On Newhook - I take your point, but the fact is that drafting and developing one Alex Newhook is, statistically, a better than average outcome for two 2nd-round picks. For this reason, I don’t regard that trade as a bust by any means.

Yes ... but 31st and 37th, so definitely not top picks. So far no one in that range has played more than a single NHL game. Of course that may change yet ...

I kind of miss the North Stars and the Whalers, even though I hated the latter during the 1980s. Both of those franchises seem to be heavily associated in my mind with the NHL of my childhood. North Stars was a great name, along with some flashy players, while the Whalers had both a great name and of course an all-time great logo. 

 

Hartford in particular was almost a prototypical example of the kind of city that made sense when the NHL was a smaller, less blockbuster thing: a small-ish working class city, from a time when pro hockey was readily accessible to the lunchbucket crowd.

I remember epic playoff battles against the Hartford Whalers. 
 

NHL is most certainly a different beast today and it will continue to grow as it chases bigger and bigger money.

The Whalers were infuriating. A bit like Ottawa today, it didn't matter how much worse than us they were, they always made a big deal out of playing us and therefore really gave everything they had against the Habs (who often had bigger fish to fry and so weren't particularly motivated against the Whalers). Very irritating.

 

Yeah, back then NHL players were basically upper middle class. If you were from a middle class family, you might know people who moved in the same income bracket, or be there yourself. Nowadays they move in a whole other stratosphere - especially the stars, who are basically super-rich.

It was a fantastic trade. Also one of those teams that worked out for both sides. VGK got a high-impact top-line winger while in their contention window. We got a long-term franchise centrepiece.

 

I've always said MB was pretty good at the trade table, except for the Drouin abortion. Where he sucked rocks was primarily at drafting and development, although he also seemed to staff key positions with buddies and leave an organization that was well below standards in terms of best practices on things like advanced stats, etc. But the Suzuki trade? *Chef's kiss*

But this year was a FRESH START ... a chance to prove he was an NHL goaltender out from under the young goaltender battle royal with Montreal ... instead the Hurricanes decided to pass and claimed off waivers a 27 yr-old career AHL goalie (not a single NHL game) whose stats were worse than Primeau's last season in the AHL ... think this may be a bit more of a wake-up call ... like setting your clock radio on snooze but at twice the volume.

I think it just is what it is.  He's a great AHL goalie, who is not good enough for the NHL.  We've (as a board) debated this for months and months at the end of last season, but my evaluation of him hasn't changed and is being proven 100% correct.

To be fair, his fresh start was joining an organization that told him straight up he'd be competing for the #3 job with the Hurricanes tending to carry three netminders in recent years.  So really, not much has changed other than he has now been beaten out for that #3 job.

 

That said, I do expect at least one goalie claim today (Toronto) out of the big batch on waivers so maybe someone else gives him a chance.
