine there were too many teams willing to take on that kind of money for a backup.

Overpayed backup and we have to pay a pick? Maybe we just helped them resign their captain...

After years of Price having to play 65-ish games (when healthy) because the backups sucked ... this is a good pickup IMO ... Price showed in the Tournament what he can do when fresh ... games were every second night (for the most part) but there was no travel and time zone changes ... Allen should be good for 25-27 games, leaving Price at 55-57 ... the least in a full/healthy season since 2009/10.

Undoubtedly ... but it would have been another Keith Kinkaid in all likelihood ... UFA goalies of comparable quality will be looking for starting or 1a/1b gigs.

My mistake on Halak although looking into it he signed for only one year. So it does seem possible to still do. Just seems like there will be lots of goalies available this year. To be fair though Allen is at or near the top of that class. In a likely condensed season the backup goaltender will be very important.

If he performs at this year's level (his stats are significantly better than Binnington's) he might even be able to challenge Price -- for the first time since the Halak days?

And we all know (🙄) that Price is getting moved to Seattle next summer ... so habs will need a starter (co-starter) for 21/22.

Honestly, I'm unconcerned about the supposed "overpay"...the amount of time the Habs have gone without an adequate backup (or #1A) is ridiculous and has been costly to team success. We've finally got a quality solution to the problem. Thank heavens.

I’m unconcerned about actually using our available cap space 👌

Agree ... and if MB finds a way to move Alzner it will be almost a wash ... Karl costs $3.55M against the cap if buried in AHL, but his "replacement" on the roster takes up at least $700K ... so a minimum of $4.25M if he remains in the organization ... Allen has a $4.35M cap hit ... what it would take to move Alzner is a discussion for another thread.

So we traded a 3rd and a 5th for a goalie that’s a decent starting goalie, that should reasonably be a real solid backup goalie that’s capable of lessening Price’s workload without much worry?  We have cap room to spare and he has 1 year left on his deal.  The only downside is the cap hit, but if it wasn’t for that, he would of costed a 2nd plus.

Goaltending solved.  That should almost guarantee playoffs next year.  Can you imagine a well rested Price the entire season?

Nothing except death and taxes are guarantee in life. A lot can go wrong. Should it help our chance at the playoffs yes, but not guarantee it.

But with this trade we just did we cock block and crushed the hopes of teams thinking they can try and trade for PIETRANGELO. As we helped the blues clear cap space so they can resign him.

In 2021-22 we will have a lot of cap space as we have a lot of guys that have 2 years left on their contracts.

I wonder how Price feels about this? He might welcome it in the abstract, but on a bubble team nearly every game becomes important...how will he take to suddenly being asked to sit for X number of "key" games? It's going to be an adjustment for him, I suspect.

Over the last three seasons:

  • Price: .910/2.77
  • Allen: .909/2.67

  • Niemi: .909/3.10
  • Lindgren: .902/3.19
  • Kinkaid: .875/4.24
  • Montoya: .863/3.77

Nothing is guaranteed, but Allen should enable us to win some more games, and allow Price to get the rest he needs.
