If a team chooses to pay a 34 year old forward 4 x 8 then that is their decision. Did Gallagher deserve his contract? Probably. Was it a smart use of funds? Probably not. Teams make choices. Players make choices.
Sir_Boagalott
Marchessault says he was close to signing with the Habs but the pressure of Montreal and length of term Hughes was offering was less than what he wanted. He also talked with Stamkos after hearing rumors that he was signing with Nashville and that got him to sign with them.

My point being is that teams have tough decisions to make, Tampa made the decision that they couldn't afford what the open market was willing to give him. They determined that giving the money to Guentzel was a better bet. It's not a great situation if your best players (ie Stamkos and Hedman) age out at the same time. They made the call, time will determine if it's the right one or not.

I heard they also offered him several other deals. 1 was a 1 year deal and then he'd be 35 yrs old and their plan was to start giving him incentive laden contracts after that. I was hoping Hedman would leave next year but it sounds like he will resign soon.

Whispering ideas in Blake’s ear… Unfortunately Bergy still doesn’t use or understand advanced analytics. Great job Bergevin

PLD was a guy he chased for a long time and Edmondson was another of his pickups on a deal two years too long in Montreal as well.

In the end, the Edmundson contract worked out pretty well for the Habs, and would have been better yet if not for the freak practice injury. But than Columbus picked PLD instead of Puljujarvi

Not sure that is same as 'chasing him for a long time.' But, not big deal.
