Doing the math

According to CapGeek, with the Armia signing the Habs has roughly $10.6 million in Cap Space.

Both KK and Lehkonen are RFAs.  That is probably $6 million right there.

All that is left - is roughly $4.6 million -and we would only have 11 forwards and 6 d signed.

one of those D is Weber, so we should gain an extra $7.8 million - but most of that should go to a Weber replacement?

The math says we DON'T have much room to add players - even if we let Danault go (because then we have to replace him).

After the Savard signing, Habs have $6.2m in cap space remaining.  With Weber’s LTIR that is roughly $14m in cap space with Leks and KK to sign, without re-signing Danault.  At this point I would be surprised if they land Hamilton.  It would only leave $4m-$5m in cap space for those 2 signings and no legit 3rd line center.

Let Danault go and sign a cheaper replacement

Sign Dougie Hamilton with the savings + Weber’s $$

Dougie is gone to Jersey.

Habs UFAs not yet signed (I think):

  • Michael Frolik
  • Erik Gustafsson
  • Charlie Lindgren
  • Jon Merrill
  • Corey Perry
  • Eric Staal
  • Tomas Tatar

Same. I would have expected to see that confirmed already ...

Me too. We need him and his leadership even more now that Weber is gone.

Without a doubt - we are a worse team RIGHT now than we were this morning (with or without Weber)

Gone (right now):

Danault (to LA, so no going back)

Perry

Not to mention:

Tatar

Gustaffsson

Merrill

Staal

Frolik

Added:

Savard

Paquette

Wideman

Cap Room - $5.4 million

Unsigned:

KK - $3.5 (estimate)

Lehkonen - $2.8 (estimate)

Cap room = $-900,000 (That is a negative)

Most likely - Weber is gone, which gives us $6.9 million to play with.

Guaranteed:

Savard does not replace Weber (even an injured Weber)  (He is at least as good as Gustaffson or Merrill though, maybe a little better.)

Paquette doesn't replace Danault.

Wideman replaces Ouellet????

So - who/what can we get for $6.9 million - knowing we won't have Weber?

A forward to replace Danault?

A number one D?

From Arpon Basu at the Athletic:

Quote

Marc Bergevin says in an ideal world they would add a puck-moving defenceman, but decided there was nothing out there in free agency they felt comfortable with. Will continue looking on the trade market.

So, I take it that they felt that the cost for Hamilton -- or else Hamilton was not interested in coming to Montreal.

Bergevin says they have made an offer to Perry but he has not responded yet.

Do you have a source for Perry having signed elsewhere?

No source.  But he is a UFA, which means he is gone.  Doesn't mean Montreal can't re-sign him.

All UFAs at this point are gone.  Tatar could come back to Montreal too??  Doubt it, but...

Further to Perry, we are already a projected $900,000 over the cap with the estimated cost of RFA signings for KK and Lehkonen.

That will come out of the money we save from Weber.

So $7.85 becomes $6.95

Take $1 million away for Perry and we are down to $5.95 to replace Weber and Danault...

And I bet Perry gets $1.5...

THIS is where having Armia and Byron for $3.4M each in the bottom four forwards is a cap challenge

Ryan Murray????

I don't see anyone else left that is remotely worthwhile or possible....

He's a lefty and they have more than ample depth on that side.

Perhaps not really the ideal puck-mover MB said he could be looking for ...Murray had a one season blip to 0.52 pt/game back in 18/19 but otherwise more like a 0.30 pt/gm defencemen ... although on the Habs that would have out him third amongst D who played at least 10 games last season

I believe Edmundson could be switched to the right-side if it meant an overall improvement
