Yep. That was the big issue with the Bergevin regime and what he left in nhl roster players.

under MB, Mailloux would have been rushed in as well. There was zero player development under the old regime - almost messed up Caufield in his rookie year.

he was given more ice time that I though he deserved. I used to call him “third pair Harris” when Habs fans would project him to be a second-pair D.

He was also overly present on the Habs social media, maybe that made some think he was a valued part of the future.

He will have a decent NHL career, no doubt but not to the level of hype he got in MTL

He got hype? Seems like a good kid, but I don't think anyone projected him as a top 4. Most of the mentions on this site were around him being the odd man out most of the time.

MB was the only one willing to draft him, so there is that

Correct.  It's well-known that several teams planned to take him in the second round.

Well, he had the stomach to do it and paid for it. Even Timmins didn’t want to touch Mailloux.

now that episode in the Habs saga is done; but let’s give MB credit where credit is due, he believed in Mailloux

He didn't pay for it.

He had the draft in June.

He was fired in December with the Habs in last place.   He was fired cause his team fell apart.

Just an ounce.... an ounce of research.

Logan Mailloux on Trade to St-Louis, Praise For Canadiens, Embracing Local Culture

... that he had nothing but praise for was 20-year-old David Reinbacher.

“His game is great; especially for the amount of hockey he’s missed in the last couple of years,” said Mailloux, referencing his former teammate’s growth. “I think, when he got in, with both sides of the puck, he’s so good. He’s so good defensively, not too many guys can squeeze by him on the wall or get by him at all. He got more and more comfortable and he was a key player for us. He’s going to be a heck of a player.”

A long career and a career save % of .915. He has quietly been a very fine goalie and actually outlasted the great Carey Price. Not too shabby for a 9th round pick. Also, 2010’s “Halak it like that” was one of my favourite hockey puns of all time.

Nice comments from Mailloux. He has shown class on his departure from Montreal. I wish him well.

Mailloux also had great things to say about Florian Xhekaj, including that he should be playing in the NHL already.

Hopefully a good sign

After seeing that vast majority just dont pan out as hoped, that would be logical or rational.

After very careful consideration and analysis I have come to the conclusion that I like our current top 10 prospects better than the 2017 group. Some might disagree.

there are zero prospects on that list that anyone should have been excited about in 2017. When Mete and Poehling are the only ones that you hope become a 2nd liner or middle pairing, i don't know why anyone would have been excited about that prospect pool. Scherbak was a hail mary that you hoped could turn into something. That was around the time i was pushing for a rebuild. Drafting and development were garbage. Under the MB regime until we lucked out with Caufield sliding, and then getting Guhle, drafting was crap. I'm only thankful that MB was gone before their development could have been ruined - Caufield was damn close to being ruined until MB and Duscharme were fired!

The only time i was excited about our prospect pool was when we had MaxPac, Subban, Gallagar coming up. If we had kept McDonough that could have been a great core - albeit, one without a legit #1 centre.

Our current crop of young players/prospects are legit - Hutson, Guhle, Demidov, Slafkovsky, Reinbacher, Hage, along with Caufield and Suzuki and the addition of Dobson is a much more legit mix of young players and prospects to get excited about.. Again, they may not all reach their ceiling, but the probably will be well above their floor. Hell, even our B/C prospects like the Xhejac brothers, Engstrom, Struble, Fowler (some may consider him an A/A-, but goalies are hard to project), Farrell, are all better than that 2017 crop. Their second round pick from this years seems more like a hail mary or boom-bust type of prospect like we had back in 2017, but Hutson, Demidov, Guhle, Slafkovsky, and Hage are one's I think there is a legit reason to be excited about. I do worry of Reinbacher's constant injuries - like Dach's is a cause fror concern, but he is a still a more legit prospect than anyone drafted and developed under MB.

But even that was no comparison to our current prospect pool. Not all of them may reach their ceiling - or even their floor, but with

I think all Habs fans believe that we have significantly better prospects today.

We all hope they reach their potential but prospects are prospects

Slaf, who could still go either way IMHO, and Hutson, who is already a borderline superstar, are established regulars.

Based on this, the only true ‘prospect’ we should be really excited about is Demidov: https://www.habseyesontheprize.com/montreal-canadiens-2025-prospect-pyramid-ivan-demidov-jacob-fowler-michael-hage-david-reinbacher-alexander-zharovsky/

Reinbacher, Fowler, Hage, and Zharovsky seem to be the others worth bothering with. None sound like game-changers. I’ll put DR ahead of those purely on the grounds that he was a top-5 pick. (He’d better turn into a minutes-munching top-3 D-man at worst or we blew the pick, IMHO).

NOTHING about prospects should be taken for granted. Go back two seasons, many people were saying - not unreasonably - that Dach would surpass Suzuki in terms of eating hard minutes at C, etc. Now most of us think the Habs will get very lucky if he can become a legit top-6 C. Just goes to illustrate my longstanding conviction that even blue-chip youngsters should be seen as uncertain commodities.

But has the new regime done a better job than the old in drafting and development? Uh, yeah. It’s like the difference between a beat-up 2005 Hyundai and a new BMW.

I hate the new beaver tooth BMW’s!!! My 2017 M3C was beautiful car, but like the post Savard Habs, BMW really has lost its way. BTW, One of the best BMW designers ever, is now at Genesis (Hyundai).

getting back to the Habs now😁. Salad already is better than any of prospect from 2012 to 2107. He’s reached his floor. Let’s see if he can at least stay there and get close to his ceiling!  Dach showed flashes for a few games and than was injured twice and last year he never recovered and that was hurt again. Realistically, I think the best we can hope is that he becomes a top 6 winger, but unless HuGo manages to make another deal, we probably have to give him one last shot at centre.

Newhook is clearly a 3rd liner and looks to be Dvorak type overpay.

LOL, I’m not in BMW income category and never will be, so I’ll take your word for it :) I drive a Mazda.

On Newhook - I take your point, but the fact is that drafting and developing one Alex Newhook is, statistically, a better than average outcome for two 2nd-round picks. For this reason, I don’t regard that trade as a bust by any means.

Big mazda fan here. Under rated reliability over the last decade. Loved my cx5. I kind of want an mx5 for windy island roads and possibly track days. Lol. Newhook made some strides last year. Maybe not top 6 strides, but it really seems he was figuring out how to use use his speed and lower body strength more wisely in the o zone. I agree. Definitely not a bust.

2014-2016 the Habs had one pick in the first half of the first round (Sergachev, who had presumably been traded by the time of that list) and two late ones (Schebak and Juulsen). Too many picks traded away, and unremarkable choices when they did have picks. And the Habs' best pick of 2013 (Lehkonen) was already a regular by this time.

Juulsen might have been good (no, not Hutson good), and Lindgren and Poehling did finally figure out how to play in the NHL. But, overall,it's a pretty grim list: the first half of Bergevin's tenure featured too much desperate effort to contend and too little team-building.

(The next three years brought the team Kotkaniemi, Ylonen, Romanov, Caufield, Struble, Guhle, Harris--and Suzuki--so one could argue that at least some team-building had started by then,)

Ahhh ... I think back to Claus Luthe, the seminal BMW (and NSU Ro 80) designer. The father of the late 1980s BMWs, from the E28 to E36, some of the best-looking BMWs ever. Although the original 2002 is still a favourite after all these years.
