What is Phil Danault worth?

I would honestly be surprised if he gets an offer over $4m-$4.5m.  Nugent-Hopkins is signed for $5.125m and I wouldn’t take Danault for Nugent-Hopkins without getting something else with Danault.

He will get good offers you figure, from other teams

Yes, teams out there need centres and he's an excellent 5v5 player.

Vegas clearing space today tells me that they are in on him.

That was the rumoured offer on the table earlier this season that Danault turned down.

I know ... I thought context would be clear I meant now.

That seems vey high for a 3d line centre with low offensive numbers but very good defensively. That may come back to bite them with their salary cap at some point.

The answer is he is worth $5.5 million for 6 years.

At least to LA, he's worth that.

I'm personally happy with the way things worked out. In any case, I'm reading that Danault already made his decision to leave the Habs in October, after receiving the Habs' offer. Maybe he was insulted by the 6x$5M?

The answer is LA paid him $5.5M or 6 years ... unless it comes out that he had multiple similar offers I will maintain it is an overpayment ... with Turcotte and Byfield onboard the Kings are buying protection for their development ... but twill be grossly overpaying heir 3C by the time they are a playoff team with the two youngsters as their most talented centres

While this doesn't factor in everything, this is a useful resource for that type of calculation:

https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/

In this case, it's $201,300 per year in less taxes paid with the Kings.

But I suspect the cost of living is higher in LA ... so perhaps a "wash".

Housing yes. Most consumer goods are cheaper in LA. But think of all they money you’d save by buying swim trunks instead of Canada goose parkas.

Not certain that overall the COL is lower in LA ... You would need around 7,859.34C$ (6,244.21$) in Los Angeles, CA to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 5,300.00C$ in Montreal (assuming you rent in both cities).

Every trip we’ve made to the USA, I found prices have been cheaper than Canada.  California and NYC have ridiculous housing costs, but I found overall prices for food clothing to be lower. Cars and consumer electronics are a lot less in the USA.

But housing is a big part of COL ... just saying the tax savings are not absolute, may be largely offset by overall COL ... HOWEVER, the weather in LA kicks Montreal's butt ... on the flip side, the relative geological stability of Montreal is certainly a big plus.

I know Evans is young, but I think he is going to take Danault’s spot THIS year.

Danault benefited from Pleks example, Evans has had Danault’s. Evans is smart smart smart. There will be growing pains, but we’ve said goodbye to a defensive specialist, added an up and coming in Evans and used the money saved on offense in the form of Hoffman. Losing some of an area of strength (forward defensive responsibility) in order to strengthen an area of weakness (forward scoring).

Well - a really strong organization will allow overpaid vets to walk and replace them from within with properly-developed young talent. Whether that’s what happens here remains to be seen, but it’s worth the gamble.

Evans is not going to play top line minutes and generate 50 points this season ?!

But Evans can replace Kotkaniemi on the third line and be an effective shutdown center

The team's salary structure is still ok, but hockey success goes through a great season from Suzuki and Kotkaniemi

No question, Suzuki and KK are going to be huge components of any success the Habs have next year.

Moreso for Suzuki, just hope for progression with Kotkaniemi, fingers crossed he comes in stronger, more confident and more consistent.
