What do we do with Jonathan Drouin?🤔

What is the issue he is dealing with?

No one knows for sure, but it seems to be something mental health related and I think the Montreal market and the pressure here doesn't help.

Drouin plus our first round pick in 2021.

I'd do that in a second.

And I wouldn't even ask for retained salary.

For a broken down Tarasenko?  I wouldn't part with a top pick or comparable asset to get him.  The shoulder problem isn't going away.  Swapping Drouin for him, sure; the Habs will get more out of Tarasenko before he's injured again than they would out of Drouin who I highly doubt will play for Montreal again.  But I wouldn't go much higher than that.  (And St. Louis wouldn't accept a 1-1; I'm just saying Tarasenko's value is quite low given his contract and injury history.)

I hope he comes back and has a great career whether with the Habs or someone else. I’d hate to see his career over

Our hopes align ... but my expectations are that he moves on somehow.

Try to sell the Kraken on that they could be the new Vegas and that Drouin could be a big part of that.

Maybe no pick needed or only a low one.

It perhaps depends on what's wrong. If it's an addiction issue, the Kraken probably stay away. If it's anxiety/stress, they might be open to taking him on the assumption that he brings considerable talent and may flourish in the lower-pressure expansion environment; or perhaps, if he is being medicated, they may be confident that with the right treatment he can be effective. This does seem like the sort of "reclamation project" that has traditionally attracted expansion teams, but with the new rules that turn expansion clubs into instant contenders, they can perhaps afford to be choosier.

I guess I assume that after surgery the shoulder injury could be healed and its not going to pop out again.  If my team doctors say its going to be a chronic issue and continue to pop out then I probably just stay away and look for another move for Drouin.  If he's always on IR, its not gonna be worth it.

If the doctors clear it, i don't have an issue with a first in 2021 (the 30th overall pick in a poor draft).

Thanks for the info, I hadn’t known that! But is it definitively stated in the rule that mental illness is not an injury? Could he be placed on LTIR, for example? If so, then why not a buyout? It might be interesting legal question, whether whatever ails him can be considered an “injury.” For example, if he is suffering from anxiety attacks brought on by stress, in many workplaces that would qualify him for sick leave. Maybe it can be considered a workplace  “injury.”

There is no question of whether the NHL precludes mental health issues or whether he can be placed on LTIR - he already is. That is why dlbalr is saying that he cannot be bought out right now - he has been on LTIR since he left the team.

My understanding is that the only reason the issue kept popping up was that the first two surgeries by the team doctors did not address the root cause of the problem, which was addressed by the 3rd surgery from a specialist.

Considering our draft position, I wouldn't mind letting the pick go to improve the roster.  I'm concerned about the cap crunch, though - it looks like we'll lose at least Armia if not Danault.

Tarasenko, if healthy, is better than any forward on our roster right now.  He's a real gamebreaker.

Yes it means Armia and Tatar are gone.... Perry possibly too....  you can probably still re-sign Danault, but I'm willing to let those guys go to have a winger like that and bring up Poehling, Ylonen, or get other vets at NHL minimum to fill out the roster.

There’s no question about that. I guess the question is, is he actually healthy? I like that we’d only be on the hook for two years, but still.

What would we have to add to the deal for the Blues to both receive the worse player and retain salary?

Tarasenko is damaged goods who has asked for a trade. St. Louis is not going to get anywhere near healthy Tarasenko value. That’s the point of my proposal

Drouin is damaged goods too, and a much less proven player.

That would be for the Team Doctors to determine.  I'd certainly be asking for his medical records as well as a full physical before making any trade.

As I said earlier, if my doctors say he's damaged goods then his contract means i don't want him.

That's the public commentary and I'm sure that's the plan but when you go under the knife that many times for the same injury, the third one isn't going to magically fix everything.  When his best attribute is his shot, that many surgeries is a giant red flag, regardless of what specialist did the last one.  It's not like he played well after coming back from the last one either; he struggled considerably.

The only reason I suggested Drouin in trade because of the risk/ reward. Getting Tarasenko is a risk but Drouin’s value has to be at an all time low as well.

Bergevin announced during his presser that Drouin is expected back next season. That is great news that he has dealt with whatever was keeping him out. Maybe some might not like it from a hockey perspective but from a well-being point of view you have to feel good for him. Myself personally I'm excited to have him back and can see him having a great season next year. Maybe 55-65 points. He showed pretty good chemistry with Suzuki last year.

We should trade him IMO. We lost the original trade, take what you can get and move on

Drouin has never been a distraction with the Habs, like (for example) Domi became

I am happy to read the good news

The whole situation could become a distraction for sure - especially if he struggles.

I also consider the nonsense he did in Tampa where he took his ball and went home because they weren’t playing him as much as he liked. Presenting himself as such a star how dare they not see it.
