I thought he had the tools to develop into a good NHL defensemen but they don't all develop the way you hope for. Injuries really hampered his development. I recall a few posters on here pencilling him in as a sure-fire future top-4 d-man. This unhappy denouement illustrates why caution is wise when it comes to our expectations around prospects. I wouldn’t want to pencil him in as a top pairing, or even a top 4 quite yet.

But it may not be this year is what I’m saying. You can’t pencil a CHL player to be a top 4 in the NHL in their first season. It will depend on on how quickly they are ready to play that role in the NHL. Some guys need a couple of years, others like Makar and Fox make an impact right away. Hell, Hedman took a few years to become a great dman, while Myers won rookie of the year and declined every year since. I prefer our young players to improve and get more dominant, and not just do well and exceed expectations in their first year.

dlbalr
One you can cross off on the AHL list, Cedric Desruisseaux signed with Wheeling of the ECHL.
Commandant
Vrbetic and Phillipe Desrosiers signed two way deals (ahl/echl) That sounds like the goaltending battle to backup primeau and start in trois rivieres
dlbalr
Montembeault didn't file for arbitration today which is a bit of a surprise. That would suggest that a contract is close. He could be in the mix for Laval as well depending on what happens with Price.

alfredoh2009
going through those re-signed and the additions to AHL and ECHL, it is clear Hugh-Gort has: * increased the average size of the farm teams, * added depth RDs to help development of the multiple LD prospects * IMHO, identified the veteran core in Laval It is starting to take shape, not bad, not bad... still don't know if it is better, but it seems to be

tomh009
Dach and Primeau not eligible for arbitration but have not signed qualifying offers. Are they holding out for more, or hoping for an offer sheet from another team?

Are they holding out for more, or hoping for an offer sheet from another team? Since Dach is undoubtedly pencilled for the NHL roster next season, HuGo may be waiting to clear some cap space ... while the Habs can go over the ceiling during the summer, they may prefer not to do so until necessary. Primeau may be using the Montembeault contract (one-way, $1M, 2 yrs) as his standard ... Habs undoubtedly want to keep Primeau's contract buriable ($1.125M is the 22/23 limit, $1.15M for 23/24 through 25/26). IMO neither Dach nor Primeau are likely to receive offer sheets ... in Dach's case if a team tried to KK them (i.e., make a ridiculous one year offer with an understanding for a longer-term extension "signed, sealed and delivered" in the player/agent's pocket) the Habs would have no choice but to match unless (***perhaps***) if it was for $6,302,231 or more ... that would be 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks as compensation, or slightly more than they gave Chicago for Dach. Are they holding out for more, or hoping for an offer sheet from another team? Primeau's is easy to work on - the first year will be two-way and any subsequent year will be one-way. At this point, the question is whether or not the AAV will be the league minimum or a bit more. Montreal would probably like three years (similar to what Columbus did with Tarasov or the Habs in the past with Lindgren) while Primeau's camp probably wants the two. There's no rush on either side to get it done. With no arbitration rights, Dach can only sit and wait. Hughes probably needs to see what money can or can't be freed up to know what type of offer can be made. A one-year deal is probably around $2 million while a three-year bridge deal is closer to $3M. Until they know what they can afford, that one will linger; I wouldn't be shocked if it lasted into early September.
