But I’ve also long been pessimistic about how the Habs will look post-Weber/Price. If this year turns out to be a disaster and we then ship out a couple of core pieces at the deadline for a handsome return that really beefed up the prospect pool, I would not object to that. That’s what I meant when I said no mushy middle. I want decisive action from Bergevin to beef up or tank before the deadline.

Exactly ... finish bottom 10 or at very least get a couple of playoff games out of it ... but giving up the 11th-16th pick to Arizona and (worst case scenario) drafting 32nd from the floor of the Bell Centre would be horrid. It all depends on who thinks (at the trade deadline) that they are just a player upgrade or two away from contending for the Cup, and what their gaps are. Some years there are more teams, other years there will be fewer.

I think most teams showed a lot more restraint- I named the three I think May overpay this year, but I think teams are going to be less willing to give up that much for a guy who is at best an average dman (IMO he was a below average bottom pairing guy. there are a lot more examples of teams who overpaid for guys a lot better than Chiarot in the past, and regretted the move. League is getting younger, and there is less willingness to give up high picks than there used to be.

Edmonton maybe, but only because people are probably going to get fired if they don’t win a round, and WILL get fired if they miss the playoffs - not every GM has as a long of a rope as Bergevin.
