In 2022, so far 20 Police Officers have died in the line of duty in the entire country. 22 Students have died in school shootings. The old "guns don't kill people people kill people" seems to be the prevailing wisdom down there. Just crazy. There is 1 common denominator in all these killings and that is the far too easy availability of weapons for anyone. It allows for a family or household member or a law enforcement officer to petition the court for a temporary extreme risk protection order (ERPO) beginning on January 1, 2020. The petitioner must establish by a preponderance of the evidence that a person poses a significant risk to self or others by having a firearm in his or her custody or control or by possessing, purchasing, or receiving a firearm. (reference: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb19-1177) The sheriff in my neighboring county (as well as other counties in the state) have explicitly stated they will not comply, as guns in the hands of people is more important. Handguns and assault rifles should be severely restricted to military/law enforcement, seems such a no-brainer. Our firearm suicide rate is eight times higher.
