A tool for all 32 GMs to use, so fair enough isnt it? Some GMs will always be less scrupulous than others.:spamafote:

Not all teams have the budget to put 10 million or whatever on LTIR.

Conceptually I support LTIR ... teams should have the chance to replace a player lost for the season ... but it has become a cap circumvention tool to sign older players to contracts that are never intended or expected to be fulfilled solely to reduce the AAV.

Eliminating--or at least reducing--the LTIR (cap exemption) once the player turns 35 would be one way to discourage those contracts.

Too many teams spending too much money for contracts that are too long. I'm happy to see the Habs waiting until it becomes more of a buyer's market.

That always happens on UFA day one. Hughes is very smart. He will save their cap room until the right time which isn't today.

It  is considerably more extreme this year.  Maybe due to the cap finally rising significantly.

D'oh!! All the players I was hoping the Habs might have a slight chance at signing have all signed.

It seems like numerous teams haven't learned any lessons from other teams giving out albatross contracts.

Of all the players the Habs might have had a chance on Patrick Kane and Perry are the only ones that aren't overpaid or for way too long.

Monahan got 5x $5.5M, glad we did not sign up for that.

Drouin another single-year contract, but at $2.5M this time. If he can produce 50+ points again that's pretty good value.

Wasn't the least bit interested in signing Perry. I think he is pretty much done, a little surprised the Oilers signed him. He is only interested in playing for a cup contender anyway

I agree that he is getting over the hill a bit - he didnt do much in the playoffs compared to his previous years.  However, he is still a large vet that signs 1 year deals on the cheap with skills that he can teach the young Habs players.  ex:  he could teach Slaf how to be a major pain in the ass.  Same with Dach and even WiFi too he could teach them how to hang out in front of the other teams net and do tap ins or deflections.  That would be worth the $1.4 mil.

Big surprises thus far;

Chychryn. I had other thought about his value. I guess the same goes for Jeannot.

On the other hand, both Tampa and Capitals are in similar situations, so it makes some sense I guess. But Guentzel over Stamkos and parting with Sergachev?

I have never been a fan of Alexander Holtz, and it looks like New Jersey have come to the same conclusion as I. But I find it surprising, as many holds him higher.

And finally, with the pick of Demidov, I like that Montreal is staying quiet. Who knows what the likes of the underachievers can do with an established Slafkovsky and a healthy Dach in the linup.

I think the thought process for Geuntzel over Stamkos is age.  28 vs 34.

Yeah, but should that be a concern for Tampa? The risk of loosing morale with the core seems like risk to me.

With Gentzel out of the picture, they may opt to resign him.

They'd love to re-sign him.  It's Necas who doesn't want to re-sign, or at least sign there long-term.

Perhaps but 8mil x 4 years is a lot for a 34 year old forward. I think this was a prudent move by Tampa.

Agree about the term, but obviously Tampa had the cap if they really wanted to keep him. And I really thought he wanted to end his career as an “franchise icon”.

He could have ended his career with Tampa but he chose term and money. His decision.

I had heard numerous sources claim his next contract would be for $4.5-6 mil so that contract he just got is crazy.   I was sorta hoping the Habs could get him for $6 or under for 3 yrs.  If that had happened there might have been a chance of getting Hedman the year after.

I was never fully into the idea of giving up our prospects to get a young roster player.  ex:  Beck, Roy, etc + picks to get Necas or Zegras, etc.  I was hoping they could sign a Stanley Cup winning vet instead. ex:  Kane, Stamkos, Perry, etc.   After today, they might be forced to go back to the trade idea or have to just wait it out yet another year.

Tampa's reported last offer was eight years at $3M per, thinking Stamkos' market wouldn't be as strong as it clearly was.  Hedman has an extension in place already with them, it should be announced in the next few days by the sounds of it.
