It wasnt Tampa they were playing, so not sure how much would read into the win. But shouldnt complain and actually scored a few, which was awesome for the forwards.

Just 3 shots from the defensemen, not so great and gave up another PP goal.

D was much better

Niku has two passes and looked good on the pp

And didn’t Chiarot have a good offensive game?

MA Godin from The Atheltic has an article on the Habs players signed for 3 years or more, talking how this group will be together for a long time.

Reordering the lineup by contract length (3yr + in bold) shows the holes in the lineup for sure:

Hoffman(3yr)     Suzuki(8yrs)     Gallagher(6yrs)

Toffoli(3yr)         Dvorak(4yr)      Anderson(6yr)

Drouin(2yr*)                                  Caufield(2yr*)

                          Evans(3yr)         Armia(4yr)

and the rest of the Fs:

Byron(2yr)  Lehkonen(1yr)    Brooks(1yr)   Perreault(1yr)   Paquette(1yr)

Edmundson(3yr)      Petry(4yr)

Romanot(1yr*)          Savard(4yr)

and the rest of the Ds:

Niku(1yr)   Chiarot(1yr)   Kulak(1yr)   Wideman(1yr)   Weber(5yr)

now that Edmundson is back in Montreal:

I am interested in seeing which of Niku or Wideman is sent to Laval or if Kulak is traded. One will have to go, and I do not think it will be Romanov who is waiver excempt

The road trip will certainly provide an answer

Interesting. We’re gonna regret the Gally contract before it’s over. Same is likely true of Petry - God love both guys - and quite possibly Savard, based on what I’ve been hearing. Looking at C, Suzuki and Dvorak seem like a reassuring duo providing stability at a key position.

The real problem is whether we have quality talent in the pipeline to fill those other gaps. I am deeply skeptical. 2-3 years ago we heard (often from people on this board) all about the amazing young talent the Habs would be having come on-stream right about now. We have CC, granted. I see little indication of anybody else worth two figs, frankly.

I totally agree with Norlinder.  Out of all of them that are not on the Habs, with the way they are currently playing I believe Norlinder would be the most help.  ex:  the Habs have had so many mad dashes around the other teams crease, but havent really scored on any of those chances.  This problem has existed for several years, where they are basically in the crease and are trying to *jam* the puck into the net.  The problem with that is there are too many bodies in the way and the majority of the bottom of the net is covered.  i.e. in those situations, they really need to pass the puck back to somebody that is in a position to shoot for the top corners.  Well, Norlinder has the offensive smarts to sneak down to in between the hashmarks and he has a shot that can get the puck in the net.

I gather that Norlinder and Guhle may be pretty good. But when you read that Romanov is #3 on the list, it tends to make one a bit pessimistic about the overall pool.

Well, on somebody's list but not necessarily on "the" list.

A lost faceoff (Evans) and a set play, much like what Las Vegas was punishing us with in the semifinals.

Note that Wheeler's rankings are from February.

yes, but telling how he values Mysak and Farell over Poehling before Poehling started playing well in Laval. Also, amazing how low Ylonen ranks!

those four players are the future of this franchise at the forward position... quite underwhelming

which prospects should be kept to graduate with the Habs and which should be traded to fill a need?

The thing with prospects is that some will make it and some will bust.  You don't want to be the Leafs where you say we have two goalie prospects so lets trade one to fill a need.  That leaves you with Justin Pogge and you traded away Tuukka Rask.

But it puts a team like the Habs in a difficult position where MB did not plan for a blow up and rebuild after being a semi finalist for the cup

but yet, that may be the best course of action this season for years beyond the Price-Petry window

so, who stays? Who should be dealt? In order to upgrade the lineup

Speaking of those, for anyone wondering, they will be delayed again this year.  At this point, I'm leaning towards running that series during the All Star/Olympic break when we basically will have three-plus weeks with nothing going on.

Ideally any trade you are making is for someone young enough to help the team not just this year but for multiple season.

You don't let an unexpected run to the cup final change the fact that this is a bubble team right now, so you aren't trading for a quick fix.

Once you have identified a player who can be part of the long term future of the team, then we can see what would work in a trade with that team, as every team's needs will be different and the value of a Dylan Strome and a Vitali Kravtsov (two names on the market, not saying we should get either) is very different as well.

You also have the option of potentially trading our UFAs (ie Chiarot), other players on the roster (Lehkonen) or future draft picks.  It doesn't have to just be prospects.

lines during practice today, I thought Niku was more comfortable on the right side and Kulak on the left, but multiple posts had them the other way around. I wonder if Kulak and Wideman may be replacing each other during the trip:
