62nd Overall, Lane Hutson

TSN690 guys saying that Hutson's "bone age" is lower than his chronological age ... supposedly meaning he potentially has more growth potential than most his age ... sounds like a good guy for NCAA development (apparently going to Boston College) ... his older brother (20yr-old) Quinn is 5'11", so there is genetic hope

Sportsnet guys said at the combine he was going to scouts with papers from doctors saying he will still grow.

We’re gonna love watching him as a prospect either way. He’ll shine at lower levels, and we pray he can translate his game.

if been wanting a dynamic d prospect like this in the system for ages

From The Athletic:

But Hutson’s size remains a serious hurdle, one he is trying to knock down. Hutson spoke to 16 teams at the NHL Scouting Combine — including the Canadiens — and he brought each of those teams a report from an endocrinologist measuring his bone age and suggesting he has roughly 18 months of growth left in him.

If he doesn't grow a bit or add an ounce, that small frame more than likely (but not totally) dooms his NHL career ... but clearly Habs believe the previously referenced doctor's report and are confident he will sprout and fill out ... the key element of the article for me is:

The NCAA's schedule allows for smaller players to take more time to develop and grow physically, which will do wonders for Hutson's development. Expect him to add some muscle to his frame ...

NCAA is perfect for players who need to develop physically and/or in terms of skills ... I have always wondered how things would have worked out for Louis LeBlanc if he had stayed at Harvard for a couple of more seasons ... It will be interesting to see where Hutson (wonder how often he gets called Hudson) is physically this time next year ... although he likely is at least two years away from considering leaving school for the Habs.

Love this one. I love puck-moving D and, while of course you do need size on your roster, like a lady with a modestly-endowed hubby I have never bought into the size fetish. A team needs some size, but that does not mean that an individual small player cannot thrive in the NHL.

You go, Hutson!

Pronman was high on Hutson for day 2;

"With 193 picks left to be announced on Saturday in the NHL Draft, there is still a lot of talent to be found.

Here are the 20 best skaters and 3 best goalies still available on my draft board.

Top 20 Remaining Skaters

1. Lane Hutson, LHD, USA U-18 (NTDP)

February 14, 2004 | 5′ 8″ | 158 pounds

Tier: Middle of the lineup player

Skating: NHL average
Puck skills: NHL average
Hockey sense: High-end
Compete: NHL average

Player comparable: Torey Krug

Background: Hutson was a top four defenseman for the U.S. NTDP all season and generated a lot of offense. He was invited to the U18 team as an underage player where he was a top player for that team as well, being named one of the top three players at the U18 World Championships in 2021 for USA. He was named top defenseman of the 2022 U18 Worlds. He’s committed to Boston University.

Analysis: Hutson is a constant threat with the puck on his stick. He’s the smartest player in the draft. He makes so many seam passes to generate chances. Hutson is also a highly-skilled puckhandler who shows great creativity off the offensive blue line. He makes a lot of crafty fakes and dekes to evade pressure. He’s not the fastest skater, but his edgework is quite good and allows him to use his skating to attack. The offense is clear NHL quality. Whether a barely 5-foot-9 defenseman who isn’t an elite skater can defend in the NHL is the question with Hutson. He’s a competitive, quality defender versus juniors and college opponents but that will need to be a test he’ll need to clear down the line. I think he plays in the NHL, and projects as an offensive-tilted top-four defenseman, but I realize the odds are against a player who looks like him becoming that. I stamp him this high because he’s the smartest player in the draft and I see just enough to the rest of his game to be able to elevate at higher levels."

Aaron Ward on TSN690 mentioned this afternoon that a number of NHL scouts told him that they think Hutson ***MAY*** be the steal of the draft.

Watching some highlights from rookie camp, and it looks like Hutson will join Caufield as a 3-on-3 OT MVP candidate.

He’s going to be an actual star, calling it now.

I know bit in jest; but, why do we do this with so many prospects?

Is not likely he will be a star let alone top 4, is crazy high expectation for a very small d-man.

If all the stars align he may be a solid top 4 d-man, but an All-Star selection seems just a fan dream.

Hope you are right, but he has couple years to show how he stacks up vs NCAA/AHL forwards first. Dont think anyone needs to worry about his offense ...a Markov replacement on the PP would be sweet though.

Yeah as good as he looks let’s see how he stacks up against bigger, faster forwards in the AHL.

He may be a superstar Dman but he may also be a PP specialist with Ozone starts.

I agree we have to watch out getting too high on prospects, but I am actually particularly high on Hutson. I just think he has “it”.

when I watch him it reminds me of how I felt seeing Subban and the world juniors.
