He could have ended his career with Tampa but he chose term and money. His decision.

And he did get paid. If a team chooses to pay a 34 year old forward 4 x 8 then that is their decision. Did Gallagher deserve his contract? Probably. Was it a smart use of funds? Probably not. Teams make choices. Players make choices.

Marchessault says he was close to signing with the Habs but the pressure of Montreal and length of term Hughes was offering was less than what he wanted.  He also talked with Stamkos after hearing rumors that he was signing with Nashville and that got him to sign with them.

Apparently he was offered 3m x 8 years (who knows if that's true or not). My point being is that teams have tough decisions to make, Tampa made the decision that they couldn't afford what the open market was willing to give him. They determined that giving the money to Guentzel was a better bet. It's not a great situation if your best players (ie Stamkos and Hedman) age out at the same time. They made the call, time will determine if it's the right one or not.

I heard they also offered him several other deals.  1 was a 1 year deal and then he'd be 35 yrs old and their plan was to start giving him incentive laden contracts after that.

I was hoping Hedman would leave next year but it sounds like he will resign soon.

Is Rob Blake a very bad GM?

I dont get this contract?

NHL free agency best and worst deals: Star wingers in Florida, Boston’s big bets - The Athletic (nytimes.com)

Joel Edmundson, Los Angeles Kings
Contract: $3.8M x four years
Surplus value: -$2.9M per year

I agree, that seems like a lot of money and term for a guy into his 30's with a bad back.

I smell Bergevin in this deal. Whispering ideas in Blake’s ear…

Unfortunately Bergy still doesn’t use or understand advanced analytics.

Great job Bergevin

I swear this and the PLD must be bergevin's influence. I don't remember too ma y of these bonehead moves from Blake until MN got there.

100% agree! PLD was a guy he chased for a long time and Edmondson was another of his pickups on a deal two years too long in Montreal as well.

In the end, the Edmundson contract worked out pretty well for the Habs, and would have been better yet if not for the freak practice injury.

Really, never heard that.

When they were looking at moving Subban to EDM, it was to get their pick to take PLD. But than Columbus picked PLD instead of Puljujarvi

This was widely reported and discussed at the time, not easy to find links from a deal that happened 8 years ago, but there is one:

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/pk-subban-canucks-canadiens-trade-2016

there were a lot more rumours and reports out of EDM at the time as well of Montreal wanting their 4th pick, but the deal was killed after PLD was taken by Columbus

Bergy tried to make a deal at the draft for him, pretty standard stuff.

Not sure that is same as 'chasing him for a long time.'

But, not big deal.
